"Look at all the millions of people that die each year from car crashes. Systems like these could save those lives. That's a good enough reason for me."
With the invention of airbags, people didnt wear seatbelts because the system was designed to save lives reguardless. People were injured/killed in greater numbers. Ironic how a system designed to save lives resulted in more injuries/deaths. Generation 2 air bags packed less punch because they were designed to work with seatbelts.
ABS breaks do a good job of slowing a vehicle. Unfortunatly, the system doesnt work if the vehicle "thinks" it's stopped.
Safety improvements dont work if they are expected to compensate for incompetance. Never underestimate the stupidity of motorists in large numbers.
If your falling a sleep on the highway, perhaps you should have made an effort to get a good 8-9 hours sleep the night before.
Our vehicles don't need to become more complex - automakers need to focus first on making vehicles that dont fall apart while your driving them. Just go to the library and take a look at all the vehicle problems in the Lemon-Aid guides. If automakers can't make vehicles with reliable tie-rods or good quality alternators - then why would i want to ask them to add problems?
Ok, in today's world, i'll support alot of convienient things, like dishwashers and indoor plumbing, but i will never purchase a car that can drive itself. This takes the fun out of it, and i dont trust a computer to replace a human. Also, a knowledge gap would form. If you went from a vehicle with backup sensors to a vehicle without, would you be able to do the job? how about a new driver in 10 years time when all cars have sensors? would he/she be able to step into an older vehicle and be able to drive it?
And vehicle ad-hoc networks are a good idea, untill you go to a city like victoria bc in canada. cars last so long here, there would not be enough vehicles with the system to see any benifits.
So i ask why? Why would you want to add things that will require maintenance? why would you want to increase the cost of vehicles? Why?
this topic had been covered on slashdot previously. Its a major wonder how news sites ever stay in buisness when the stories are old.
Also, anyone who has seriously looked into electric vehicles (EV's) will note that in spite of the success of well built electric vehicles (GM EV1 and the electric Ford Ranger), the automakers are resistant to the idea of selling electric vehicles. When the contracts for the EV1 were complete, GM scrapped the vehicles. Many EV modles have suffered this fate. A few more recent success stories like the Ford Ranger EV have popped up. After intense ralleying by vehicle owners, Ford gave in and sold off their small fleet of Ranger EV's.
sorry, i'm ranting again. Yes, an electric car isn't for everyone. However, take a look at some electric vehicle conversions and what owners have to say before making up your mind.
I'm a Canadian, and as a Canadian, it is my right to download all the music I want. This is going to start affecting the number of available sources to download music for free. Does anyone know if a napster like project that is born out of canada would be safe from RIAA and the MPAA?
FYI:
I know it's thought that uploading music is illegal here. The uploaders computer makes a copy and then sends that to the downloader. In canadian law, the person sharing the media cannot make the copy. the person reciving the copy must copy the media. My argument is that the person reciving the media is initiating the copying process and effectivly borrowing the uplaoders computer. the uploader does not physicly initiate the copying process
(not that I'm with the mpaa or anything)
If we blamed guns for killing people, we'd have large jails for convicted guns. A murderer would not be punished.
It's not the knive's fault your bleeding all over the floor. It was your own fault for not knowing how to properly use it.
It's not the hammer's fault for bending when its half-sunk and requires removal. It's OI (Operator Incompetance)
When a car spins out of controll on a wet highway, don't blame the rain. Blame the idiot behind the wheel for not knowing how to safely drive his/her vehicle. (speed is ALWAYS a factor)
It's not bittorrents fault it is used to pirate movies. Its just a more effecient way to do it. VHS Tapes were never blamed for pirated movie copies when internet wans't mainstream were they?
Stop blaming the tool used for causing damage and start blaming people. (Just get ready to open jails for the 10's of millions who support pirating)
I'm sick of hearing that napster is the problem, kazaa is the problem, bittorrent is the problem, et cetera! Start hiring people with brains, who can figure out the problem.
Eight years ago, I used an old two-button ps2 ball-mouse. Then my father got a new computer, and there was a new sheriff in town - a logitech trackman. Comfortable, smooth, and THREE BUTTONS!!!! Wow! when I got my own computer in 2001, I bought the next version - a Logitech trackman wheel. It's even availible in a cordless version! What I like best about this mouse is when I'm at a packed lan party, I don't need any space to move my hand!
Under the Canadian Copywrite Law, "personal copying" is permitted. This means I can download all the music I could ever want. The only drawback is a small tax on every cd purchased. thats ok though, i dont buy cd's often.
Purchase a roomba. Remove the roomba's top cover and drill a few holes. Now mount your sentury robot to the cover and put everything back in place. Set everything to automatic and watch your household fall into chaos! To take on the world, increase number of room-turies, and mount small wireles cameras on each unit so you dont even have to leave the living room to enjoy.
I will never understand. If a grocery store so as much hires someone *unlikeable* to work the cash registers, they lose customers. likewise with vehicle manufacturers. If a bad car is designed, it is branded a lemon, and is treated as such by all consumer reporting websites/newsletters.
So why Bill Gates is still in buisness after making such a comment: "Understand those are cases where you are downloading third-party software" it makes my eys roll. Why is the customer always right? because only the customer knows what he or she wants. If the customer wants a good solid car, they are going to buy a good solid car from *insert favorite car manufacturer here*. So why people put up with this slander from the biggest man in Microsoft is beyond me.
Personally, i think i run a very tight ship. I dont need antivirus, and a nice firewall is all that stands between me and the next script-kiddie on the block. Problems i've ever had are related to IE and poor OS performance.
Because i will shortly be entering my era of University in 2005, my thoughs turn to my financial future. I will not be able to afford a new computer, much less new games/new MS OS. When the time comes when i can no longer play games on my current setup, windows will have no further place on my computer.
A "Standard" is supposed to allow all similar devices to act/interact the same. WHen the internet was first beginning, a tonn of companies were making propriatary devices. This was bad because your CISCO router wouldn't work with your HP network switch. Standards were set in place so that ALL devices could work in a network/internet enviroment.
A "Standard" isn't supposed to descriminate based on Operating System. At that point, its not a standard, but a propriatary set of rules used to further monopolise windows.
MICROSOFT EMPLOYEES: Save yourselfs and write letters to Bill that this is a low blow and has damaged his PR. (I thought i had no respect left for microsoft after XP SP2, but i was wrong. This has clearly has disgusted me.)
INTEL EMPLOYEES: Withdraw yourselfs from this bad idea. If MS is the only one who likes this so-called "Standard", then you should have no part of it. If this is not possible, deny support vocally. No one can stop your basic freedom of free speech.
"...it is the only technology now in existence that can one day take us to the stars."
Well, unless the Japanese can automate retraction of the sails, it wont reach any stars.
While it's powered by solar wind, it will slow down and reverse as it gets farther
from the original star and closer to the destination star.
1) are inexpensive; 2) do no interfere with the 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz wifi channles; 3) do no interfere with Bluetooth; 4) are inexpensive; 5) will get better range because of the lower frequency used.
but when i do decide to get one, it will be just that, a phone. i dont want functions up the yang, especially ones that will probably need patching from script-kiddies. hell, i dont even want text messaging! gim'me a phone with nothing but unbelieveable reliability.
was, after all, designed based on the idea that all people are good. when a few people turn up bad apples, people want to punish them. usually this ends up with innocent people getting hit with the punishment, and the bad apples usually can find a work around for pennies.
As a scientist, he should have known better than to not wear a helmet....

Can someone give this guy a metal?

and i'm the only one with a computer problem. maybe its because the other two have to share a rather old computer while i have my own powerstation.
The reason for the different stores is the different laguage we use here up north. Instead of oh, say, "Pay Now!" It will say "Pay Now Eh?!"
