Following the monopoly on water note:
I guess if there was someone out there with the monopoly on water identical to Microsoft's monopoly on OS', then there would be other brands continuing to make headlines?
Linux water.
Mac water
BSD water.
I guess since they made the first big release of a good OS (at the time) that wasn't limited to an expensive Mac should be made illegal. Also, since no one has made anything that BEATS Windows, that should be illegal too.
"Linux is so much better than Windows!" Then why am I day in and day out using Windows over Linux, which I use at work from time to time (more so using HP Unix boxes though)? Because I am a sheep? Maybe so, or maybe it is because Linux does not offer me anything that Windows doesn't, and it's never as easy to get too. Also, my Linux machine has crashed twice and my Windows XP machine has crashed once. Apps have crashed a lot on both.
After all, it's obviously the people that legally buy the guns that are breaking the laws with them.
Oh, it isn't? My mistake.
Nice bias among Slashdot, MS cannot self-advertise, but Google can anti-advertise.
"They're a business and can do as they see fit!" So is Microsoft; that is why I hate this group of people because they have no knowledge of the real world, or sense to boot.
Or maybe it is because it is a joint venture between Microsoft and NBC?
It's not that they're not showing other's stories, it's that the order is displayed differently.
You people have no business sense and even less logic to boot. Business is driven by money; Google does not display its brand at the top because they do not have a news brand. Otherwise they would be doing the exact same thing.
They should pay for further development and possible delays for piraters (read: thieves)?
If you pirate the software, then you deserve all the crashes and worms coming your way.
You're not the unwitting victim of a policy of Microsoft, rather you're a victim of people stealing software from Microsoft.
It's like having a group of people steal a bunch of somehow flawed BMW's (lets say a tire can fly off). Lets say one of these BMWs has a tire fly off and as a result some property damage is done. Is it the fault of BMW or the thief? On the one hand, it was a known issue that BMW was fixing free for legal owners of the cars, but when the car was reported as stolen, the BMW repair centers denied entry (and they'd call the cops in reality). As a result, the accident occured.
Is BMW to blame, or is the thief to blame?
Obviously I'm playing devil's advocate here, and in real life if the above situation occured, BMW would probably be sued (even though it wouldn't be their fault since they were fixing it for free to legal owners). But still, I hope that thieves are inconvienced at every turn because I make a living off of programming, and if people are stealing my software, then they are hurting my family and I by effectively taking money from our pockets (they turn me into free labor). Does that make me a bad person? If yes, then I don't want to be good. If you build a car, and one gets stolen from the lot, do you want that person to be punished or get all the perks that a paying customer deserves?
Posted on Slashdot, which might as well be the official home of Linux users. I'm sure all of the good reports are going to really be from Linux newbies now. . .
I doubt it's office screwing them up. It's probably a poor save function.
After all, Office decides its own format so it's not like they CAN screw it up. Even if it's saved invalidly everytime, it's still the proper form. That's the beauty of being the originator.
MS cannot help it if a group of people cannot figure it out, and furthermore, they don't care. They want and NEED you to spend money on their product, not download OO. That's why real businesses tick.
I guess the truth comes out about Linux people. You are just nerds that live the closet.
Do none of you know ANYTHING about marketing? Get your product in the customers head. There is no way around it. If you've got it (the money), flaunt it.
If you think this is immoral, too bad because that's life and everyone else lives by it.
It's also convienent that the whole letter just keeps reiterating how much money they have gotten from MS. I think after the second time it would be understood.
I realize most people are going to disagree, but of all the memos leaked before this does not look real. I could care less about the spelling, but the point of the e-mail is just sad ESPECIALLY if we are considering someone leaked the memo must have been a recipient. That's not exactly a business wide e-mail. No one that high up would go try to shoot themselves in the foot at this point.
Bush Sr. sent in Marines. Bill Clinton had the Army Rangers in there and denied heavy armor support during the well known conflict that we're all thinking about (Black Hawk Down).
Bill was just a political strategist, not a military one. Somalia
I think it is a good idea. Not so much because of the Anti-virus software, but because people will go to update their anti-virus software and see Windows Updates.
I have a feeling that this is an intentional side effect, as that is the real problem in the first place as far as worms go. In terms of viruses, it's the users fault for openning the stupid file.

It's probably also why a decent number of you have been doing the "Ask Slashdot: How To Get a Job" and I haven't.

VIRUSES for unpatched systems.
I hope ALL patches get this "feature" and all pirates are screwed over.

A business releasing something with a business strategy in mind. You gus never cease to amaze me.

Someone is jealous.
Was anyone else thinking "traitor" as they read that? Just me? Oh well.
Maybe your kid won't be a misfit, but he's going to know his dad was a loser.

Here comes the flamebait rating. Oh well.
You mean if they bundled? Someone is not an MSDN subscriber.
So why wasn't that mentioned? Oh ya, bias.

Wow, this could be a very easy forgery and it looks to be.
That's your defense. Nice.
Bill was just a political strategist, not a military one. Somalia
Or maybe the Balkans (including numerous helicopter crashes there due to poor planning)?
Oh well, I guess I can be a hypocrit too.
Have none of you guys played Splinter Cell!? Come on! :)
There's an error if you have all security and 0 convenience.

They want to be recognized as their own country.
I could easily name files "windowsxp.source.tar," but that means nothing.
