    after finally being able to look at the article i was mistaken as to what they meant by AOT compile (i just thought they meant native compile from source, not what they actually mean)

    doesnt ibm have a project named daisy that is a JIT vm running on top of the very machine it emulates?

    i seem to remember reading that they were able to achieve up to 25% performance increase by doing so (by taking advantage of run time profiling of the executable)

    i might be mistaken though

    actually tracking what halo was SUPPOSED to be was pretty easy. an online gaming group i was in was tracking it until the buyout. we all pretty much agreed that the nature of the game would change considerably, and it did. originally halo was supposed to be similar to tribes.

    actually i have no interest in playing halo2 (when microsoft bought bungie i pretty much gave up any hope for the first halo being what it was intended to be,that isnt to say it isnt any good, it might be, but it isnt what was intended) but i would attempt to complete this puzzle if i lived near any of those cities.

    purely passive wardriving is NOT a crime.

    now connecting to their access point and using their internet/network for whatever... that might be, i am not a lawyer, so i cannot say. what i do know is that RF signals are not owned, for if they were i could sue for criminal trespass when the other guy's signals cross my property.

    im voting not because i expect him to win, i dont, but because i want to help turn the tide and gain support for 3rd parties. i dont even agree with whom i am voting for any more than i agree with bush or kerry, but i am so completely sick of this 2 party BS that i feel my hand is forced.

    i dont know specifically about your friends' cases, but in Illinois the school is funded based upon property taxes. one of the schools local to my area might have to shut down because of it. essentially if you live in a poor area the school gets crap for funding. this really hasnt changed with any federal legislation. i also dont think it is quite fair, as it is basically stating that kids from "richer" areas are worth more than kids from "poorer" ones. personally i think that funding should be handed out per student with each student being worth the exact same.

    i think you missed the memo. keyes is a politician... that sort of implies he wants to control things.

    thats what politicians do... enact legislation to raise their pay/retirement/benefits and screw over everyone else except the rich. this is true for both the republican AND the democratic party, they just cater to differing subsets of the rich. any candidate running in this important of an election is in someone's pocket. such is life.

    that being said i am from illinois and am completely against someone running for an office when they do not even live in the area the office is supposed to serve.... but i also think that all politicians should be limited to a single term except in extenuating(sp?) circumstances.

    call it whatever you want, but you cannot logically argue as to when it is considered a seperate entity with its own set of rights. i merely wanted to bring that up (and honestly to me from the moment of conception it is a seperate entity depending upon a host for basic necessities of life: shelter, food, warmth, water, etc..) which is why i am asking, at what point does it become something with its own set of rights?

    and liberals dont? both sides want to dictate how things should be in their ideal fantasy world.

    im probably best defined as a libertarian(sp?) with some conservative qualities.

    ignoring the flaming i am sure i will recieve over this upcoming can of worms...

    as far as abortion, what about the rights of the baby? at what point is it considered an entity with rights? conception? 1st trimester? 2nd trimester? 3rd trimester? birth? when they reach legal adulthood(18 in the US)? if the latter, should parents be able to kill their born children since they arent old enough to be considered a legal adult and therefore have rights? there is an old quote that goes somewhat like "my right to swing my fist ends at the other man's nose". so while you might have these reproductive rights you referenced, does not the baby have the right to life and by killing it you are infringing upon those rights?

    if you read the link you posted, it is only talking about tv antennas. i dont see any wording in there which would cover unlicensed 2.4ghz broadcasts. of course nothing is preventing someone from setting up a wireless card off of another computer to share out the internet in adhoc mode... technically it isnt an access point, but another wireless peer.

    at the school i attend (Southeast Missouri State University, www.semo.edu) textbooks are rented from the university. rental fee is i believe 17 bucks a book. end of the semester you give the books back.

    i think this is by far the best way to do it. if a student wants to keep the book they are billed for it, otherwise they give it back.

    i can tell you that it isnt the medical devices themselves running windows, it is usually the computer that controls it or the computer that makes the operator's life easier which runs windows.

    also windows boxes are used sometimes as a way to link the medical device into some proprietary database of patient information. the hospital i worked at had a crapload of devices in the lab which attached to this one nt4 box via serial (it had about 20 serial ports courtesy a breakout box). the serial communications were then redirected by some custom software accross a tcpip link to a server in another city.

    hospitals buy complete packages from vendors. that fancy new ct scanner might not be running windows, but the computer that can turn its scan data into a 3d model might be...and you bought both of these together as a package deal (complete with support and maintainance agreement from the vendor).

    considering that i hardly ever am in a console session where i have only 80 characters accross.... no, i care not about 80 char alignment. even when i dont load up X, i still use the fb to get a decent sized console to work in. 80 chars is just too narrow for me these days

    and replace them with who? politicians have a tendency to be idiotic morons who are corrupt to the core. they are ALL in someone else's pocket, no matter what party line they say they support. politicians who arent (or at least dont seem to be) corrupt dont tend to be reelected.

    i use a wireless microsoft natural keyboard and an ati all in wonder remote.

    the ati is as good of a mouse as i need, and i rarely have to use the keyboard but when i do, it is handy.

    i dont see how bluetooth is needed, any wireless kb should work as long as it is comfy for you to use.

    another option for the mouse is a gyration (i think that is how it is spelled). they are pretty slick, let you wave your hand through the air to move the mouse. i would get the ati remote as well though, then you have a nice remote to control the playback functionality and a basic mouse, and the gyration for any advanced stuff you want to do.

    you forget other content creation such as video editing, image editing, web development, etc...

    you are also implying that it isnt a good idea outside of the fields you mentioned. i would be willing to bet you have never spent any serious time using a dual display setup for work.

    i absolutely love dual monitor support for system administration. bring up a vnc or remote desktop connection full screen in the 2nd display while i do other things in the primary display. also i had to do some minor web editing and having a browser open in one window and the editor open in another was quite nice.

    having a dual monitor setup is quite a bit more productive for just about any job past spending the day in a word processor. downside is the lost desk space... but unless you are already rather cramped for space i think adding a second display would be very beneficial

    as for gaming, well thats something different entirely.

    i would really like to see a comparison between all of these packet filters with strength and weaknesses and maybe an example of the fliter scripts used for a few common scenerios.

    also maybe add in some ebtables+iptables stuff as well

    redhat/fedora isnt difficult to upgrade to a newer version remotely. there is this great tool called APT that was started by the debian project...

    i have used apt to upgrade from a redhat9 box to a fedora core box _while i was still using the system_
