he doesn't understand the first thing about unix/linux-- so no crontabs.:) and no-- things don't run smoothly- i spend a good chunk of my time at work doing his job.
i log my time to the same system. in passing i could see that there was only a couple of logs in the past week. no- he doesn't lift a finger outside of work. I actually end up doing quite a bit of his work. As for myself-- i'm a full time student and parent, so i dont have time to fuck around.
you must be a netadmin. and really-- you have nothing, nothing at all to base any of your assumptions against me on- fuck off.
I'm an intern at a small software company and I keep busy. That said, I sit next to a full time employee that does less work in a weel than i do in in a day (according to ticket logs and time he spends on youtube, collegehumor, etc). Just like most other businesses, the more you get paid-- the less work you actually do.
What is with headlines these days?? Just in the past couple of days i've seen headlines with the word "terror" (in quotes) just because someone quoted in the story used the word terror, and now "AT&T Stops 'Time'"? I realize headlines must be attention grabbing but this is a little ridiculous.
It seems to me that our personal computers are becoming more and more like kiosks where "vendors" install software they want and the "end users", ie) us, have less and less control over our own PCs. Think about it- DRM, (truly) hidden folders, subscriptino software, product activation,..vista?
virtually *any* linux distribution uses shadowed passwords s oour encryted password is kept in a separate file. Anyone "rolling their own" should have the forsight to do the same.
Honestly-- I prefer being contacted at work via Instant message. We have an in house Jabber sever set up. Very convienent. It amazes me how many businesses have no problem using AIM or MSN Messenger to communicate at work when it is fairly straightforward to setup a jabber server.
security is only as good as the weakest link. unfortunately, this means, in general, as the number of people in the chain grows, the number of vunerabilities increase... seemingly exponentially.
honestly you are missing the point. I should be able to download anything at the speeds they advertise. If they cannot meet those requirements, they shouldnt be advertising it. banning bittorrent shouldnt be an option.
Comcast, as well as other cable broadband internet providers advertise X Mbps connections yet they are filtering high bandwidth content? Can't we just slap these bastards with false advertising? I use bittorrent to download LEGALLY DISTRIBUTED SOFTWARE, ie linux distros. wtf?
the heuristic functions are programmed into Deep Blue, they were not self emergent-- like the operations performed in a neural network. So unless you can tell me, definitively that a higher being specifically programmed heuristics functions into Kasparov's head, I'm sure you'll agree with me when i say his chess playing ability was emergent.
While it was impressive to have a computer win against the "chess master" it accomplished this task by looking ahead as many board configurations as possible based on the current board and the probability its opponent would make certain moves. This is a stategy no human could ever employ due to the sheer processing power it requires to run all the permutation calculations. I believe a system capable of actually "learning", like a trained neural network, would be a fair match for the human brain. As it stands there is no real intelligence being used.
in many ways the wikipedia vs britannica debate is a lot like open vs closed source. One you know what changes are being made and can decipher intent, the other is anyone's guess. Wikipedia may have its shortcomings-- but at least we can see them.
I'm assuming since this is essentially a high tech capacitor it will probably withstand many more recharge cycles than a lithium ion or nickle metal hydride battery?
one of the tags on this story has it right-- FLAC, or something similar is a great alternative to raw CD audio. Flac renders 3 to 4 minute music tracks as about 15-20MB files. Sure you can get a 3.5MB file if you use mp3, but as mp3 is a lossy format you do lose sound quality, whether or not you notice. FLAC is a lossless compression format, it is open source, and at 15-20MB is is much more compact than a 100MB raw audio file. With 60GB iPods and hard drives measured in hundreds of GB I don't see FLACs file size as being an issue-- at least not for long.

for the record-- i run linux exclusively
for the record-- he's our network admin.

hmm.. since emachines merged with gateway, what does this mean for emachines? I'm a bit surprised that gateway could be bought for $710 million.

monoculture == dangerous!!
wonder if a braod patent like this could be applied in some situations to games ... say gta?

do we need any further proof that a OS monoculture sucks?
last time i checked the majority of the public didn't "believe" in science.

it amazes me that people even use the plain old ftp protocol for anything important. sftp has been around forever.

and i just learned that F5 works in Opera in Linux... hmm...

surely you've changed your oil, check fluid levels, etc.
