The author of the "article" doesn't seem to get "it" with regards to the platform.

Firstly, the documentation isn't fantastic, I agree, it's a relatively straight-forward REST api, and wouldn't you know it, the community of developers has been filling in the documentation gaps

As for instability, it's been there for the most part, you have to understand that Facebook might lack of the 100% reliability you may think your own code has. Facebook developers aren't perfect, nor is it unusual for things to break when near 25 million active users a day pound on it (at the very least, tiny bugs, image caching collisions i'm looking at you, become big bugs. As a side note, that has to have been the most famous end-table on the planet before they fixed that bug).

Finally, I've seen the "outcries over its application approval process" and those are silly as well. A very tiny percent of users actually install the application from the directory. My applications have blown up because of making use of the viral tools provided by the platform, invites, news feed postings, etc. Applications like X-Me exploded to well over 100k users before it was even listed (congrats chips), the same went for Graffiti

No system, especially a third-party system you rely on as a developer is ever perfect, but it's barely been a month since the Facebook Platform, so crying foul is extremely premature. If your only concern is that there's no one regulating the utility, then you should go ask some of those Windows developers how much fun the Longhorn-Vista moving target of a platform has been. It's their API, their platform, their social network, they get to choose what goes on with their "utility."

I'm sure i'll be marked as a troll, but this just reads like the same gripes at the bottom of the barrel in the FB Developers discussion board for some time now.
Disclaimer: I was one of the F8 attendees, and have been developing for the platform for almost 2 months now

It's BarCamp you silly goose. I would highly recommend organizing BarCampChicago similar to how we organized BarCampAustin 2 this past March. I mc'd most of the day and helped get presentations rolling and the likes. We got some of the companies at SXSWi to open up bar tabs (Microsoft, thanks to Chris Bernand, pitched in $1000 that went pretty quick, thanks to Dave Morrin from Facebook for the $500 tab and burritos too). Towards the end of the evening Soulhat played a show and we all ended up having a good time.

The most important bit with a BarCamp is that the community should be behind bringing it into existence, instead of waiting for USENIX, WWDC, or an O'Reilly conference, make your own! Have fun :)

Wow, where does one even start to combat the trolling.

If you look in the Mono.* namespace they've developed a LOT of Mono on its own, including Mono.Xml, Mono.Unix, Mono.Math and a wide vareity of other tools. Not to mention now there are various open source projects out there like DBus#, Dumbarton, and of course Tao.

Mono is a definite option now for cross-platform applications (Solaris, Linux, FreeBSD, Mac OS X, etc) and extends the compatibility to .NET 1.1 and is coming up on having a .NET 2.0 compatible class library.

Don't get yourself mixed up, Mono does allow developers to use .NET code on other platforms, but it is really a powerful framework unto itself nowadays.

In the "free software realm" why does this not have it's place as well? For that matter, I'd rather not bring Open Office into the free software realm because Microsoft is obviously going to sue everybody for using a quasi-MS-Office clone...

Please tell me how this isn't acceptable, but kaffe is? By virtue of your reasoning the entire Mono project is moot since they're obviously in cahoots with Microsoft to forbid non-Novell distros to use their open source system. Mono helps lots of people bring .NET code over to Linux, Solaris, Mac OS X and mobile devices, places Microsoft won't touch, so having VB.NET on that variety of platforms is also a good win for developers and users.

Using Microsoft's likelihood to sue people for any and every reason isn't enough to discredit an interesting project that offers options to developers and users, but then again, I must not get the whole "open source" ideal just yet.
