I bet everyone of you has wondered at least once whether it was pronounced "skyyp" or "skyypeh" or "skip" or whatever.

I should be able to patent those algorithms and, hence, recover my investment by selling software based on those unique and novel algorithms.

  12. No viable Mars-Earth rock exchange happening now on Methane-Eating Bacteria May Presage ET Life · · Score: 1

Earth and Mars are constantly seeding life to each other? Wow!

This sounds very interesting at first glance but from the same link:

There is a trap in considering average (annual) values because the transfer of rocks occurs in spikes. It is assumed that impacts by asteroids 1km in diameter or larger are needed to launch ejecta into interplanetary flight. Such impacts produce craters 20km or more in diameter. They occur on Mars and Earth (land impacts only) over typical timescales of one to ten million years.

By definition, viable transfers only take place within 100,000 years of the impact so there are long periods between impacts when Mars rocks that fall to Earth have remained in space for too long and any hitchhiking microbes are assumed to have died. There do not appear to have been large impacts on Mars (or the Earth for that matter) over the past 100,000 years so it is unlikely that "hospitable" Mars rocks are reaching the Earth at present, or vice versa.

Ergo... we are not CONSTANTLY seeding any life to Mars or vice versa

  13. Re: A police officer's view on Police Officers Seek Right Not To Be Recorded · · Score: 5, Interesting
Here is how a police officer relative of mine explained this:
(Please dont mod me down, I am just a messenger)

When you point a camera, it is not just a passive device recording events. Instead, it can actually influence the events that it is recording. A witness at a crime scene may be hesitant to say exactly what he or she thinks because he knows the neighbors may see it. People may run away or refuse to come forward because they are afraid that they will be identified later on television and thus could become the victims of a crime. A lot of things happen in police encounters and sometimes a camera can have a chilling effect on the proceedings. Sometimes the influence of camera presence can benefit society by keeping police abuses in check. Sometimes it can be a harm.

Personally, I think the police officers only have their own benefit in mind when they ask for a ban on cameras.

I am sorry but I would take this story with pinch of salt.
Could be someone is pulling a fast one on this guy?

There is nothing in the film that shows any originality or creativity in ideas. It seems like a amateur copy of scenes from "War of the Worlds" and "Independence Day".

So, what did Hollywood Studios see in this guy?

That he can make a hacky special effects film for $300? Even there, anyone can see that if you used the proper accounting methods, the budget was probaly way more than $300. All those crowds running was previously shot and reused dfootage. If he had to perform original shooting of those scenes, the budget would go way over $300. Same goes for the explosions and other special effects. He probably spent a long time on creating those but did not include the dollar value of that time which typically would add thousands of dollars to the film's budget. So, I am not seeing what he brought to the table.
Those fan-created Star Trek episodes have more going for them than this.
