    I'd imagine that actually doing so just makes you look extremely guilty, as it shows a real depth to one's paranoia (just like your disable swap and link ~/.bash_history to /dev/null)

    Why would disabling swap make you look guilty? If you have enough RAM you don't need it anyway!

    That's absurd bullshit, and you know it. The Apollo gear was designed and built from scratch in less than a decade. And that includes the tools that made the tools that made the tools! There's no fucking reason whatsoever that the same couldn't be done again, especially with the advantage of already having the damn blueprints!

    Yeah, no kidding. For example, there's one thing that's pissed me off about Slashdot since forever and still not fixed:

    When you're reading posts, there are "Reply to This" and "Parent" buttons. Then, when you reply, one of these buttons goes away and the other one stays. Now, which one do you think would be more useful to have when replying? The "Parent" button, obviously, so you can see farther back in the thread. But which button is actually there? The damn "Reply to This" button, even though you're fucking already replying!!!

    That script doesn't work if they block or spoof caller ID and refuse to identify themselves. What recourse do you have then? At that point, getting their phone number requires subpoenaing the phone company, which requires reporting the issue to the police, which I haven't done yet.

    Sad and crappy, nothing! The phone company allows this on purpose: you pay to get caller ID, the tele-fraudsters pay to block their number, you pay to override their block, they pay to override your override. The phone company wins.

    Despite numerous complaints to the DNC site, the FCC (for cell phone telemarketing) and the service providers, I still get at least one of these calls every day. The only feedback I get from any of my complaints is the FCC mailing me a copy of my complaint.

    What part of the FCC do you send the complaints to? Please post the contact information.

    Have fun asking them what company they are calling on behalf of, and what company they actually work for.

    They won't tell you; they'll just hang up. These aren't just telemarketers, they're genuine criminals: the warranties are frauds and the calls (even the first calls) are illegal.

    My girlfriend and I have been getting those too. It's illegal on several levels:

    • They aren't allowed to call cell phones
    • They aren't allowed to block the caller ID
    • They aren't allowed to call with an automated message instead of a real person
    • The whole thing is a scam anyway

    I keep meaning to file a police report, but I'm too lazy.

    Bullshit! First of all, law enforcement doesn't need that particular tool anyway -- it did just fine before FISA. Second, it would have passed even without Obama's vote. Voting against it wouldn't have hurt the poor widdle law enforcement babies, but would have allowed Obama to prove he had principles. Instead, he proved that he doesn't.

    And Saturn was a brute force approach to getting something done quickly, namely boosting 50tons to the Moon, it's not something neccesarily suitable for present day needs.

    Who the fuck cares?! It's less un-suitable than the Shuttle, at least, and that's good enough!

    Insistence on magical, unattainable perfection is why NASA hadn't built a Shuttle replacement a damn decade ago, causing this whole clusterfuck in the first place!

    Not to mention yours is a widescreen resolution roughly equivalent, anyway.

    Nah, 1400x1050 is 4:3. It's fullscreen; it's just a weird fullscreen. Incidentally, it's also a Tablet PC, so widescreen would have been horrible (as it would no longer have been similar to the proportions of a letter-size sheet of paper).

    The most similar widescreen (16:10) resolution is 1680x1050.

    That's just pitiful. IMO, even 12" screens ought to be higher-res than that nowadays (mine is 1400x1050).

    WTF?! First of all, you can't tell me they burned the blueprints, or something. They don't even need to try to "improve" on it; they can just grab the microfilm and build an exactly identical new one!

    Second, they designed and built the thing from scratch in about five years (1962 to 1967). FIVE! If they'd started making a new one right after Columbia blew up (Feb 2003), we could have had the damn thing by now (July 2008)!

    After the military realized that there weren't any rockets big enough to lift some of their planned satelittes, they pushed to greatly increase the size of the shuttle..

    What? That's ridiculous! The Saturn V could lift 260,000 lbs to LEO, while the Shuttle could only lift 53,600. Why couldn't the military just use Saturn Vs (or other rockets with payload capacity between that and the Shuttle)?
