  1. The United States has done more for world peace than just about any other country. Stopping Fascism/Communism/Stalinism just to name a few. Whatever country you are from was likely taken over by the Germans during WWII and you would be saluting His Greatness to this day if Americans hadn't intervened.

    Nobody in Pakistani government is a peace activist. They oppose all military activities targeted at the terrorists their country harbors and supports, but they have no problem with the Taliban operating in their country. Supporting peace and supporting the Taliban at the same time is not logically possible.

    In which country do you have more free speech rights than the US? ALL customs operations all over the world work exactly the same: you have no rights at the border.

    While some agents appear more polite than others, they can ALL detain someone for any or no reason without any real recourse.

    Rent-a-cop on a power trip = $$$ (for you). They have no police powers, and really no more authority than the average person. If a mall security clown really abuses you, contact the lawyer you see advertized on a bus stop bench. For no fee up front, they will sue the mall and no doubt squeeze out a settlement. Rent-a-cop will then be lucky to get a job scrubbing toilets.

    The only reason I've ever wanted to smoke is to piss off the extremely intolerant anti-smokers; the ones who think they'll get lung cancer just because they smell a quick whiff of someone's cigarette smoke while walking down the sidewalk or something. Secondhand smoke doesn't quite work like that.

    That is the usual line used by those promoting a major league sports stadium, but reality tells a different story. Pro sports hardly ever deliver the benefits that their backers promise, and in any case most cities just give any economic benefits right back to the team owners in the form of free stadiums and huge tax breaks.

    Additionally, no NFL team has ever been successful in the LA area and none ever will be. What few NFL fans there are in LA are already die-hard fans of other teams. LA douchebags have Laker and Dodger games to see and be seen at; they don't need an NFL team.

    This proves once and for all that there is no adult supervision in California government.

    While you are correct, I think the chance of a lawsuit resulting from a company's internal use of open source software is very remote, to say the least. Now if the company is considering incorporating OSS/GPL material into their product line, a full legal review would of course be necessary. But when was the last time a company was sued because a developer installed a "no commercial use" piece of free software on his personal workstation?

    Weigh the probability of being sued and the potential costs thereof with the costs of lost productivity resulting from the prevention of the use of free software.

    Regardless of the company or industry, shit policies like this are ridiculously counterproductive. The executives who come up with crap like this (no doubt at the suggestion of CYA-ing lawyers) are probably bitching out the other side of their mouths about needing to cut costs, and never quite grasp the connection between needless work and higher costs.

    A $600 brake job is a steal, unless you do it yourself. Even a discount mechanic will charge at least this much. Having the dealership do your brakes will set you back $2000 easily.

    Actually, IAAA (I Am An Actuary) and for most home and car insurance plans, the company basically breaks even. The overheads and profits come from investing the money.

    I've heard this before, and I can't see how it could possibly be true. Where is the motivation for running an insurance company if there is no operational profit? If the objective is to make money from investing, then why not just run a hedge fund?

    Software Engineering is the most incorrectly used term in history. Sure it legitimately applies in a few cases, but the vast majority of the time I see it used it means something no different than a programmer/code monkey.

    It seems like jobs that are posted with the "software engineer" title are more likely to attract extremely unqualified candidates for some reason.

    It doesn't really matter anyway. No business signs an outsourcing contract with IBM because they care about quality. They only care about doing things as cheaply as possible (but yet they still pay IBM a 60% markup for the privilege, go figure). The customer company gets the cheap labor they want and IBM gets the profits they want and the only loser is the consumer who can't talk to anyone on the phone who can actually help them.

    I'd prefer that modern journalists embrace journalism. You know, do some research for a story and make some effort to write in a grammatically correct fashion. My high school journalism teacher would have given an F grade to the majority of stories I see in leading publications today. Its sad how far this profession has spiraled down the toilet.

    Chicago is too politically correct to have anything like stop-and-frisk, and we now lead the nation in murders. Not to mention, thugs run lose in tourist areas beating up people for fun. You can google for this if you want proof - there are numerous articles. So by all means, oppose a proven crime reduction strategy. And don't be surprised when the young gangbangers come after you. What do they have to be afraid of?

    They have actually updated their "dialer" software for Windows 7, as if there is anyone who upgraded to Windows 7 but connects to the internets via dialup. There must be a group of computer programmers from the 90s that have been kept in a cave somewhere that still maintain the CompuServe network and are mostly unaware of what has changed in the last 15 years. Maybe 5 years from now they'll find out about that Facebook thing everyone has been talking about.
