Bard E. O'Neil (Insurgency & Terrorism) - "Terrorism is a form of warfare in which violence is direct primarily against noncombatants (usually unarmed civilians), rather than operational military and police forces or economic assets (public or private).
[On forms of terrorism] [...] Because these acts are carried out by autonomous, nonstate actors, they have been referred to as transnational terrorism to distinguish them from similar behavior on the part of individuals or groups controlled by sovereign states (international terrorism)."
I see. So when someone will outsource your job, maybe it is not a bad thing after all. It is just someone else's "American Dream".
They have equally much right to fight for their aspirations as you and me. It's a global competitive market; if you're not offering a better solution than others, you will not be picked.
Of course, American's are perplexed why US is generally the most hated country in the world. With this type of "American Dream"... LOL.
The hatred for the USA is far more complex than you make it seem. It is not an entirely rational argument and it is many times not even dependant on the actions of the USA, although there are many cases which are.
I've spent a lot of time both inside and outside the USA. There are a great number of misconceptions of the character and source of the hatred, as well as the nature of the USA. Just do what you believe is the right thing, you will be despised either way.
As for the American dream, I would like to give you a quote:
"I do not choose to be a common man. It is my right to be uncommon. To seek opportunity to develop whatever talents God gave me - not security. I do not wish to be a kept citizen, humbled and dulled by having the state look after me. I want to take the calculated risk; to dream and to build, to fail and to succeed. I refuse to barter incentive for a dole. I prefer the challenges of life to the guaranteed existence; the thrill of fulfillment to the stale calm of utopia. I will not trade freedom for beneficence nor my dignity for a handout. I will never cower before any earthly master nor bend to any threat. It is my heritage to stand erect, proud and unafraid; to think and act myself, enjoy the benefit of my creations and to face the world boldly and say: 'This, with God's help, I have done.' All this is what it means to be an American." Dean Alfange
That kind of negativity - however slight and between-the-lines - is just pushing more people away from Linux by reinforcing the "theirs is harder to use than ours" idea.
And what's wrong with criticising Linux? Even though Linux may or may not be claimed to be a certain thing, if that thing is required to perform a duty and it is not there, Linux will not be an option. In the above case it'd be good knowledge.
I also think it's complete BS that just because secure, flexible and easy to use hasn't been done before should imply that it can't be made. It takes more brains, sure, but a thoroughly thought through system is possible.
It's amazing how the long post above could get a +5 with only asinine by spewing empty accusations. This is why we have museums and history books, and why you need to use the brain while digesting them.
Take the Pacific war progress, the japanese resistance, the total war theory and a newly discovered weapon with consequences unknown... there's nothing more out of line with the rest of WWII. 'nuff said
Neither does Israel. Both Israel and palestine see each other as abominations under god to be destroyed. Just as many prominent palestenians have called for getting rid of all jews many members of the israel knesset have called for genocide of palestenians.
Far from all Israelies are on the extreme right wing. Their voices are however heard when discussion about withdrawing from the West Bank is brought up.
Imagine a US senator calling for extermination of indians or arabs or anybody for that matter. It would never happen in the US because we are a civilized country.
It doesn't happen because you don't have the threat to warrant that. I do not say that anybody should exterminate the Palestinians, but that you would hear calls for a far more aggressive actions if more major than 9/11 happened, such as a nuclear blast or a high level of suicide attacks. In the same way as in Israel, not from everybody, but from someone or some people.
They are the act of desparate people driven to do desparate things due to brutal, cruel and inhuman treatment by israel.
You should read up on the religion and foreign studies. Israel and the US are not alone in being threatened, and Spain was not targeted just because they had troops in Iraq. Islamic fundamentalists want to get rid of everybody who doesn't turn to Mecca. You could try telling FRANCE otherwise.
The Israel-Palestina conflict is just one exit hole for that rage.
It's not like Israel doesn't rape and torture palestenians. They have tortured tens of thousands of people in the last couple of decades.
I am sure they have tortured people in the past, which country hasn't? To explain the width of it is currently beyond my knowledge, and I doubt you have the contacts to find out, except for somebody just telling "it's so". As for raping, systematic or not? ALL groups have their 10%, whether we're talking religious, politic, sports or other. The difference is if it's ordered from above. That's not to say that a widespread epidemic shouldn't be stopped anyway, but I've never even through the normal information channels heard reports of widespread rape. Isolated instances does not appear to be comon. Verify your claims by multiple sources with evidence of those actions.
I recently read an article in the atlantic in which an israeli torturer described some of the things they did to palestenians and I got sick to my stomach just reading about them.
I just checked out the Atlantic... seems like a very independent source you got there. Why not ask Michael Moore directly?:-/
This is getting nowhere and I've got other things to do. Take care, I won't be available for responses.
I am sure they use any weapon in their arsenal. I also read history and know of the many peace deals they have broken. Why? Because they don't want to get back to the original UN lines, they want Israel exterminated, for they will always be occupied otherwise.
It's not all cream and sugar, or as somebody else put it a few months ago: "Anyone here currently in Israel have all the details about the young palestinian girl who turned herself in to the authorities recently? I remember something about how she was raped and told that unless she went on a suicide bombing mission, her family would be told she was no longer a virgin - and thus disgrace her family and herself. However, she was told, die in this bombing and you will be a martyr and your family would never have to know.
Those are not the tactics of freedom fighters fighting for 'water rights.' Those are the tactics of terrorists."
Except for the occasional bad guy, the difference is in targetting. The terrorists specifically aim for noncombatants, the Israelies do not. The difficulty of asserting who's who and the following mistakes are inevitable, but it's a question of concentrated effort. It's strategically unsound to do anything by half measures. If the Israeli military just wanted to kill all Palestinians this would have been over a long time ago, but it's still ongoing.
The term 'terrorism' means premeditated, politically motivated violence perpetrated against noncombatant targets by subnational groups or clandestine agents, usually intended to influence an audience.
The difference being that India can buy weapons from basically anywhere and China and most other "uncertain/dubious" countries can get their technology from Russia which has extensive research in the area. And France isn't exactly technology-impaired.
What's left are countries like North Korea, Cuba, Ecuador, and terrorists. Yet NK and other former allies or protectorates of the Soviet Union have access to rocket technology already, even SS-xx (SCUDs). These countries also in many cases don't have many to sell these weapons to, which makes those who doesn't have them already quite happy. I.e., they flock.
And I've got 12 mbps downstream and 9 mbit/s upstream (VDSL) for roughly $46/month here in Sweden. And no, I don't have a cap at all. Their extra pricing is for the 100 mbps fiber service, and that starts at 300 GB/month.
They can decide to not make it royalty free, effectively killing any free open source implementation. They are also likely to hold patents and infrigements of them could be held up in court. That's basically it, unless I'm missing something.
Remember who backs up SCO in this case. Microsoft. I think it's amazing that with all this legal mumbo-jumbo hitting the fan, people really trust MS not to cut off Mono. They have an incentive, they got the legal base for it, and soon they'll have plenty of cooperations dependant on a.NET platform.
No API breakage, they got all the reason in the world to maintain backwards compatibility.
P.S. On topic for being a legal issue involving some of the same characters... albeit it's not clear cut.
Personally, I'd love to see D being used instead of.NET or Java. For one, I don't trust Microsoft to let Mono live when an important part of the Linux desktop is dependant on it. Second, as for Java, it leaves too big of a memory footprint, and it is still not available on all distros.
Besides that, I don't like VMs, but that's a personal thing.:)
So, why not D? Most people knows the advantages, or can otherwise check the website [http://www.digitalmars.com/d/index.html]. It's very clean, familiar, fast and gives most or more advantages than C#/Java. It has gotten far in development. The frontend is being integrated to GCC. So why not?
I don't think that having to add every module you need to a list manually will make you a better sys admin. Of course you should know how to modprobe and rmmod, or whatever, but having to manually do it for every new install does not make you any greater.
For being a *nix guru: this is a matter of need.
Do I want to tinker with optimization flags? Ok, then I need to build my own packages - if no other package database is available.
Do I want to develop some functionality or fix it on my system? Then I do not need to rebuild my entire system, and having it done automatically by emerge would not help my learning anyway. I would just have to read up on what does what, locate it on my system, and mess it up.
Do I, as a normal user who wants to write cute e-mails in Evolution to my girlfriend, give a rat's ass which cron daemon is running? No.
The point is that not all people want to know how everything works, and if they do, they can easily find out. Gentoo with hotplug detects my hardware, that's great. Emerge build the dependancies (altough it has some trouble with it, e.g. backtracking) and so on automatically, rarely does a normal user have to mess with the ebuilds... I really fail to see why that would give me any better understanding of Linux than the next guy.
FYI, I run Gentoo on my workstation and Debian on my server - what I know about Linux is because I have had the need to know to do what I wanted, and in many cases that is not a compliment to the distros being used (X at workstation running Debian previously comes to mind).
Since it's fashionable to quote Sun Tzu and because it's applicable here, I'll have a few shots at it:
"Let your plans be dark and as impenetratable as night, and when you move, fall like a thunderbolt."
"All warfare is based on deception. Therefore, when capable, feign incapacity; when active, inactivity."
"Subtle and insubstantial, the expert leaves no trace; divinely mysterious, he is inaudible. Thus he is a matter of his enemy's fate."
And of course, the greatest: "What the ancients called a clever fighter is one who not only wins, but excels in winning with ease. Hence his victories bring him neither reputation for wisdom nor credit for courage. He wins his battles by making no mistakes. Making no mistakes is what establishes the certainty of victory, for it means conquering an enemy that is already defeated. Hence the skillful fighter puts himself into a position which makes defeat impossible, and does not miss the moment for defeating the enemy. Thus it is that in war the victorious strategist only seeks battle after the victory has been won, whereas he who is destined to defeat first fights and afterwards looks for victory."
"They hope the chips will map out nerve impulses which are sent to limbs, so that they can then be translated into computer code and sent to future artificial limbs."
I doubt anyone whose had one of these chips implanted will want to get artificial limbs after an accident then. Just imagine how boring it will be when your body starts to redo your entire life and all you can do is watch. Damn, people will be pissed!
Good response, well thought out.
The reason I think Iran won't be invaded is because they have a big youth population which, really, does not like the current leadership.
Parts of the Iranian population is turning away from the old way. An invasion might jeopardize that.
This is not about oil.
