    Good for you, if you have US passport. Not so good for other 96% of the world. They might end up in some military base established by US on foreign soil.

    -I'd argue the US contributes more to worldwide harmony than it detracts.

    You do know that demarcation line on 38th parallel was established by USA and USSR? People are fighting there for the last 50 years.

    Somehow they keep dropping anchors through 5000 feet of water to hit a cable a few inches in diameter laying on the ocean floor.

    You drop the anchor or fishing net, start dragging it on ocean floor and you hit the line on the floor some day in some place.

    No. Networks must be secure, but if you give too much control to security guys, they start abusing their position. In this case user talked about excessive restrictions on academic network. If network support applied same 'whitelisted ports only and only through proxy' policy as used on business networks, they abused their position. Academic network provides service to students. It is owned by community and not by network admins. Network users are complaining. This means that network security is too tight.

    ssh is permitted?

    No. If competent people design their firewall rules and limit access from internal to external, they don't trust user on internal network. Only whitelisted services will be allowed and even whitelisted ones will have to pass content filtering/logging proxy.

    If liberal academics don't like paranoid networks, they are free to implement own network with wifi and 4G routers. Or complain about network control abuse by support staff to dean.

    And? What is your point? I have simple top menu bar and hot corner with running apps in Gnome2. I don't need docks, but I can create one if have too. Instant app search? I don't have to search for app. I know where my apps are in menu.

    In 1983, a Soyuz rocket exploded on the launch pad. The crew was lifted to safety by the launch escape system, and there don't seem to be reports about any casualties on the ground due to this this incident.

    In 1960 R-16 exploded on the launch pad. Chief designer and 78-150 spectators/staff killed. There don't seem to be official reports about any casualties on the ground until 1989.

    Indian Air Force is mostly MIGs, Sukhois, Jaguars and Mirages. If they are buying French planes, then the bigger story is that Russians lost the bid. US was never a viable contender.

    Looters ransacking universities - oh, that's the fault of the US.

    They toppled Iraq's legislative, judicially and executive powers. Guess what happens when you remove basic administrative controls from the mob.
