  1. Re:False Correlation on Does File-Sharing Really Hurt the Music Biz? · · Score: 1

I almost never listen to music anymore. I spend a lot of time watching DVDs and playing computer games instead.

As an estimate I buy 5% of the number of CD's today compared to 10 years ago.

But the time spent listening to music is maybe 2% of the time I spent listening to music 10 years ago.

Thus if you compare the CD purchases to to number of listening hours, the purchasing has doubled, but if you just compare number of purchases it has decreased to 1/20.

Guess which figure the RIAA would quote me on.

    5) Slashdot sucks, because most people here don't see the immorality of file sharing, and don't see that incredibly expensive shows like 24 and Lost WON'T EXIST if they can't make money. We might actually be seeing the fall of good video programming. It may not exist in 10 years, except for amateur junk.

    Actually,
here in Norway at least, Lost is a huge success precisely because of downloading. People had been downloading and seeing the first episodes so a huge wave of word-of-mouth preceeded the showing of the first episodes, making it an instant hit.

And let's not forget the reason the American government exists in the first place is to SERVE AMERICANS, and that to put the interests of the citizens of other countries ahead of the citizens who elected and pay for the government would in fact be an act of treason. Just as the Nigerian government exists to serve Nigerians, and the French government exists to serve the French, and so forth. If that were true, then any non-US government aiding the US in Iraq, Afghanisthan and other places would be committing treason. And FDR was committing treason by declaring war on Germany in 1941.
I somehow doubt that's what you really meant.

I won't speak for anyone else, but when I started watching Buffy in the middle of season 4 on the insistence of friends, I immediately downloaded the first 3 1/2 seasons so I could get all the backstory, I then proceeded to watch all the new episodes on TV, but had them downloaded as well in case I missed one.
Then, when they started coming on DVD I started buying those even though I had all of them downloaded. Now I have all seven seasons on DVD.

So, they had 3 1/2 years of advertising money plus sale of seven dvd boxes.
If I hadn't downloaded I would probably never have bothered watching more than 5 or 6 episodes total.
