Better yet, store video as a sequence of light fields, and then project the field using an array of projectors onto a diffuse screen with microlenses to create an auto-stereoscopic display. (Sorry, I can't remember off the top of my head which site had the info about the microlens diffuse screen projection) I've also seen a demonstration where one places a microlens sheet over a specially generated image to create a nice "stereo" view, much like holograms but in full color.

  5. CoDiO P2P Streaming on Cringely on P2P vs Streaming Data Centers · · Score: 1

I recently attended a talk that was part of a PhD student's oral defense. He detailed a really nice streaming video system that is congestion optimized instead of rate optimized called CoDiO. I asked him how long he thinks it would take to market this, but I think he said that they're still working out the kinks in the practical application. So yeah, the technology is definitely there to stream video over P2P, but I don't know about DRM. Then again... regular terrestrial TV broadcasts aren't hampered with copy protection as far as I know, so maybe the DRM is unnecessary for broadcasts with commercials?

Since AAC is an integral part of the MPEG4 standard, and since MPEG4 seems to be gaining momentum in standalone devices, I would think that support for AAC would be a lot more widespread in the future. Besides, AAC should be getting you better quality at the same bitrate as long as the bitrate isn't insanely high.

Well, shows like the Simpsons have already made their money through advertising and the such while they were airing, so not much money has to be made from DVD sales. Furthermore, I'd be inclined to think the market for Simpsons DVDs is probably a lot bigger than your typical anime show. Hence, there probably is a lot more Simpsons DVDs being pressed than any particular anime show, which means DVDs can be made cheaper.

Lastly, anime licensing companies have a lot of fixed costs per show that they must offset, including translation, audio recording for the dub, licensing fees they pay to the Japanese company, etc. Factor that in with the often small runs of DVDs they make and the price per DVD would probably have to be high in order for them to be able to make a profit.

  13. Re:Is mainstream good? on Profitmon Catches The Dollars · · Score: 3, Informative

There used to be a recent trend (around 1-2 years ago) where more and more American companies are funding Japanese productions, so if that trend continues, you're going to see more anime catered more towards a North American audience. Geneon USA funds quite a few productions in Japan that are produced by its parent company Geneon JP. ADV used to fund some shows, too, or planned to anyway. Somehow, their current state of financial affairs doesn't bode well for more funding of anime.

Now Tokyopop is calling all of them manga, including American made ones. "American Manga" to me sounds like an oxymoron. In fact, most of their "American Manga" do not resemble most Japanese manga art at all. While I do appreciate Tokyopop trying to forge a new market, but there doesn't seem to be any real merit to using 'manga' instead of 'graphic novels' save for the length of the word. The only thing I could think of is that it's just there for marketing purposes.

The most experience I have with "hacking" would be to patch Japanese games so that they start displaying English instead. While the majority of the expertise needed and used is more of a science, like knowing how the underlying operating system/hardware works or how images and placed on the screen, the extra step required for a good, elegant hack is something that's more like an art. You really have to start getting creative when you need to figure out how to modify the code given serious size constraints, or how to make the smallest patch so that it has the least chance of unexpectedly breaking something else. I would assume the same could be said about other types of hacking. The basic, low-level grunt work is probably more like a science, but to get that extra ounce of elegance in the finished product, that is art.
