i cant see why current drivers cant be shipped on a small amount of flash memory built onto the card.
flash memory is *cheap*, drivers are relatively small - 32MB would likely be plenty to house drivers for a variety of OS's. the flash mem could use a standard OS driver eg. mass storage device.
this goes for all but the cheapest devices... rather than educating every pc user to understand the process of 1) identify device 2) locate manufacturers website 3) download appropriate driver for device/OS 4) install, the whole pro ess could be alot simpler.
yes the drivers would eventually become out of date but so are the drivers that are distributed on CD, its still better than nothing, and because its just flash memory, the drivers could be updated on the device automatically if you ever install a newer downloaded driver.
yes its not *quite* as cheap, but how much neater would it be if each device in your puter could identify itself and suggest a driver rather than throwing its hands in the air and explaining to you that the computer has detected another 'unknown device'.
over.
for a long time now ive been wanting a streamlined phone that has fewer 'features' (ie. no camera, no music, no colour screen even) but has decent connectivity (ie. infrared, bluetooth, 3G data modem - for use with lappa, not using to browse directly) and *kick* *arse* battery life.
screw charging my phone every day, screw infinite flashy menus - give me something really straight forward, like the simple text menus on an ipod. a robust reliable business phone that can take a beating.
im no technophobe, but i really appreciate good tools - and i havent seen a phone in a long time that i actually *want* to buy!
can anyone suggest any manufacturers who make this kind of stuff? are there any models out there that really fit this description?
maybe thats just it... perhaps because there is not a big functional reason to switch to HD geeks just arent bothering to. Or the reverse is, those that are buying these sets dont really have the geekiness to figure out how the damn thing should work.
i guess its also indicative of a technology that is too complicated for the average consumer. if there were perhaps simple lights on the front of the display people may pay more attention... eg. a green light for standard def that cahnges to blue when the set is operating in HD mode.
ahhh whatever, i dont really care enough about this stuff really anyway.
the citrix www.gotomypc.com service offers a free trial - that also requires a credit card. i was pretty suspicious but really wanted to trial the service so gave it a shot...
as it turns out, when the trial period expires they charge you for the next month, ie. its an *opt-out* 'free' trial.
not only that, but you cant even email them to opt-out, you have to call them during *their* business hours... this really gave me the shits being in singapore and having to wait around till they decide to pick up the phone.
lets hope these characters arent going down that path... roping people into ongoing payments is pretty high on my do not touch list.
Its pretty likely ive just been hiding under a rock somewhere, but does the Voice Recording section under 'Customisable Settings' mean the native can record through the minijack now?
"# Voice recording settings:
* Low (22.05 KHz, mono)
* High (44.1 KHz, stereo)"
44.1kHz stereo too... ive always had a grudge that something this high tech cant record (without some other dongle), though in all likelihood its just a bogus extra option for when you do have _that_ dongle attached.
so why not just torrent up the most recent episodes then and move them to your pet 'distrobution network' once the peak demand has passed?
i think even akamai would struggle with/. all pounding a large video file at once...
why is it that so often/. 'news' turns up in an australian paper? yes im an australian, and im just curious...
is it because aussie papers are being written as US papers sleep?
is it because US papers simply dont want to report this stuff?
is it because US papers dont want to rock the boat?
i dont know... but it seems to me the SMH gets mentioned *alot* - make me wonder why.
i travel to iran often with work and slashdot is one of the few sites that i check that can still be accessed.
the filtering there is hardcore.
in april there was a political clash with some local arabs and a few were killed - the net to our city was cut off entirely for 6 days or so. no one knew what was wrong, or could give us any info. i eventually found out from a friend that works at the local ISP that the govenment had ordered the cut.
Projectors.
Ever tried sitting on a couch playing HL2?
sometimes you *cant* sit right in front of your screen. being able to throw my logitech media desktop keyboard and mouse around the lounge is just brilliant. aint cheap, but because it has range too (10m, bluetooth) i can plonk on the couch type and game away. i would buy this again for sure.
im so glad the parent gave a genuine response to this question.
i went to CS school in australia and had a similar expererience with the overwhelming white minority - which left me a little curious as to why.
it just seems like these days, any sentence that mentions two or more cultures these days in a non blatantly endearing manner is subject to racism - which is really not the case.
its a straight up fairdinkum question, its nice just to hear a fairdinkum answer for a change.
Finally, an intelligent post!
This does not replace anything to do with your precious BIOS (and its just fantastic to hear that so many of you know what it stands for).
It just means you can listen to your music without booting your machine everytime - a pretty nice feature IMHO. Perfect for dorm style living or reducing the number of devices you need lying around.

when oh when will they bring out a decent sized bluetooth mouse that has a retractable USB charging cable?

i find it really hard to believe MS doesnt have existing internal documentation on the format. sounds like a rotten carrot to me...

That is a crappy analogy becuase it makes no analogy - its the same bloody thing.
