    DOH!

Actually I think that anything is possible. Mactel kinda proves this.

Windowes being the right side of things, being easy for everyone to use.
Linux being on the left, open, not so user-friendly, stable.

There is mac that is bringing it up the middle. Stable yet user-friendly. Gonna kick some Linux-complaceny in the pants.

I think that MS might be really considering that they can bring it together too. The usability of windows and the stability of *nix.

I know good name for their new OS!

  9. Re:Read your employment contracts on Ex-Microsoft Exec Barred From Google Job · · Score: 2, Interesting

Disney has something similar. I had a freind that worked as a painter. She worked on animation cells and 'filled in the spaces' with solid colour after the animation was drawn.

Her contract said specifically that anything that you create while under their contract, they get right of refusal on. If they say no, then you cant sell it.

So, if you write some music while you were employed there, they own it.

Tim Burton was sued (and lost) bu Disney for the same thing. He went to them with NightMare Before Christmas. They told him that they had no interest in producing the movie. He did it anyway.

Contracts can stretch what you think is right or not. But once you sign, you are preatty much bound to them.

I remember all that too. I had a C64 with a tape drive.

I saw thw movie wargames and was blown away by the idea that computers can 'talk' to each other.

Once i got a modem I never looked back. I think a lot of the nostalgia comes the idea that there was more of a sense of community there. The internet was unheard of until I had a coffee with someone once, who explained a bit (prolly 94 or so). I remember playing MUDS (circle) and really enjoying what was happening. AS much as more modern MMORGS
have a bigger, better look, it is still lost with the community feeling. I played on GalaticBattlegrouds, and played for months befoer i hooked up with a great guild. But that was shortlived. I lost the real want to play.

  12. From the Patent on Microsoft Frowned at for Smiley Patent · · Score: 1

Sorry if this dupes. But this is part of the patent explaining smilies in IMS. Odd how they are concerned about the "custom smiley". [0019] Many real-time messaging applications aim to minimize data for transmission. An instant message or chatroom communique that contains very streamlined data is referred to herein as a "lean" message. To include one or more custom emoticons in a lean message would degrade the performance of many instant messaging or chatroom applications. Thus, the subject matter also includes exemplary techniques for sending a lean message to a receiver wherein one or more custom emoticons appear in the lean message at the receiver's end.

They would all rush in, trying to buy them, and usualy end up in fights. It even happened with talking Elmo (but not as much). How many adults lined up to see star wars months before ?
