Gamestop Not Taking Wii/PS3 PreOrders Yet

Next Generation is reporting that Gamestop has declined to take preorders for the Wii and PS3, on the grounds that they don't know how many units will be available at launch. They're apparently trying to avoid a repeat of last year's problems with the 360's launch. From the article: "Analysts also inquired what would happen if PS3 launch quantities fell short of expectations. '[Last year,] the 360 in short supply had an effect of freezing the market,' said DeMatteo. 'But if you look at it, there wasn't anything new. I mean, there weren't any new platforms out there, so the 360 was the newest thing in the last four or five years. This year, there will be a Wii and there will be a 360, so I can't believe that it will have the same kind of impact that the 360 [shortages] had.'"

I talked to a GameStop employee about it one day and got some info. I don't think this guy was a manager, but he seemed to know his stuff, so you can take this with a grain of sale if you like.

First, according to the guy I talked to, they will start taking pre-orders, at soonest, after their next "manager meeting", which is taking place around the time of the Leipzig (sp?) thing where Nintendo will announce final pricing and release dates.

Second, they will be raising the reservation price. Instead of just chunking down $25 or $50, you will now put down a good portion of the price. This is to discourage people who aren't going to pick up the thing on release to shy away.

One of the GameStops I visit normally had a "Registration Notification" thing you could fill out with your name and phone number, and they would call you once the systems go on reservation. By raising the price of pre-orders, they might discourage people from pre-ordering several units. If I were a game speculator fatty, $300 per reserved PS3 would definitely cut into my butter fund. If the reserve price were $25, it's a lot easier to just not buy the extra units if there turns out to be no market.

If my reasoning here is correct, then this would in turn benefit people who just want to get a system. With less speculators, more "actual" gamers can get a system and not have to deal with waiting in line or waiting for a few months until stores can keep the system in stock.

Okay, it certainly won't have the same effect on the market as a whole as the 360 shortages (might have) had. However if not having enough of a product to sell people is bad, not having enough when there are two competing products is _really_ bad. Convincing people to buy a $500-$600 console is hard enough, but if they show up at the store to buy one and the store is out but there's a 360 and possibly a Revolution there in stock there's probably going to be at least some temptation to get one or both of them instead.

Yes there is that possible temptation but its not likely nor a very strong temptation. For the people that are unsure as to which one to buy that walk into a store and see three displays they will go with the one that has sold the most. The thinking is that "well if everyone else is buying that one then I need too also". Obviously this is not always the case but humans want what other humans have. I think that the number of people that will be unsure is small in comparison to the ones that "need" a specific console.

Christmas is an insane time and if you "need" a PS3 and Store A does not have one it is very unlikely that you will just buy a Wii instead. Likely what will happen is you will ask the clerk who will tell you that "...the PS3 is in very short supply and is the hottest item of the year..." This perceived scarcity will add to the insanity and the "need" for that console. This mentality could be true for either the Wii or the PS3. If one or the other becomes the hot item then you will see news stories about people standing in lines to buy "the hottest item of the year". We see something like this every year.

I am not saying that this buzz is going to happen for the new consoles but it could and if it does then no other product will satisfy those people. Last xmas people that were looking to buy a 360 did not say "..oh well, I will just get them a GameCube or XBox or PS2.." They were either buying a 360 or they were buying something very different - like a television or an iPod.

I don't know if my friend can confirm it, but they do get a lot of bonuses (read 'kickbacks') when their stores do well. And corporate would often offer bonus stuff for stores that pushed x copies of [insert new game here].

The guy would tell parents that GTA wasn't suitable for kids, and the manager would tell him to go help someone else while he tried to sell a game to mom. Happened a lot and got my friend in heaps of trouble because he'd tell the parents flat out what was in the game. Thus, stopping parents who can't read/understand the ESRB notices on games like Manhunt from puchasing it for thier six year olds.

I've seen it in almost every Gamestop or EB Games I've ever stopped in and I make it a point to try to educate parents with screaming kids about games they pick up, because the managers don't care. I've met a lot of parents who weren't well informed about the ESRB ratings and were VERY thankful for a small explenation. Most of them just don't notice because it looks like another part of the box.
