    If they want to have the immunity and benefits of "common carrier" then yes, the FCC does explicitly have the authority.

    The FCC regulates communication. The ISP is deemed to be providing communication services. The FCC, as my brother would say, regulated their ass. Not everything has to be explicitly written in law.

    FTA Disney is not participating. Of course it's so they can continue their limited time offers of movies and return them "to the vault" for another 10 years. This would put their movies on the same footing as everyone else's and they've managed to turn the "scarcity" into a marketing tool and sales enhancer.

    What, and Democrats haven't done the same thing? Were you around for the debate on social security privatization? If you listened to them back then you'd have thought that the GOP was aiming to put America's seniors into concentration camps.

    While it might not have been quite that bad, imagine if the GOP had succeeded and everyone's retirement was 100% in private accounts (ie the stock market) today.

    Yeah. Employees should be allowed to show up on the property at their scheduled time and be paid even if it takes them 20 minutes to get to their desk. I've worked many a job where the "relief" employee had the additude that they only had to be close to their job to be counted "on the clock". Employees should be to work in time to turn on the lights and be ready to work when the clock strikes starting time.

    Software companies don't even warrant or guarantee that the software will run. Hardware manufacturers are definitely held to the higher standard here.

    Nope. MyFICO The scores you get from the credit reporting agencies are generally not the scores that are actually used to extend credit and thus are not even worth the paper they are printed on - or the pixels on the screen.

    Their front page is (and always has been) right up front that they are selling you a service. They even give you the link to the "real" free credit report. Name aside, they don't seem too shady. There are plenty of opportunities to buy something you don't need, this is just another one. It's like buying clothes that say "dry clean only" right on the tag. You know what you are getting up front.

    And the FTC is really looking to hammer them on the "free" credit report. The FTC tried to get the domain name due to freecreditreport.com being misleading and too close to the government's own site.

    I think you'll find a Windows system tends to provide nine sixes in serious production environments.

    As long as you don't count "planned reboots" critical software updates, etc. in your definition of uptime. Cause a machine you are forced to reboot over software installation doesn't count as having been "down".

    The article also stated that the *nix solution will be faster to implement changes and upgrades, will be more streamlined and coherent as it is a "whole" solution as opposed to a number of disparate systems/parts that do not communicate as speedily and efficiently with each other.

    Just reconfigure autorun on the USB drives to lock the computer up. Say it renames c:\boot.ini or win.ini and splashes a bogus blue screen so they reboot... yeah that would be fun.

    Maybe if I educate the owner that there is almost a 10% chance of him sending his day-trading activities to some guy in Russia, he will start to listen about moving to the linux based thin client solution I've been touting for years... nah, then he wouldn't be able to day-trade using those fancy tools.

    The thin client set up doesn't change whether there is a bot on the server or not. Having said that there are some Java based cross-platform trading tools being developed by TDAmeritrade.

    No. Data is not property. It's data. It's not even copyrightable.

    Again we need to stop blaming the victim. Just because I leave my car unlocked does not give you the right to steal it or the property inside it. Its still theft. Just like a store. They dont lock up all their merchandise, so that means you should be able to just take it without paying for it? No of course not, its still stealing.

    In this case, it's like someone walking down the street with a large hole mesh bag and getting mad cause your crap fell out on the sidewalk and someone else picked it up... then telling the person who picked up your crap to buy you a new bag. Cause you were too lazy or stupid to use a solid bag - or at least one with small enough holes to keep your crap in it.

    If they only got back what they paid in fine. How about when they get back what their childless neighbors paid in? They all pay the taxes. Why should part of my taxes have to go to a private school that teaches "creationism" because my neighbor doesn't want his kids to hear about evolution? And yes, this does happen.

    But parents DO have an option for school. They can put their kids in private school or they can home school. The vouchers are just a way of saying that they don't want to pay in to the government-run system.

    Huh? They do pay into the government run system. It's called taxes.
