I think it has never been a problem of jamming the communications but rather a problem of making money out of the situation.
Now it may be even harder to make people understand that the communications were never an issue without triggering reactions such as "you lied all this time to us". They will need to find some way to market it and make money out of it.
The only issue that scares me is that in the case of a crash or terrorist attack people could try to send data to their families or ground police.
Or we could just put their signature in an antivirus/antitrojan ?
Which is basically the result of the work of people working in companies using reports, honeypots and their brains.
If electricity price rises, more will turn to gas, there is also an effect that keep the price of power sources together.
Software is only different by the fact that producing another copy has virtually no cost, once the development has been made.
It is actually a dead-on example of the fact that price charged to a customer is not related directly (it is not a linear relation) to the prices occured in development phase.
Do this tomorrow:
- Ask a student how the price of is computed by the company selling it
- Ask a salesman how the price of is computed by the company selling it
- Ask an engineer how the price of is computed by the company selling it
- Ask your tech support how the price of is computed by the company selling it
- Ask an executive how the price of is computed by the company selling it
They will have to still support XP even if Vista was selling, you know, us corporates, run on very old software because some people are still testing that apps written in the 80s is still compatible with XP SP1...
Heck we are not even sure that we can switch to Office 2003 because of all the VBA code written by interns who left the company years ago...
It doesn't matter as much of the consumer base will have to switch to Vista some day, because of idiotic policies and support guys. They will find a way to push you to Vista by using either Dot Net or some patching support.
When they will discontinue support and patches for XP, companies will move out from XP, for now their only issue is to patch Vista so discotinuing XP will be possible one day.
There is no proofs for now that it is dangerous, I just want the food that I eat to come from the healthiest possible animals, nor some weirdo animal that has to be fed with antibiotics and stuff to keep it alive.
Of course you can reply that:
you can still eat organic crap, that is true but personally I do check what I eat, and that is my own personal choice
the actual meat is produced in large batteries of ill animals. That is true but as far as I can trust the labels, the food I eat does not come from these.
nothing proves that their genome can be dangerous, true but these animals have defects in a massive percentage, did someone check that all these defects (each of them) cannot cause any problem ? Do you know that the famous mad cow disease is only caused by a simple protein ? That it was not traced until quite recently just because there were no evidence (well on such a small sample it was hard to find evidence)
Sorry if you will find me paranoid, I agree that there is no evidence, it is not proof, though, that it dangerous or not. Maybe it isn't maybe it is, but the thing that I know is that it has very few chances to be better than normal food and that my grandma was eating normal food and did not die from it.
I see your point but in the UK we had the mad cow disease.
For years when it was just discovered we had people claiming that it could not affect humans, we do not even know the real effects of OGM (some years ago people found out that OGM modified genes are kind of released in your digestive system, although it does not seem dangerous in itself, there should be tests for every modified genes.
I am not saying we should ban cloned food nor OGMs, I am just saying that we lack the expertise to test the effects on long term view on humans.
The industry is full of products like paints, asbestos family of products, pesticides, lead poisoning causing saturnism, all of these were used for the so called "opportunity cost" before we noticed that their could affect even embryos.
Is that too much to just ask to label the products ?
We do not know if it is more dangerous, but all cloned animals have defects (I am not saying the majority has defects, ALL of THEM do).
Maybe it is not dangerous, the thing that I know is that many generations survived eating non cloned stuff, so I find it fair to have a label, so you can eat your "I do not know if it dangerous but I do not care" meat, while I can eat my organic food...
Do you see medication sold before they do extensive testing ? Why after all, we do not know if it can kill people ? That's exactly your flawed logic...
Scientists found out that Dolly is actually one of the best clones ever made, most of the attemps done on mammals did not give as good results.
When we speak about defects, we mean that none of them is normal, natural born animals have defects usually but in a lesser percentage and do not transmit to the next generation these problems if too important since they just die before to be able to...
I dunno about where you live, but here under the EU law it is mandatory to provide this service (although most of the shops here in the UK will say otherwise).
I think most of the people didn't even report to Sony.
If a DVD was not working, I would just bring it back to the shop, the second time I would exchange it for another DVD (not the same movie).
My 2 cents on what probably happened is that they did not count all the returns for these titles, they just counted the people who sent emails complaints or called their hot-line and who told specifically about the DRM problem so they could minimize the problem, which is alot better for them from a marketing point of view.
The problem is quite easy but when it comes to technology you cannot expect Joe and granny to be knowledgeable about computers. For us, it is common sense but you just have to watch in the office other people to know that this problem is not as easy as we could think it is.
My personal opinion is that all emails programs should display at the installation a big warning and explanation about phising, malware, spyware, scams... etc
In addition to that, on the welcome page of the email client, by default, you could have the latest news about scams. Also some link with a website that displays on the top of an email which is suspect a reason explaining why it may be dangerous to open this email (something like "we have found that this email matches a scam sent over the internet, you risk losing your bank information,... blah blah blah".
Another problem is tracability, it is due to the email protocol, but it should be changed to have a secure ID linked to it, not be a protocol where any SMTP server can send its own name without check from the servers relaying the message.
But if someone put a paper saying "Go crash yourself into a tree", he has a great chance to get arrested and nobody would crash into a tree as it is common sense.
Just my 2 cents, I am fed up of seeing this kind of things happening without possibility to retaliate against the persons issuing these malware.
Take the number of accidents due by cars, it should be computed every year, remove all the people who died by major reasons (like drunk drivers, mobile phone,...), which cannot be accounted by ambulances (you could argue that I have no proof that they were not drunk... but common sense dictates you that you would see headline saying "drunk ambulance driver was driving... blah blah" if that happened.
Compute an estimation of the number then...
I do not even know why I am posting this, it is common sense, the new credo is... if you do not have proof, do not believe it.
