While I think the idea of simulation recreating actual events is interesting, part of me questions the wisdom and taste of doing this with an ongoing conflict. To abuse a metaphor, it's not picking the scab off an old wound, because that wound hasn't even scabbed up yet.
...we need to decide just how important the ideology of adventure actually is. You seem to think the answer is "very important". Fair enough. It's probably a much better argument than scientific research.
An excellent point. I'm too young to distinctly remember the psychological impact of landing on the moon, but I would have to guess that the sense of adventure and accomplishment that was fueled by that event drove many technological advances ever since.
Heck, as a child, my curiosity in science (which led to a career in science and engineering) was probably directly related to this event in particular. To me, that's a compelling reason to continue this sort of adventurous exploration. The payoff may not be seen immediately or directly, but may be significant.
I think that's an interesting point that many gamers on a budget forget - By turning of just a few of the detail options, you can often get very satisfactory performance running a state-of-the-art game on previous-generation hardware.
Can you imagine the FBI then subpoenaing PayPal and getting the names and addresses of everyone that contributed?
That's one reason I won't contribute... In the current political climate, it wouldn't surprise me if anyone contributing to his defense fund was classified as "supporting a terrorist".
Yes, that's a stretch. But really, considering the Patriot Act was invoked in this case, which had nothing whatsoever to do with terrorism, I don't see it being worth the risk.
The coolest thing about Infocom games (other than the games themselves, which were not only fun but taught me how to type) was the trinkets that they shipped with.
Anyone remember the "evidence" that came with Deadline, including two "pills" that were actually Smarties candy (yeah, I ate 'em)? Maps, booklets, and other details like that really helped set the stage for those text adventures.
I personally won't download games from "warez" sites, but I'd bet that if more care went in to the final product, people might value them more.
Finally, a perfect application for my 40-mile-long wifi antenna... made out out of cat-5 cable.

Wait a minute, weren't you just claiming how high unemployment was during the Clinton administration? When you thought that, it was his fault. Now that you're shown that you were wrong, you give credit to Congress? Brutal.
You just don't like rich people.
Now you're just being deliberately obtuse.

Considering that population growth ALONE requires that 150,000 new jobs be created each month just to break even, that's not very impressive.
The Fed is worrying about inflation because our economy is growing so fast.
Didn't take many economics courses, did you? The Fed's worried about inflation because of the growing national debt. History repeats itself, look at the correlation between national debt and inflation during the Reagan years. Besides, if the Fed were worried that THIS economy is growing so fast, they must have been terrified during the dot-com boom of a few years ago. Oh, that's right, they weren't worried then, either.
John Ashcroft hasn't eroded any freedoms. When's the last time you got investigated by him?
Sorry, but I look at things beyond how they just affect me.
I'll tell you one thing, John Ashcroft didn't vote for the Patriot Act, but John Kerry did.
John Kerry voted for the Patriot Act as a temporary means of handing a tough situation. John Ashcroft is trying to make the changes permanent.
For that matter, George W. Bush didn't declare war, but John Kerry did. George W. Bush doesn't have the power to declare war, only congress does.
Are we rewriting history now? Dubya persuaded Congress (controlled by the Republicans, of course) to turn that authority over to him, and they did. I'll never forgive any of them for that mistake.
If this nation is going down the crapper, than I condone the crapper!
Apparantly you do. It's a shame you can't base your opinions on what's actually happening, rather than what you've been told is happening. I've said it before and I'll say it again. Turn off the TV and do your own research. It's not difficult.

Unemployment is below 6% Under Clinton, that was considered full employment. In the Bush world it's a shambles?
Nice try. Where'd you get your facts, O'Reilly? Try looking them up for a change, and you'll see the real unemployment numbers under Clinton. Look, I'll even provide you a link. From there, you can generate graphs that will show you that unemployment was highest under Clinton right when he took office (surprise), and declined the entire 8 years. Unemployment was never above 5.6% in his second term.
Extreme upper class? you mean a family of four making $40,000 or more per year?
No, I mean the extreme upper class (>$311k) that got almost twice the tax cut percentage wise (3.6% vs. 2%)that everybody else did. If you don't beleive it, go look it up on the IRS web site. Nice try at misdirection, though.
You want to see brainwashed, look in the mirror. Better yet, EDUCATE YOURSELF by doing your own research and not listening to the talking heads that have an agenda. The fact are out there. Look them up. Not only will you learn something, you might even draw some conclusions that will surprise you.

President Bush really inspires me, and I want him to win because I really think he is doing an awesome job.
How in the hell could you actually think he's doing an awesome job? The economy is still in shambles, the national debt is at an all-time high, we go to war, and this administration is still pushing for tax cuts to the extreme upper class.
Any good will that the United States had immediately after 9/11 has been squandered thanks to arrogant and stubborn foreign policy.
Thanks to the appointment of a prude like John Ashcroft, our freedoms to make choices about what we can do and say are being eroded. The Patriot Act is an obscenity against the Bill of Rights.
I wonder - do you actually understand that you're helping support the good-ol'-boy club that Bush and Cheney belong to (which, by the way, you DON'T belong to)? If you don't know that they're using you to further their own gains (NOT the best interests of the country), then you really need to pay better attention to current events. And that means turning off Fox News, Rush, and O'Reilly and doing some reading of your own.
This administration has been a dismal and total failure on many fronts. You may not like Kerry, but regieme change must occur before this country goes completely down the crapper.

Ironically, the first link at the bottom of the article is "Who conducts the crappiest polls?"... Gee, that's just what I was wondering.
There's one way to enact change on this front - register to vote, then in November vote Bush out of office. This has got to reach a point when even registered Republicans have had enough.
I, for one, don't welcome our Christian fundamentalist government and it's regulation of morality.
Well, maybe you could elaborate on that. I recently bought a G4 PowerMac, and it's at least as loud as my home-built AMD machine (which isn't too quiet either). And both are louder than the P4 I use at work.
Not that I'm necessarily disagreeing with your statement, but a blanket statement like "Get a MAC" isn't too helpful.
The K6-II+ and K6-III+ are fantastic processors for low-heat applications, because they were intended to be used in notebooks. I ran my email/web/firewall on a K6-III+, overclocked to 550MHz, for years. It was cool, quiet, and so freakin' stable that I would reboot it every couple of months just for kicks.
On the other hand, I had a dual Athlon-MP machine that was like an oven. Really nice computer, but it had to go, because it made my computer room too hot.
I, too, am looking forward to an Opteron-based system in the future. As a former AMD employee, they'll always have my financial support as long as they continue to produce innovative products.
In this case hard drives have become so "cheap" that we end up buying them at twice or 3 times the rate. Add it up, are we saving that much money?
I agree with you 100%. I would be happy to pay double for a hard drive that I know would be reliable for a long time. In addition to worrying about my data integrity, I also abhor the thought of needlessly contributing more garbage to landfills.
And yes, I know that I could double the cost by buying a second drive to mirror the first, but doing that is noisy and hot. And I'd still have to replace one every times one fails.
The lawyers, as usual. In every class action lawsuit that I've been a part of (as a member of the class), they're the only ones making any money.
That in itself doesn't really bother me, it's just that the whole thing seems like a waste of time, money, and resources.
Yeah, and Vader gave Ben Kenobi a "flesh wound" during their light-saber duel.
I also liked the Suspended package, which came with a nice map and tokens that you could use to keep track of your 5 or 6 robots. I miss Poet.
