If it doesn't pan out but you still think that the idea would be fun to play if you could just find people to help build it by growing a community around it. Sure it won't pay but it might be the thing in your portfolio that will lead to the job that does.
I'd prefer that than to the Marketing Hype laden windows world view of "It's new and from Microsoft so you must want it".
If something doesn't work in Windows let Microsoft convince you to pay for an upgrade. One creates a self dependency for either make it, work around it or live without it, the other just creates dependency.
I'll say what I say to all the people here that try to give me data in excel - XLS IS NOT A DATA FORMAT.
Don't do it.. don't encourage it.. don't accept it. Excel is the great data mangler.
The one remaining question is mindshare. For example, pretty much every ISP offers MySQL as part of a basic hosting package.
This is probably what makes it so damn attractive. Taking control of what people have come to rely on, even in tiny ways, makes them either beholden to you or new enemies.
.Instead look at changing GPL to accommodate a company that is (in its own way) delivering on the goals that FSF was created to accomplish.
What? That would be a very, very sad day. I had to read that statement 3 times. Forgive me if I misunderstand you but I get the feeling that you are suggesting that the GPL bends to support the activities of Apple? Again, a very, very sad day.
I have an iPhone, I have had one for a couple of months now and have been using it everyday. It's not bad. There are some very nice things about it and there are some very idiotic things about it. The one thing that I constantly complain about however is the reception - it is just no good. I performed several tests with my previous phone and the iPhone consistently failed to get ANY signal where the other phone got at least 1 (and sometimes 2) bars. This is not a sign of a good phone. When your sitting with a strong signal, I've no complaints with it but I'm getting tired of walking around my office and having the call drop out from no signal. As a cool gizmo and a "shape of things to come" it is excellent. As a phone it is mediocre, as a low end phone camera - mediocre, as an ipod it's fine, as an organizer it's fine if you use a Mac and mediocre if you use a PC and a headache if you use linux.
This is just my personal experience with it, I have several other friends with them that have similar problems. I think the next version of the iPhone will solve these problems and will be something to behold, but the current one is not as shiny as the cool kids would have you believe
Excellent, couldn't agree with you more. I currently work as a professional database developer but have written a lot of business/desktop style "middle ware", recently I decided to learn ruby/rails and do some web-based stuff - it's not the language that I struggled with it's the features that I took for granted in desktop apps that webapps have their own unique problems AND work arounds. As someone that wants to consider themselves as a programming artist I realised that I have to constantly expose myself to new programming shapes/problems. It can only make your whole programming experience more powerful. The best example of this is when I see the new data developers using SQL like a procedural language - loops and cursors. I explain to them that just because the features exist doesn't mean that it's the right way to go about it, to look for the philosophy of the language.
The world has gotten so used to expecting so little from the internet (and MS browsers in particular) that the standards are regressing to match. The alternative is too horrible to contemplate (that ie 5.5 was ahead of it's time).
That is MS speak for we will see if the partners (read manufacturers) want it otherwise we will keep pushing a system that requires people to update their hardware. I don't get the feeling that the "customer" they are listening to is the general WinXP using consumer...
Cool tech but in other words you're saying that this notebook shouldn't be your only computing device in the house? Or again in other words, buy a macbook air and then a macbook or imac just in case you need to reinstall or watch/rip a dvd?
More likely "They'll make a machine last until the first major components dying day." You over estimate the build quality of these machines. More often than not, the people buying them are actually considering them disposable machines. I can't see the manufacturers losing out any way you cut it.
I had a similar experience to this when I was at a birthday party for friend which was heavily attended by theatre people. I was surprised when one of the actors started talking about how happy they are now that they have moved over to linux, only to find out that at least one other person (in a group of 7) chimed in with "me too". So that was 2 running linux (ubuntu), 2 running XP, 2 running Vista and one person running a Mac. Both Vista users were complaining about how it came with their computer and that they were considering paying someone to put XP back on.

Yeah but you might level up your programming skills in the process. :)

sounds like in each airport lounge there is a cluster waiting to be discovered! :)
Or Vin Diesel.
but will it take full advantage of my 64bit processor? Can anyone point me to the ported version? k thnx bye.
I can sleep at night now.
I was with you until you suggested drinking a Miller Lite... guess it's back to being a beer snob then.
Lack imagination much?

I think you meant "custom safety.NET band!"
Matt Damon 4 Muad'Dib :P
Isn't it always tipped lately that any newly announced sci-fi movie will lead by Matt Damon?

but is it better to go that way or at the hands of "deaf gnolls"?
Good call.. Tell them it's worth $150 and they can send the cheque to the EFF, OLPC or any other Opensource project/charity needing the money.

They are going to start using Gnome? ;)
Microsoft Vista - It's what all the 13 year olds want!
Exaggerate much
