I'm not sure the methodology for this study is adequate to draw these conclusions. It asks: of iPod owners, of those who are likely to buy a new music player in the next 12 months, 58% said they were somewhat likely or very likely to buy a Zune. However, if you own an iPod, and plan to buy a new one, you are already selecting a segment which is relatively more likely to be disloyal/unhappy with the product. Not that it's a complete correlation, but most people, really, aren't frantically trying to replace a music player which works adequately for them. However, people who strongly dislike the iPod, or iTunes, or Apple, or whatever, are quite likely to want to replace it.
I would like to know, of iPod owners, if they were to buy a new player, what would they get, irrespective of whether they are planning to buy one. This is a better sense of loyalty, because for most people, even 2G iPod and most 3G iPod owners, probably have no plans to buy a new one if they are satisfied. At least, this is my suspicion.
I do feel that this illustrates the basic fact that if you ask the correct survey question, you can get a statistic that makes nearly whatever point you'd like.
Don't forget the new buyers: I've already heard people say "Hey, if I could install Windows on it, then I would be willing to buy a Mac, because then if I didn't like it, I could always switch back."
Note that machine comes with a CD-ROM. The CDRW/DVD drive is an extra $50. The apple is still more expensive, but comes with the mac iLife programs, which are worth the price to many people.
I know I've been spoiled by the ipods interface, but I'm looking at this thing and it appears to have 12 (!) buttons, five of which are two option buttons, and a little selection pad. Is this really necessary? Maybe people have patented having fewer than 12 buttons...
I have a (non-HD) scientific Atlanta box from TWC in manhattan, too, and let me tell you it blows. When I have people over to watch something, it constantly freezes for a few seconds, then starts again. I feel I should apologize to them for the poor quality I am providing as a host! That, and no 30 sec forward skip button, which makes skipping commercials a major chore. I'm thinking about getting an El-Gato Eye-TV on top of it, since the 2-station record option is actually pretty useful.
What are you talking about? 10.1 was free to 10.0 users. Neither 10.2 nor 10.3 would be considered "bug fixes", and Apple still supports 10.2 with security updates. Apple may charge for incremental upgrades (one can debate whether they are incremental or significant), but not for bug fixes.
To be even more picky, the proton is actually made up of an infinite number of virtual particles, and for many processes of interest, it's dominantly collisions of virtual gluons which contribue.
What about all the online CD stores which will ship to your house? What you are saying is that your only option for instant gratification is Apple. I mean, you even have to wait a considerable amount of time for ice (and when I want a lot, for a party, I do drive to the store).
Gravitons are massless (although Kaluza-Klein gravitons are not), so plain gravitons would make bad dark matter as they wouldn't clump and don't redshift appropriately.
Also, to radiate gravitational energy, there has to be matter on the other brane (e.g. dark matter).
I find it funny that you appeal to string theory because you don't like new particles. The thing with string theory is that it predicts a huge number of unseen particles, some of which could be dark matter and accelerons. You can't really take the string theory without new particles.
Whoa there everyone. It's silly to talk about one country winning a world war, I think. The USSR front was key, but similarly, without the western front and the British/American bombardments of German production (not to mention the horrible firebombing of Dresden), German production would have at least been able to sustain the Eastern front to a standstill (probably). That's why it's a world war, after all, many countries are significant. And we're just talking about the European theater here.
But let's do remember:
Vietnam
Algeria
Neither France nor USA should get cocky about winning wars. We have both exhibited such lousy military planning and understanding of the local factors as to involve incredibly powerful militaries into embarassing defeats.
And I'll discuss this more as soon as I install gentoo on my pc.
It does, but the remote alarm clock would have to be set earlier, and the remote job would have to end earlier, for me to use the FM tuner to listen to the shows I wanted to hear.
Ah well, I'll just have to stick to google news I guess...
Forgive my ignorance, but does this mean someone will be able to write a Real plugin for itunes? I wanted to get that airport express to stream music to my living room stereo, but I like listening to NPR streaming which is in realplayer, and I'll need itunes to stream to a remote stereo. Or maybe someone's already written this?
What you do is transfer the encryption key, which is chosen randomly, and periodically. If you see you are being heard, you merely do not transmit the secret information until you know you have sent an undetected key. At least that's the implimentation I've heard about.
You could get perfect security if you did quantum encryption. (The eavesdropper modifies the signal by listening.) Of course, the technology is theoretical, and not likely to be found in a laptop soon. Still, though, interesting that perfect security is possible, even in principle...
I buy stuff from ITMS, but generally stuff that's hard to find. I'm willing to pay a bit extra for unlimited use, just for fear that in 10 (2?) yrs I won't want lossy AACs which don't play on some new device.
Another thing is that it makes it hard for me share songs with friends. I can make a CD, but I can't just send a bunch of mp3s and say try these out (to distinguish from Gnutella-style sharing, I mean people I actually know and am trying to turn on to music they may not know, even though the live 1000 miles from me).
I'd like ITMS to allow me to have a temp authorization account (we have 5 computers allowed now, I mean a sixth) that would allow me to let other people play a track, say, 5 times. I don't know that this is exactly the answer, but my inability to let my friends try out new bands w/o burning a cd (who uses CDs anymore, anyway?) tempers my buying enthusiasm. Something should be done in this respect.
And, of course, this misses the point that having no debt and lots of cash allows tremendous flexibility in acquiring other assets, like software companies. If you're already debt-laden this is much more difficult.
I am 6ft tall and was running to catch a bus with my ipod in my shirt pocket (say 5ft high). From all of my bounding it popped out of my pocket and smacked on the sidewalk. Results: dents. That was over a year and thousands of songs ago. Not that I want to repeat this, but it's tougher than you might think.

No, clearly they'd have production problems.
Except "blur" sounds like "blur" and "blu" sounds like "blue"...

Mods? Hello? Doesn't anyone watch SNL anymore? Sheesh... http://snltranscripts.jt.org/88/88achangebank2.pht ml
Well, to be fair, people have always thought more highly of my research than the clarity of my writing... sorry for giving an ambiguous comment!

My name is Indigo Montoya. You SCOed my OS. Prepare to die.

Ah ha! The whole iMovie 4 thing. I'm using 3. Just like Apple...
I just tried this, but imovie won't play my DRM songs. It will play ordinary ripped songs, but the ITMS are just silence...

No, no, that wasn't a virus, just 10.3.2. (Note to would be flamers - I have a mac and love it!)
