You know, seeing as how this is being paid for, it's no wonder the progress they're making towards endind p2p networking has gone rapidly after RIAA and MPAA started throwing money around, just imagine the results if spam were suddenly copyrighted...
It slices, it dices, you can even cut a tin can with it. I can't remember the last time I saw a 300% boost in system performance without a hardware upgrade. Maybe Ram Doubler back on Mac system 8?
Keap it Simple, Stupid. Everyone out there knows that, and being an auto mechanic for ten years now, I'd hate to have to track down a problem to a fastener that intermitently lost its connection, decided to to losen itself, or over torque itself and break, or strip its threads. This will never work for two reasons, first off, I don't see how it can ever be cost effective, these things can't be cheap. Second is weight, the reason automakers have all been crying about how they're going to switch to 48 volt systems (any day now, riiiiight) is because the weight of the wiring for all of the electronic components in todays cars is piling up, and with thinner wiring they'll save weight, but have to run at higher voltages. Unfortunately they haven't been able to come up with connectors that won't jump an air gap and melt down connector terminals! So even if these things are wirelesss, the added weight on each connector will obviate itself out of existence.
Where I do see these things going is on emissions control equipment to prevent tampering. No more hollowing out catalytic converters (for the morons that do it) and I can see these as being locks on ECU's to prevent them from being chipped or reflashed. It wouldn't be very difficult at all to have the ECU turn on the check engine light if one of these bolts were removed, but then again, it's bad enough chasing down loose connections and loose gas caps, the last thing I want these days is to chase down a loose bolt!
Be fair, maybe this is an honest attempt for Microsoft to clean up its image regarding security. Perhaps we'll see a bit more focus on prevention and faster patch releases in the near future, sort of a two pronged attack. I have no love for Microsoft, and I'm not defending them, but I'm not into kicking a man in the rear while he's trying to zip up his open fly either...
Soichiro Honda was the founder of Honda Motor Cars, way way back. He was passionate about air-cooled engines, and thought that a liquid cooled engine would never be popular. A team of engineers set out on a secret project to build a liquid cooled engine, built it, and invited him to drive it. Mr. Honda drove the test car with the liquid cooled engine on a rainy, cool day. After driving it a bit, he shut the engine off, with the heater fan still on. A little while later he commented "It's still warm" because he was amazed at the way the engine retained heat. This single event swung his opinion on liquid cooling, and no major auto manufacturer produces an air-cooled engine anymore.
I think that what we're going to see a lot more of in the future is liquid cooling on a number of devices, not because they cool far better, or because the high wattage requires something massive like liquid cooling to keep the heat down, but because it's a more stable way of cooling a processor. Heat sinks can only do so much, and be so big, before a liquid cooling setup becomes smaller and cheaper.
Not me brother, my barricade is such a flaming piece of garbage, only another willing to admit to owning one can honestly feel such pain. Mac filtering based on based on who you want to block? Bah!
Do people honestly think revolution anywhere is going to come without violence? I mean yeah an internet cafe' is not exactly the type of place to inspire rage, at least not in me, but anything can become symbolic to the oppressed.
I guess you could, but there are a lot of woods out there, I can understand if you're talking about the woods in your area, but even then I don't see how you'd trigger these sensors. RFID? GPS? Motion sensors are a no-go as deer and bear would both wreak havoc on them, same for heat. And anything you'd be giving these hikers to trigger these sensors would only apply to people smart enough to take them, for the same amount of time and effort of wiring the woods, wouldn't it just be easier to give each hiker a cell phone or a two way radio? For the amount of woods in the US it almost seems like it would be cheaper to give each person a satellite phone. Maybe you could seed the woods with genetically modified trees that can ID the hikers and point wich direction they headed off in...
Geez, I'd hate to think that there'd be one less Saab owner on the road:) In all seriousness though, I don't think these devices are powerful enough to knock out communications in a hospital unless you were in the hospital with it. I sounds like the point of the blocker is to create a swath around yourself of quiet bliss, so unless you walk through your local hospital for kicks, it shouldn't be an issue.
ObviousGuy I couldn't agree more, hardware doesn't attract customers at all, and this is why I hope you will join me in my petition to get Apple to support OSX, along with all preceding and following apps and operating systems, on the Apple// and the original Mac. After all, these machines represented a significant investment in their time that I"m just not willing to write off yet. Hardware doesn't matter a bit, as long as I have a machine to use, why can't the software run on it?

That's what you get for mowing your tree stumps.

Bah... let me know when it can do it in three quarters air. That's when I'll be really impressed...
So eventually I'll be able to compile a wardrobe that will make me tougher than anyone else on the street?
