The point is that walmart is accepting preorders for unrated games, but the article summary fails to point out this crucial point that actually makes the issue a controversy...

Get a life, dude. No one cares how great your shoddy product is compared to OpenOffice. Infighting like the crap your "Story" fosters is exactly the opposite of what the open source industry needs to become mainstream. Why not just say "My office package implemented a grammar checker! Try it out for yourself!"? THat's many times better than "We got the grammar first! OpenOffice su><0rz! W3 B3 1337!"

To be honest, I've already forgotten the name of your office suite, so your ploy to downplay the successes that OpenOffice has already encountered has failed utterly. At least, for me. Why not try creating a community, rather than flaunting your successes like a 3-year-old with a candy bar?

Open your eyes! Sure, here in techno-savvy land it looks like StarOffice has the potential to vreak the monopoly of Microsoft when it comes to document productions, but we have to be honest - millions of people are not going to jump ship just because an open source product all of a sudden had another release. Just the mere idea of switching will likely invalidate the millions of dollars companies spend on Microsoft Premier Support packages. The ubiquity of Microsoft Office is going to be the key factor here.

  6. No, it isn't draconian on Congress Declares War on File Leakers · · Score: 0
I know an individual who gets advance copies of the DVDs of popular movies, so that he can review them for events like the Screen Actors Guild awards, and they are made to sign extensive releases stating something to the effect of "I will not make copies of this". Anyone who does so in those cases is breaking a contract that they signed, and may have a significant impact on the revenues from moviegoers.

Not to mention the illegality of the actions of individuals who take camcorders/digital cameras into theatres. This should obviously be punishable by something more than a fine.

THe problem with the way we deal with crime in America is that we have to work with a deterrent-based system. Right now, the threat of litigation from the R-I-double-Assholes, let alone any of the other myriad organizations that feel that adding "Association of America" lends credibility to their cause, isn't nearly enough of a deterrent for the average computer-savvy college student sitting in a dorm room downloading the latest hits from {insert pop flavor of the moment here}. So, the solution is either to make the current deterrent more prevalent (more litigation, yay!), or to create a harsher deterrent. Since obviously someone in power realized that we shouldn't enhance the litigation-happy society we currently enjoy, they opted for an approach that is actually going to do some good.

Ridiculous. In some areas, unions still have use (like in preventing big companies that focus on Arts of the Electronic variety from treating their employees as slaves), but more often than not they just stifle innovation because it'll cause some poor soul to lose their job.

I believe that while telecommuting is a good idea now, sometime in the future (I'm thinking 60 or so years) it's going to have to be regulated. Most people come home to relax and relieve stress. If they have to come home and continue to encounter all the little annoyances that gets them riled up at work, it can't be anything but bad for their stress, morale, and health. THe higher stress as a result may or may not have an effect on the population, but eventually it will go too far and people will start to do things like have heart attacks at an early age, bringing in government regulation to "Save" the populace after the problem becomes unsolvable.

You obviously will never understand what you are missing out on - energy. Most CD recordings, unless they are done live, don't accurately capturre the energy of a concert. As both a performer and avid concert goer, there's no way to explain the feelings you get from listening to an artist who's catching his stride in the middle of a set.

You're missing out on a very diverse range of experiences if you're closing your mind to the idea of a different experience.

And don't even try to tell me that stuff like Jazz is only audio - that would only serve to undermine your point in a manner that you will never know, as you've never been to a live performance (here's a hint, improvisation isn't always the same thing)
