Er.... At $7.81 per Mb I make it $1.9m (1.1m GBP) for a 80Gb HD at 2006 prices (based on 5% annual inflation for 34 years), although this doesn't include the building to keep it in and the small power station needed to power it (and the aircon).

    Having just lost EVERYTHING -
    A combination of:
    1. A failed hda system disk
    2. Which took out the superblocks (yes, all of them)
    3. Which meant my md0 4x40Gb IDE software raid array wouldn't recover (no superblock)
    4. And the backup on hda went too
I can only say - Raid is good for h/w failures, but ecstasy is a backup volume on an independent device! (preferably located in a different reality where they don't have lightning, flood, fire and children with fizzy drinks)

Typical colonials! Just coz London is the only city in the UK (AFA [USA] K), then that will do. As the previous correspndent pointed out, it is 300 miles between London and Sellafield/Windscale. I'm sure the few USofA ./ers wouldn't mind St. Louis being placed in Chicago? Come on, get it right!

Ah.. no, not re-nationalised yet, I should know http://www.iainellis.com/. But the question is, would anybody notice if it had been / were? Anyway, the industry already uses GPS to tell some trains where they are, so they can open the right doors ('coz the platforms aren't long enough...)
