I do respect your opinion; even though I see no harm in looking for life in another planets, perhaps we should spend more time and effort trying to fix the mess we did in this one first. Perhaps we are just looking for a suitable place to mess up just like we did here, who knows.

It is economically feasible to produce music and videos at home nowadays, and somehow the greedy MAFIAA capitalists doesn't seem to like it much. Don't fool yourself thinking there isn't a strong lobby for petrol and against renewable energy. I am brazilian, and we've had had viable ethanol powered car for more almost years now. But the first time we developed the technology, it was simply left to die under the lobby of our own oil company, since all the research and politics related to ethanol were done from an independent government body. If now you see so much news about brazilian ethanol, it is because it is under the control of our oil company.

I can't be sure if alternative energies can ever be economically viable, but I am sure that established energy related lobbies - perhaps even a nuclear lobby - will try to prevent them becoming so.

all very well, but this is moot since they already used GPL software. And who says the software they needed was available under a BSD license anyway? IMNSHO, Linux grew so much more than BSDs because most developers do not want to see their code being taken and not any giveback from big companies. If so, it is natural there is more (and better - not trolling BSD or the BSD license, due only to the fact that more people opting for the GPL provides a higher chance that good software is developed) GPL software available than BSD.

Perhaps I did not make myself entirely clear, after all, English is not my native language. I wasn't referring to all atheists, in the last paragraph; in fact, I was referring to a certain class of atheists (which I called rabid and fanatical) thoughout the whole post.

That said, I do stand by the concept that even non-fanatical atheists would mod me down simply for criticizing them. It is a kind of groupthink that we see too often here in /., and I meant it was no different from religious fanatics - usually a few people are really fanatic in each religion, but then these somehow manage to overcome the common sense and acceptance of different POV in most of their community - and alas, a so called holy war is born. Basically, people who think they have the right to impose their beliefs and their vision upon others are fanatic no matter whether they are religious or not; and by believing they have this right, they become religious, even being atheists. I see no difference between witch-hunting people that don't believe in God and witch-hunting people that do believe in God.

Besides, your reply doesn't make much sense. If I had you till the second paragraph, how does the third make my whole argument void? That's nonsense. Now, after a few hours, I agree that the final remark looks snide and even trollish. I would probably word it differently now, but for the better or worse /. lacks an edit function.

  12. BS on Bacteria Found Alive In Ice 120,000 Years Old · · Score: 0

You have to have faith in the scientific method. If there is one thing annoy me in rabid atheists is that they usually consider themselves above religious people for lacking faith, when at times they are even more fanatical then some religious zealots.

If you use the scientific method, you believe that the world is logic, and most of the time, deterministic in an Cartesian way. You believe in cause and effect. Most of the time, you believe in energy conservation and isotropy (and temporal isotropy) of the fundamental laws, even if you don't realize that. You obviously believe in independence between the observer and observed subject (which we know not be true, at a quantum level, incidentally).

And these people dare to say they do not have faith. Yes they do. Being slashdot, with a large percentage of atheists, mod me down as you see fit. This proves some atheists are no better and no less fanatical than the worst scientologist. They just choose another religion to be a zealot of.

It is paradoxical. That was my point. I don't want to dig into the matter of whether we should or shouldn't allow it. But from the moment one prevents a democratically elected government to change the constitution and become a tiranny, they themselves are not being democratic anymore.

So, IMNSHO, this proves there is no such a thing a a "right" of the majority, or the rights of the minorities. These rights exists as long as majorities and minorities agree with their existence.

  16. Rights? on YouTube Refuses To Remove Terrorist Videos · · Score: 1

Rights come from force. There is no such a thing as undeniable rights. These so called "rights", from the Constitution, laws, international treaties or anywhere else are fictitious and exist only, and to the extent, that the parts involved agreed on them.

As soon as someone gain enough force, these "rights" might be dissolved. The force can be political, military, economical. But ultimately it all relies on force. I'd quote the coup in Argelia just to prevent a (democratically elected) islam party from taking the government. No major occidental nation, press or organization cared to defend democracy. Democracy is a strange beast that only works while people believe in it.

Heck, I never thought I would effectively quote and use Heinlein's Starship Troopers concepts here in /. . But he got that right. Sometimes, if you believe in democracy, you may have to fight for it in an completely anti-democratic way.

Art Direction has nothing to do with eye-candy; it's about how you do it, not how you overdue it. I bought a PSP due to Patapon, its originality and style got me right on the spot. It has a consistent style throughout the whole game. And , unlike for example what Frank Miller's Spirit seems to do, Patapon doesn't resort to oversaturated, contrasting colors; instead it appeals to subtle gradients. Flow is another example. The point here isn't realism or special effects, but rather the art style. While supersaturated colors aren't necessarily bad, I see where the OP was headed and I tend to agree that Spore's art style has been changing for the worse.

  21. Final Fantasy? on Guillermo del Toro Will Direct "The Hobbit" · · Score: 1

Heck, if Final Fantasy is your definition of "fantasy", no wonder you didn't like Tolkien. Nothing against FF, I enjoy an RPG now and then, but they are quite different matters, really.

Tolkien is about the myth. The mythology surrounding LoTR is utterly complex and deep. Each character and race has a backstory that is nearly fractal, so intricate and developed. Tell me one of "better fantasies" out there which has gone so far as to develop whole new languages to boot.

I understand the poetry might put a lot of potential readers off; and I understand that some people might find that Tolkien sounds like a D&D cookbook (basically because Tolkien inspired most original RPGs). But Tolkien's work is indeed extraordinary, based on complexity alone. I wonder that if sometime in the future they dig a copy of LoTR/Silmarillion, people will indeed believe that around 1900 we had a tale of creation like the one depicted in the books. That is no small feat.
