  1. Incredibly off topic, need help with Yahoo! on Microsoft Sues EU · · Score: -1, Offtopic

I know this is by no means the right forum, but I'm desperate:

After 7 years with Yahoo, they have "deactivated" my account for apparently breaching the terms of service (which I can assure you, I did not do).

Trying to contact Yahoo has gone nowhere, and I'm getting desperate to get my account back. I had endless amount of notes in the notepad, and people address's, etc all entered, the portal setup to show my stocks, everything.

My only guess is that I recently had the unforunate experience of dealing with an obvious scammer. I was rude in my last email, and the next morning, my account is deactivated. I have the whole email chain if anybody is interested, but here is the excerpt:

Dear Seller, I appreciate your response. However, I am ready to buy the item as early as possible. I am currently in US and I need the item for my son who is currently in Nigeria (23402) West Africa doing a research. The unit was stolen and need urget replacement so as not to stop his research.

I am ready to buy the item for $350 because I do not want to loose it. I am making the payment via Bidpay and I will like to know may be you will be able to ship the package as early as the payment must have been confirmed by bidpay.

    Best regards
    Martins

And I replied after a few back and forths:

Unfortunately, shipping to Nigeria will cost close to $2000 (by hot-air baloon).

Perhaps I could ship it first to the US and then you could ship it yourself?

    Sorry for the problems,
    Paul

If anyone can help in any way, I would VERY much appreciate it.

    Thanks,
    Paul

    Me too,
    Google:
    Email (private, personal), Search, Newgroups

    Yahoo:
Email (commercial, signing up for stuff)
My Yahoo (includes: Stocks, Weather, News)
Notes (I use this quite extensively to write out little bits of information I want to remember)
    Full fledged address book

So IMO, Google has a long way to go before I cut Yahoo out, if at all.

  3. But I can't make copys of my CD's/DVD's??? on Canada Says No To DMCA · · Score: 2, Interesting

As much as this _sounds_ good, they're still not giving me what I want:

    First they say:
That is, the circumvention of a TPM applied to copyright material will only be illegal if it is carried out with the objective of infringing copyright.

Then they go on to say:
Circumvention for the purposes of making private copies of sound recordings will not be permitted, however.

I have a cottage, why can't I have a copy of the DVD's I own at my cottage and a copy at my house? Why should I pay twice for this privilege or lug around DVD's all the time?

Same with CD's when they get copy-protection. Does this mean I will not be able to make copys of my CD's?? The current life-span of a CD in my car is less than a year, am I expected to re-buy this simply because I'm not allowed to make personal copys?

    It's bullshit.

Not that I condone pirating, but it is incredibly easy to find a non-black listed XP Serial, and to change it. I don't know the legality of it, but since u technically "own" XP already, I don't see why not.

Right on man, I'm so damn sick of hearing people say "Well, don't do the crime if you don't want to do the time." And other such arguments - the point is to take things relative. It sickens me to think some kid who copys an mp3 could wind up in the same cell as a child mollester, etc... I know, how about we all just make all laws uniform, and when anyone commits a crime, regardless of its nature, we just ship them off to jail for an indefinate period of time! Actually the above would work wonders, eventually there would be nobody left, and the country could be rebuilt the way it was meant to be in the first place.

you'll notice I included a comment from slashdot (the analogy, I quite liked it, and sorry for ripping it off!) I'd also like to mention I got this reply within an hour of writing the email, impressive! I'll post more when the MP writes back (if he does), and it turns out to be intereting. Dear Jim, Thank you for your e-mail to MP Murray Calder regarding copyright levies. Murray shares your concerns on this issue and has written previously to former Industry Minister Allan Rock to express concerns similar to yours. I will pass your e-mail along to him, and expect he will respond to you directly. The Copyright Board operates at arms' length from Parliament, and Parliament doesn't have a say on the setting of levies. Again, I expect Murray will respond to you in greater detail. Best wishes, Richard McGuire, Executive Assistant Office of Murray Calder, M.P. Dufferin-Peel-Wellington-Grey (613) 995-7815, fax: (613) 992-9789 caldem@parl.gc.ca -----Original Message----- From: Jim Whosit [mailto:nospam@ysd.com] Sent: December 12, 2003 12:32 PM To: Calder, Murray - M.P. Subject: Canadian Copy Right Board blank media levy Hello Mr. Calder, I'm a 22 year old consituent living in the Orangeville area, and I've been reading about the recent increases in the copyright levie's that have been slapped on almost all blank storage devices. I do not pirate copy-righted music, however I do rip bought CD's to my computer for use in other players (I-Pod) and backups (since CD's get scratched really easily). The fact that I am paying the music industry this levy, for something I already own, really bothers me. They're now talking about increasing the levie to $.49 per CD which will DOUBLE the price of a pack of CD's. I feel I am being labelled a criminal, or music "pirate" simply for using my bought media how I wish to use it. Therefore, why should I continue to buy my music? As far as I'm concerned, if I'm already paying for being a pirate, then why not do it? I also see they're trying to slap a levie on Internet Service providers. This makes absolutely no sense! It's like saying: You walk into a resturant and order food. You have to pay, as soon as you order, a $50 "broken plates" fee. The fee is non-refundable regardless if you break anything or not. Kinda tempting to actually break something, huh? A levie like this really irks me, and I urge and hope you will consider this matter, as if it does go through, I feel to "get my moneys worth" I will have to start pirating music. btw, why stop at the mucis industry? Movies, TV shows, pornography, and software applications are all being pirated too, why is the music industry favoured? Thank you, Jim

Is there a Canadian equivalent of the RIAA as well? Should I stop downloading off Kazaa? Actually I think in Canada I am allowed to download, as long as I don't share. Haha, suckers!
We do have something equivalent, but we are safe from it for now. You see, whenever you buy recordable media (CD-R, DVD-R, tapes, VHS, memory sticks, and possibly even hard drives if they get there way) a royalty is added to the cost. Therefore, since we're paying compensation anyway, we're allowed to give our friends copys, etc (although this doesn't explicitly give us permission to share on P2P)... Thankfully, we also don't have a DMCA (or any other idiotic acts). Check out this article: http://techcentralstation.com/081803C.html

And I saw that 2 kids (both 17), who walked into a store, and stole $600 worth of merchandise. They were caught, and the paper was reporting their outcome in court. The fine? $600. But if I "steal" a song off Kazaa, I'm going to jail for 5 years (possibly) and paying millions to the RIAA. Tell me that's fair.
