Yeah, I was watching that as well. We don't even know who this guy is or anything about him and Jack Thompson is already out there presenting himself on television as a SCHOOL SHOOTING SPECIALIST, which of course he is NOT. Further, he started to try and tie GTA, Half Life, Counterstrike, violent television and even web based flash games to this shooting spree. With absolutely no evidence or reason to try drawing such a connection at all. And he wasn't almost in tears. He was in tears, because he said "I'm sorry. I'm just looking at my fourteen year old child here".
They've said this guy was in his mid twenties. So if you're a child or a teenager or even in your 20s, violence is the result of movies, television, music and videogames (of course, never RELIGION, huh?). But if the guy was in his 30s and shot up a taco bell or his workplace, jack thompson wouldn't be involved and nobody would even mention videogames or entertainment as a motivation or justification for his actions.
I'm just glad the shooter wasn't clad in black. I remember going through 1999 having to show up on television and radio programs all over the place when I was asked to speak in defense of the goth and geek subcultures, because of course everyone who wore glasses, listened to KMFDM or wore black clothes had to be on the verge of a killing spree; taking out all our precious jocks and little princesses.
Yes, but we fund many forms of social welfare (not just corporate welfare). Other than feeding people, what could be a greater social welfare concern than curing a slew of the greatest sicknesses man has ever known?
Really, our society has advanced to the point where we have the resources to do a lot of great things that will benefit everyone. We just seem to lack the will. And while it's nice to think private industry will do it, they're not going to cure cancer, because a cancer cure won't make them rich. They'll lose money. And even if they simply stumble upon some sort of "prolong your life" drug (you know they don't care to CURE it of course), it won't be for decades.
I was just thinking lastnight. We have spent just shy of one trillion dollars in Iraq and Afghanistan, not even considering the money spent elsewhere to fight supposed terrorism.
In that same time, I wonder how much we have spent on cancer research? I wonder if a trillion dollars in research money right now would find a cure for many of the major cancers (and in turn, surely provide insight for many of the other cancers and other diseases that could be related or benefit from things we learn through curing cancer).
Why don't we put forth the same heroic visionary goal for our entire society that we put for going to the moon forty years ago and "smokin' out ter'ists" these last six years? Not to mention, curing cancer is something we could definitely get other nations involved in so the amount of research and money involved would surely be much greater.
I am just baffled that in 2007 we are so eager to throw our money away on so many ridiculous things and so many unproven things and so many things that only serve to kill or anger other people who will then want to kill us in turn... but if we were to propose spending an enormous amount of money on curing a horrible disease for the betterment of all of mankind for now and forever, you'd be called a Utopian idealist fucking hippy or something.
Personally, I don't even care. Unless it is really great content, I'm not going to waste my time watching any sort of ad before it. I'm tired of them trying to commoditize every god damn thing on the fucking internet.
One thing I hate is that on sites like gamespot, you have to watch an advertisement before you can watch a videogame trailer... which in itself is also an advertisement.
Hopefully this will start to kill internet video. There is nothing more I would enjoy more than seeing all these idiots who think the world wants to watch a 14 year old girl talk about how tough life is for two hours a day from her bedroom or some 70 year old moron singing and dancing suddenly go away.
And while I'm not a coder by trade, I'm pretty sure that code is still written in english, isn't it? I mean, sprintf() is sprintf() no matter where you're writing code? It's not elsprintfo() just because you go south of the border or anything...
I don't know about that. If you already type about 100 wpm or so, how great is Dvorak giong to be for a coder? Are you really going to write code at 300 wpm? I doubt it. And while I suppose it might put less straight on your fingers, a lot of us have absolutely no problem with QWERTY. Not to mention the time involved in re-learning a new layout. And I gaurantee they aren't teaching Dvorak in school.
It's an improvement over QWERTY. Over that I don't think there is any doubt. But I'm not sure the improvement is worth it if what you have is working as it is. Dvorak is mostly just something people can brag about to be different, just like people who buy Zunes and iRivers so they can show how cool and different they are because they didn't buy an iPod.
You have a choice of cell phone carriers. You don't have a choice of internet service providers. You have whoever has a monopoly on your phone service in your region and whoever has a monopoly on your cable service in your region. If you terminate your service early, exactly where are you going to go?!
Fuck this. Just a further attempt to fuck the consumer over.
I don't care what anyone things about global warming - there is no reason NOT to curb pollution and be concerned about it. Even if the 0.0001% of established scientists who disagree with the significant evidence supporting it, all you have to do is drive into LA and look up and try and breath and look off into the distance to understand that there are countless reasons to be concerned with and curb our reckless actions, if we can avoid them in the first place.
Check wherever you bought it from and see if they have one of those "if you find it cheaper in 30 days, we'll refund the difference (especially if it's found cheaper at our same store)" things. A lot of places have them even if they don't advertise it, so it's worth asking.
Can we all just grow up and stop being attached to physical buildings? Who cares if it's "historic"? Push the fucker down and build something useful there. At what point do we not let every square foot be taken over with a building that has some significance to someone in the past but no tangible use in the present? The fact that we're wringing our hands over a tech building rather than sacrificing it to progress is ironic.
Yet they have been a thorn in my side for two years now and there is nothing I can do about it. There's no such thing as anonymity on the internet... Anyone can be found. Knowing who the culprit is offers you nothing unless you have the financial resources to do something about it. It's just like copyright or trademark infringement. The law may be on your side, but the law isn't free. I personally run a business of sorts (non-commercial venture) and while I have material that is copyrighted and I own a trademark, I have no way of defending either of them should the need arise. I presume the original poster is in that boat.
Right. The important thing being interoperability. Simply having a yahoo, AIM and MSN protocol that you can install on your jabber server isn't enough. I don't want to go through the hassle of giving my information to and creating an account for every instant messaging service that someone uses who I need to communicate with. It should be enough that I have a jabber account and AIM and other clients/protocols should automatically be able to identify what protocol I'm on, who I am and how to communicate with me.
Imagine if only Sprint customers could talk to Sprint users, Verizon customers could talk to Verizon customers and Tmobile customers could talk to other Tmobile customers. And if you were a Sprint customer but you wanted to talk to someone who had their plan on Verizon, you had to have both a Sprint and a Verizon account and phone. Ridiculous!
Extortionate? How big do you think the blind market is? Do you expect people to invest significant R&D and then sell solutions at a loss for the good of humanity?
The cost of most attempted solutions to assist with blind living may be high, but I doubt that has nearly as much to do with extortion as it does with simply supply and demand.
I also fail to see how one can call poor planning a form of "disrespect". Or do you think that the city planners are twisting the tips of their upturned moustaches while gleefully giggling over the pending city development plans "Have a tree in the middle of your sidewalk, blind man! Navigate THAT! Tee hee hee hee!"
Please include Yahoo! and MSN in your wishful corporate death list, too. There's nothing worse than some douche who refuses to use anything but MSN or Yahoo! and they're the only asshole out of 200 friends, family and coworkers that use it so you can either never talk to them or sign up and use yet another protocol just for that one mindless bastard.
When you buy an HDTV-READY television, that doesn't mean it will handle HDTV. You still have to buy more hardware to convert the signal. So by VISTA READY, I think one can construe that you still need to buy additional RAM, among other things.:)
Kind of like the "E-SECURE" tag you find on sites supposedly establishing that they are trustworthy and yadda yadda. All it really means is that they've paid the $25,000 licensing fee to include it.
Who really paid attention to the window logo program anyway?
Since they decided that's what they wanted to be called. Just like someone who sells crab grass to cure a runny nose wants to be considered a doctor. So apparently any time you don't want to tell the authorities something that someone else told you, all you have to do is say "but I'm a blogger!".
So, they kept him locked up in contempt until his senses caught up with his fat ego. I would suggest they do the same to all the other bloggers who think that they're Walter Fucking Cronkite, just because they have a textarea box in their browser that they spew their oh-so-unique thoughts into.
For the longest time, we were all force fed the myth that money had nothing to do with outsourcing and that it was simply due to some non-existent lack of skilled American employees.
And really, even if that were the case, doesn't capitalism demand that you pay those employees what the demand is worth rather than stabbing them in the back and going elsewhere or importing tens of thousands?
Yeah, I was watching that as well. You could pack this in certain places on your body prior to incarceration to automatically prevent unwanted insertions.
I don't know, but I'm sure we can find a creationist to tell us.
Because QWERTY is optimized for non-english . . ?
And while I'm not a coder by trade, I'm pretty sure that code is still written in english, isn't it? I mean, sprintf() is sprintf() no matter where you're writing code? It's not elsprintfo() just because you go south of the border or anything...

That's because she was a pirate.

Imperfect? Speak for yourself. You're one of the 5xxx UID models. I am part of the much improved 6xxx line. Far superior in every way. :D

Good. Then everyone will finally move to jabber.

Think of VISTA READY as HDTV-READY.
