It appears GPL is regarded very lightly in some part of the world, while it has presence in the US (except some part of Utah). If Kiss can get away with their GPL violation, others may follow. For fairness to all members involved, however, the information regarding to given donation has to be available to all members. Otherwise only a few close to the source *can* take advantage. If contributors' only motivation becomes donation money, this mentality may distort the look of open source in general. Open Source exists to produce better programs, alternative to commonly used low quality software that was written only to make money.

Donation is rewards to their work, not salary. That said, IMO SourceForge's program will help projects to survive and offer what the contributors deserve.

Also, new 8x recorders are coming.
Also, new double-layer recorders are coming.
    The target is constantly moving...

As far as the next generation high capacity DVD format is concerned, Blue-ray is currently under development, headed by Sony, Matsushita(panasonic) and phillips. Meanwhile, (oh what a surprise) there is another high-cap DVD standard using blue-laser technology, headed by Toshiba and NEC. It is called HD-DVD and it stores 5 times more data than current DVD+/-Rs can hold. Needless to say they are incompatible to one another.

while neither of new DVD standards is available in the market yet, it is a matter of time that they will replace the current standards. Then again, we will face incompatibility issues between Blue-Ray and HD DVD. Competition is good, but consumers have got enough of those with VHS/Beta, LaserDisc/Videodisc, Win/Mac, yada yada yada.

Despite its hype and promises, DVD+R may live a short life (maybe 10 years) IMO.

Let's face it, even if you can carry a monitor around, you will still need keyboard and mouse (or good hand writing recognition) to input. I think the reason tablet PCs are having tough time in the market (except for package carriers) is that people are so used to using conventional input devices. Some people prefer to have keyboard even on PDAs. On the other side, there are a lot of laptops that are smaller, more powerful and capable than the smart LCD.

I tried to come up with a senario where a wireless LCD become essential, and I couldn't think of one. It is neither as small as PDAs (and remember PDAs nowadays are powerful), nor as capable as a laptop. History tells that this kind of in-between products rarely make success in the market.

Great! Now I can make good use out of "Progra~1" folder and "Docume~1" folder in the FAT partition of my HDD. I can still save files with long names like "Paris Hilton video (this is real).wmv" in ext3 or raiser.

If kids need computer skills, high school may be a good starting point. Unless you are teaching 5th graders command lines to admin Unix machines, becoming a "computer literate" won't take much time. That's what GUI's are for. Computers in grade schools are not used to teach real "languages," programming in C++ or Java. The article mentions some negative consequences from using PowerPoint-like program, which ironically restricts children from creating what they want.

Applications are designed in a way which even dummies can use them. But at the same time, as long as you have only a keyboard and monitor to interact with a computer, there are restrictions on what a computer can do. Lindows is selling commercial OS which *happen* to be based on OSS and/or free software. Also consider the fact that thanks to the billioneire-turned-entrepreneur, Lindows has enough budget to promote their products.

personally I have no craving for a half-ass freePC. Would Debian-based Lindows be successful (not commercially, but as an OS) as it is now without OSS/free software? I doubt it. donating MS settlement $$$ to keep OpenSource and free software movement alive is not a bad idea, imo.
