Portable Document Format files are designed to be printed not just read on the screen. I use PDFs a lot in my work (I'm an ESL teacher and author of English textbooks). They are definately not a scourge. They are a God-send.
Get a light a fast PDF viewer (I use Preview on my Mac at home and the built in Gnome PDF viewer on my PC at work) and print out the documents that you need to read again and again.
I keep the PDFs around for text searching and printing just the pages I want. Try that with a continueous "all-on-one-page" format.
>For example, when filling out my address on webforms, not a dialog, I know, but same behavior, I'd tab in to the >"State" field and hit the "N" key until it came to "New York". Not on a Mac.
Try typing "New" instead of hitting "N" until "New York" comes up. Works on my Mac.
Although I thought that the grandparent had a good idea, especially for people who have a hard time getting started, I must admit that you have a better point.
Use the free-flowing ideas as a pre-writing technique. If a student is staring at a blank screen, then they should do some more planning.
Brainstorm, write an outline or organize the ideas in your head.
Editing a paper is very important, and it will be easier to clean up the ideas if you don't have to clean up a ton of grammar and spelling errors first.
Yeah, like how I just tested Ask.com with a search that I did early today at Google (latex chapter). The first result was a sponser hocking erection aids. No thanks Ask.com, I do not want spam in my mail or in my searches.
You can borrow e-books at the Örebro Public Library (Sweden). The previous link shows a page where you can view e-books, listen to audiobooks (ljudböcker) or download MP3s of classical music from such companies as Naxos.
I find this hard to believe (but not impossible to believe). My iBook had its logic board blow right when I was working on a book and had a deadline coming up. It was the only computer (still is) that I had. So when I asked Apple if I could rent a replacement computer, they sent me one for free!
Free shipping on the bad iBook. Free replacement computer.
Fink has LaTeX. "fink install tetex" (or something like that) should work. However, I found i-Installer's installation better than Fink's. I haven't used FInk's tetex for sometime now.
For all of you admins that hate when Lawyer X or Dentist Y brings a brand new Dell laptop with XP Home Edition onto your network. How would you react to Teacher ZZZAlpha who brings an iBook or Designer XXX who brings a Powerbook with Tiger?
I'm just curious.
We have XP Prof. with Active Directory logins at our school, but I (Teacher ZZZAlpha) often bring my iBook in with me to play MP3s, audiobooks, or show Simpsons episodes that are not out on DVD (I'm a teacher, so I can't afford an iPod). I can login to the shared directories fine. The admin doesn't care, although he's not in a hurry to get the print server to allow me to print.
Don't forgot the you can buy whole albums with 10-25 (maybe more) songs for the same price. I have bought several iTMS albums with more than 20 songs for 90 SEK. One classical CD from Naxos was only 56 SEK.
All are free to vote for whomever; however, do you really believe that your dully elected congress person votes with your interests or the lobby groups' interests?
Drugstores in America are a lot different from the state-run apothicaires in Europe (I assume that you are not from N. America--I mention Europe, because that is all I have experience with). They are more like a convient discount store that happens to fill your prescriptions. They'll even develop film for you.
Scribus is a killer layout program for Linux. It is slowly coming to Mac OS X (last time I checked the Native -- i.e., no X11 -- version was in Alpha).
After install Word Services, you can count the words in highlighted text in any program with services (e.g., Safari). Just click on the name of the application, slide down to Services and select Statistics.
I teach English at a private school in Sweden. The former IT guy (I never met him) installed a bunch of unlicensed software (MS-SQL server, Windows 2003 Server, etc.) while saying that they were licensed. Then after he was laid off (or maybe quit -- I don't know the details), he called the Anti-pirat byrå and ratted on the school.
Even with a good lawyer's help, we still ended up paying a large some of money.

Nothing is stopping you from plugging in an USB keyboard.

PS. I'm an ESL teacher and a professional writer.
Those charts can be useful cheat sheets for non-native speakers of English. I teach writing (and general ESL) in Sweden, and grammar is a problem.

I like to LaTeXify PG e-texts. I use many for my English classes. I give the students the option to read on the screen or print out the texts.
All this is free.

Would Dell do that?

There's the code for a quarter note C major scale. Super fast input.
iTunes MS deducts purchases a couple of days later off of my VISA debit/bank card. ;-)
[Yes, I know what you're talking about. I'm just pointing out one other type of iTMS purchase alternative to CCs.]
I'm just curious.

You must not listen to jazz or classical music. I do, so I buy a good number of albums from iTunes.

Or get more pockets. ;-)
The best time to buy a song with a chance of winning is during these slow times.

Currently I use LaTeX for documents and Lilypond for music.

Dang! I want Lotus Improv and WordPerfect for NextStep on my Mac!
