    I can get the source code for the code in RHEL that is covered under the GPL and compile it and give it away to anyone I want. Red Hat cannot stop me from doing that. I can install it on as many machines as I want. Red Hat cannot stop me.

    And if I want to give away those security patches to everyone, Red Hat cannot stop me.

    You really need to read the GPL.

    All Red Hat can do is to not support any machines that I have not paid them to support.

    You don't like the way Marx defined Capitalism. So don't use his definition. Put forth your own.

    Take the time and clarify where Marx was wrong and why his characteristics are not related to Capitalism.

    The easiest way to solve a problem is to define what that problem is.

    Why waste time complaining that someone else's definition is wrong and that their definition means you cannot discuss the problem?

    By your logic, if I build my own distribution of Linux, I can put whatever restrictions I want on it.

    Which violates the license that the software was released to me under.

    I have offered a different interpretation. That Red Hat is licensing support and that if you want support on those systems, you have to pay Red Hat.

    The GPL does not allow anyone to place further restrictions on code released under the GPL, even if that company collects the code (aggregation) and compiles it (binaries) and puts its own trademark on the box.

    It is prudent for you to avoid that battle because you would spend money finding that you are wrong. You can install GPL code on as many machines as you want without paying Red Hat any money.

    But you will not get any support from Red Hat until you pay for it.

    Admit that Capitalism has problems and what those problems are.

    Then find ways of dealing with those problems.

    Why would you let someone else define terms for you? You can call it "freedom" or "slavery", but that only appeals to those who like to restrict their mental processes to black and white and good and evil.

While the US is busy dumping $1 billion per week into Iraq, China is busy building its internal markets. America already has record-breaking deficits. Check the Chinese economy. Then check how the Soviet Union finally fell. They went broke. Just as it seems that we are trying to do.

The initial number of Installed Systems is the number of copies of the Software that Customer purchases.

    They want you to pay for each box that they are providing support for.
    You can install it upon as many boxes as you want. But they won't support it. The initial support costs are part of the initial purchase price of the software. You buy one copy of software, you get support for one system.

    Sorry, I don't put much faith in someone's claims about their own virtues. Our government and military has lied to us enough in the past. And those lies are documented.

    But I'm sure you believe that they wouldn't lie this time.

    Check out the US military installations. They are also surrounded by neighbors.

    During the Iraq invasion, there was only one theocratic zealot who was threatening to use his nukes and gas. That was George Bush.

    There are very few terrorists in the world. But by killing civilians, we create more.

    And that just feeds your persecution complex.

    There weren't any nukes in Iraq. Therefore, there weren't any nukes that Iraq could have given to terrorists. Therefore, New York, London and Paris were not in any danger of "theocratic zealots" using a nuke from Iraq.

    But our troops in Iraq are in danger from "terrorists" now. Except that those "terrorists" are viewed as "freedom fighters" by the Iraqis. Because they are fighting to drive out the foreign invaders.

    Look up "paranoid" sometime.

    If you had bought 98 more, they would not have had any problems. They would have run for 5 years, just like the IBM drives.

    But you wouldn't buy any more because your initial experience with them was bad. Therefore, to you, they will appear to have a 100% failure rate. Despite what their actual failure rate might be.

    This is why people who do not understand things like MTBF or statistics believe that going with Cisco is the better choice, even if it costs more.

    Which is one of the reasons that Linux is spreading so fast on servers and embeded devices.

    It's all about blame and expectations.

    People expect Cisco to be good. After all, it's Cisco. They've been making good stuff for years. So when something goes wrong, it's an anomaly.

    On the other hand, when the new router from the new company that they've never heard of before has a problem, that's 100% failure to them.

    Suppose you have 100 machines with 100 IBM hard drives and they've been working for 5 years and 2 drives crash hard today.

    You wouldn't get a bad opinion of IBM hard drives from that.

    Now, suppose you swap in two drives from some company you've never heard of before and BOTH those drives crash hard within 48 hours.

    Would you ever buy another from that company?

    Not if you're the average person.

    Despite the fact that IBM and that company might have the exact same failure rate on their drives.

    That's why it is so important for new companies to spend money on customer relationships. Quickly exchange hardware while charging LESS for the equipment than the established companies. Which means you have lower profits.

    Next year, I'll be giving a lecture about the new book I wrote about being on the lecture circuit promoting the last book I wrote and how painful the lecture circuit was.

    The book after that will be about how I found myself addicted to the lecture circuit despite the pain.

    If I am talking and you are writing, I am superior. Think old time boss and secretary. Boss talks, secretary takes dictation.

    Dominance games are usually the worst means of communicating anything other than who is dominant.

    Suppose a person who has an emotional need
    to establish dominance over others also likes tech toys? There are lots of these people. They buy the latest toy just because it is the latest toy. They have an emotional need to have something before other people have it.

    But those toys don't give them the dominance feedback that they also need. They play with their toys and the discover there is something missing that the toys aren't providing.

    Get therapy. Find out why you want the newest toys. Find out why using them makes you feel "isolated" and "alone".

    I'll send email to someone sitting right next to me. But only if I think he's busy on a project and wouldn't like to be interrupted or if I can more clearly express myself in an email (or to cover my ass by having a digital record).

    This isn't about technology. This is about people interacting with other people.

    As long as companies like Quicken are willing to PAY for "leads", there will be a market.

    Simply put, spam pays. It's easy money for very little effort. There are no risks. And you can work from home.

    Its multi-processor support is way behind everyone elses. You might as well just run single processor.

    Virtual memory sucks, too. But then, virtual memory sucks most of the time.

    As you've noted, ring 0 is fast. But any module can take out the entire server. ARCServe is notable for doing this fairly frequently.

    Now the good things. It uses DOS to load itself. This might sound bad, but it makes troubleshooting a problem very easy.

    Also, everything is a module. You can find the exact module that is causing the problem. You can make sure that module does not load. This gives NetWare its amazing uptime.
