there's a difference between taking for credit and just going to the lectures.
but in my experience, at a uni where marks are weighted by class average, the hardest courses were often easy to get good marks in so long as you did a little work. similarly the easy courses can lead to disappointing marks if you make a random silly mistake where everyone else doesn't.
now I'm doing a PhD, I mostly see students as lazy bastards who I have to babysit for labs.
if domain squattig is bad, why not trademark squatting?
if there's one thing that's more annoying than the whole patent/trademark/copyright mess, it's the sleazy companies that try peddling their 2nd rate rip-offs on the back of confusion. c.f. "buy g3n3ric v1a.g.ara.!!!!!"
if I search for car insurance, I expect ads from car insurance companies.
if I search for a specific brand, all the other brands saying "me too" piss me off. when searching for an official accessory, I don't want to see the million third-party companies selling shoddy rip-offs.
just like in the USA, the tax you pay for your vehicle depends on mass. SUVs qualify for "lorry" status, but that would mean inconveniencing SUV users a bit which is the last thing the US wants to do. so they don't make the SUV owners pay accroding to mass like everyone else.
whereas the US, the actual number 1 spamming country, is doing so much isn't it?
but China is far away isn't it? the US passing the CAN-SPAM act was just a random fluke, China isn't stomping out spam because THEY ARE EEEEEVVVVVIIILLLL!!!!1*
*if they do do something, they are anti-free speech, anti-business EEEEEEVVVVVVIIIILLLL!!!!!!111 commie scum.
when companies resort to actively making things difficult for customers it often spells the beginning of the end. or at least the destruction of any brand loyalty.
I for one do not watch TV any more. I get my favourite shows (of which there are less than 5) via file sharing. imo TV isn't worth the effort. before the screams of piracy come in, I buy a lot of TV on DVD but that's usually released at least a year after broadcast.
>I'm running an AMD 3400 with 1 gig of memory and a 7200rpm drive. >If my machine is too slow then there's a problem. Alternatively you're a moron jumping to conclusions.
yeah I have AMD 2000+, 512MB PC2100, 80GB 5400rpm, ATI 9500pro. zero problems.
you, like many others, assume that all criminals are psychos and will stop at nothing to commit a crime.
that is bullshit. a large ammount of crime is opprtunistic. if you leave your window open, they'll climb in. if you close it, they might smash it IF the house is empty and secluded. but it's not an arms race. if you install CCTV and alarms, they don't come back dressed in black with night vision goggles and a set of expensive tools to disable your security, they just go next door to the guy who HAS left his window open.
your argument about retaining control despite legal problems is like saying "we shouldn't have license plates. if it turns out I'm driving a stolen car, I should still be able to drive it regardless. if I pay for something then it's MINE, legally sold or otherwise". (hint: you should not be able to buy HL2 yet, only "pre-order")
as far as copy protection methods go it's actually very good.
no limit on number of computers you can install, no need for CD in drive. in fact, no need for CDs at all - if you were away from home and on a computer with a decent internet connection, you could log into your account and play it there.
so it's good because whereas all other copy protections are just about making things shit, this one actually has some benefits for the legitimate user.
the only problem with it is that Vivendi are a bunch of twats (like all distributers are) and will piss of customers and sue their clients before accepting the fact they don't deserve profits from a game they didn't make sold via a method they weren't involved with.
depends. in measurements your error is usualy not defined by float precision. there are many things we still can't measure accurately. admitting that and giving justifiable error bars makes you a better scientist than trying to claim better accuracy and getting smacked down by peer review. an example is the value of the magnetic field in a coronal loop measured to be 13 +/- 9 G.
agreed. TV is just boring. the only good thing is news and bbc.co.uk has that covered. anything else that's decent can be bought on DVD and watched when you want.
the benefit/cost of TV has been plummeting sharply for some time now.
copyright isn't about recording, it's about copying. anyone can record (pretty much) anything. copyright just means you can't go distributing it.
you make a tit of yourself singing while pissed at a wedding and I record it with my camera. what the fuck does the SCoTUS care? I start selling copies without your permission then you might have a case.
it's an entirely hypothetical situation merely inspired by the article, not based on it.
plus, with global warming/environment change we'll be fucked within 100 years let alone 500, except for those who are already being fucked rigt now by hurricanes etc.
ignore this cunt. he's just an ad-click generator. don't visit his POS website.

ymmv.
there would be an exemption for SUVs.
just like in the USA, the tax you pay for your vehicle depends on mass. SUVs qualify for "lorry" status, but that would mean inconveniencing SUV users a bit which is the last thing the US wants to do. so they don't make the SUV owners pay accroding to mass like everyone else.
yeah, except it's a couple of years too late.
.mobi TLD?
.mobi sites will be flash-based adverts for the latest deals on phones.
these days it's about getting ANY page to work on a mobile. WAP was useless, but my mobile can browse any text+image+simple javascript website.
if people followed standards like XHTML then it would be a lot easier to browse things on simple browsers.
but people haven't bothered with standards so far, so what makes you think they'll start now there's a

I block google ads.
if someone goes to the effort of ignoring ads, working around their measures is more likely to piss them off than get their business.

fuck no! I'm downloading HL:Source at 4MB/s!
HL2 rules.

the fact Douglas Adams himself worked on a version of the script seems to suggest otherwise.

simply existing in a universe filled with cosmic rays leads to carcinogenic effects.
if people stopped to consider risks, we'd still be living in caves and dying by the age of 20.
short term risks lead to long term security.
...a great disturbance in the force... as if a million geeks shouted with joy...and then realised there's still a month to wait.
>what if DVD's go away and you are only "allowed" to watch DRM'd discs or downloads on a "per viewing" fee structure
then I don't watch. the same benefit/cost analysis applies. making things difficult for me == making me not bother with it.

the point is that hydrogen can be made by any power source whereas petrol can only be made from oil.
also preventing inner-city pollution is a huge bonus.
the best hope for the future is nuclear power now and solar/wind/wave etc. being used more and more in the future.
