    I want good drivers for my hardware. open source would be nice but I'll be very happy with fully supported binaries.

    let the ignorant fools have their Windows. if they don't care about getting the best then let them buy their 256MB-Intel-WinXP machines from Dell. see if I care.

    my uni has the ingenious system of assigning everyone a 5-letter username that is their email address. they also assign your name to the same account.

    this 5-letter system means I inherited all the spamming from whoever had the code before me. everyone has it quite bad anyway with it being such a perfect system for spammers, but mine is especially bad: aaaaa-zzzzz@my_uni.ac.uk - some don't work but guaranteed to reach every member of the uni. if you're a clever spammer who likes to be efficient you may also realise the first 2 letters stand for the departments.

    this is also the uni with retard computer admins who refuse any kind of spam-filtering.

    er, yes they do actually. it's a requirement for study at my uni at least.

    (next lame argument: "no-one's forcing you to get an education...")

    it's also a requirement for many other things that aren't gun-to-head-forced but neither do they actually truely require email anyway e.g. buying things online.

    my uni is pathetic and refuses to implement any kind of anti-spam at all just so they can't be held accountable for anything.

    force them to sort it out. and if they can't fix it then get rid of it. something will fill the void and either way the problem is solved.

    imagine one which has a plan of the entire parking lot (one floor only if multistorey) and you push your spot to pay. saves the (minor) hassle (in UK) for those where you get a sticker and have to take it back to your car and put it in the dash.

    combined with a CCTV (improved security) it also means that if you run out of money license plate read so a fine can be charged (payable upon return or higher fine if later through post).

    reading plates also allows for tracking of stolen vehicles.

    I give you... the parking meter that saves the world!

    (coming up... privacy fundamentalists who shriek in horror and demand to be anonymous at all times no matter what)

    that gave me a thought: what would happen if terrorists took out MS HQ?

    what would be the financial impact relative to 9/11?

    also if a lot of MS staff were killed, could Windows continue to function? would the government have to step in, nationalise and release patches for the sake of stability?

    MS would certainly be an easier target than the more obvious Pentagon/White House type.

    the ozone hole is not closing. its size varies depending on the time of year, so yes at certain times it is getting smaller.

    but then 6 months later it gets bigger again, and when it does IT BECOMES EVEN LARGER THAN IT WAS THE PREVIOUS YEAR.

    a similar argument would be to go to the beach when the tide is going out and cry that the oceans are draining away and we need to melt the icecaps to fix it!
