    not just the simple ones either. Google is the first thing my PhD (astrophysics) supervisor tries for info.

    I use Firefox so with the integrated Google searching it's often quicker to just type a company name into Google than to guess whether it's .com or .co or hyphenated etc. I don't think MS can compete with this, they just have too much bloat. you can't get any simpler than Google, but there are millions of ways MS can screw it up, so statistically speaking their failure is practically guaranteed.

    er, spam IS illegal, as are associated crimes of fraud, hacking etc. plus I suspect the online pill-sellers probably break health and safety laws.

    I don't care about lack of censorship.

    I'd love Google to start "punishing" sites:

    Your page has text almost the same colour as the background? -1000 points for you! (or whatever's large enough to push them to the bottom).

    something to stop all this BS that's only there to fool people.

    plus, official sites should almost always be at the top, If it isn't then whoever's at the top is probably scamming.

    I don't understand how your bomb example is supposed to work since bomb isn't an explicit word and I was talking about explicit words. whatever your intentions are, you shouldn't be saying "fuck" to children.

    if you just walk up to someone at an airport and say you work with bombs, that's the same "asking for trouble" attitude as shouting fire in the theatre.

    AFAIK no. YOU only updates installed packages, and doesn't do things like new KDE version (although KDE etc. are on the suse website)

    I would imagine if they don't pay then in the eyes of the EU they are a criminal organisation with no right to trade, and any company trying to sell MS stuff would also be punished.

    they're breaking the law, so think of them just like the mafia (though not the same specific laws involved). would it make sense for the EU to allow the mafia to trade in the EU just because they have no EU HQ?

    bah! I've been with SuSE since 6.4 :-)

    I'm really happy about this. I've been waiting for 9.1 for ages (didn't bother with 9.0). IMO SuSE is by far the best distribution so I've never minded paying for the boxes.

    you have to reboot Windows to install Office. In fact, if you install all the programs (Office 2000 Premium) you have to reboot THREE times.

    the beauty of Perl is that it's very flexible. of course you *can* write massively obsfuscated code, but that's like saying linux is crap because the admin can fuck everything up with rm -rf.

    if you want, you could write Perl code that reads just like English (with the exception of regular expressions, but they're so powerful it's worth it).

    I started using Crossover recently. since it has the options to "simulate" reboots instead of the real Windows ones, and it can download and apply patches directly from setup rather than having to go through Office Update, I reckon it's better on linux than Windows.

    but Acrobat Reader sucks on Windows too, especially the latest one (6) which takes twice as long to load (cf 5), offers no improvments, adds some new buttons to make the interface more cluttered, and displays a list of 100 patents while loading to piss me off.

    plus I hate programs that force useless things on me. is there a way to make the "My eBooks" directory fuck off?
