    yes I did. because the disk was mounted the CD tray was locked, and since there were no icons there was no way to unmount except for opening a console and doing it manually (which wouldn't be at all obvious to a new linux user) or rebooting (completely unacceptable).

    I've tried beta 2 so the following is simply The Truth, but doesn't mean I won't be modded Troll:

    I hate the way Mandrake makes KDE look disgusting whereas SUSE makes it look beautiful, and also functional as opposed to Mandrake's default usless patterns around all the windows.

    I couldn't find any links to my drives on the desktop or elsewhere, and so was unable to get the CD out (not counting rebooting or command-line unmounting which are both unacceptable for a modern OS aimed at the public).

    the configuration panel seemed nice but very slow and several of the options would cause a crash and the system wouldn't even restart.

    so back to SUSE 8.2 for me until the next version with KDE 3.2 comes out.

    it's okay for free software to be provided "as-is" without guarantee.

    it's a completely different story when commercial software is advertised and sold for a specific purpose but then says in the mandatory agreement that you mustn't have any expectations that it works at all.

    software licenses say that the software isn't guaranteed to be fit for anything at all, not even the purpose it's advertised for.

    and that's one of the reasons why they don't deserve to have their products protected by patents (even if software patents weren't a horrible idea anyway)

    at least "real" products are covered by the Sale of Goods Act (UK) etc. to guarantee a certain level of quality - you give a little, you get a little.

    usually the point of a pizza delivery is that someone comes up to you and hands you a pizza soon after placing your order.

    at that point, you can pay with cash just as easily as you can at the restaurant, but without the risk of being seen on CCTV cameras or mugged en route.

    I hate installers, the fact I can just unzip and go with Firebird is great. it can be used on computers without needing admin priviledges and in linux it avoids the problem that installing ANYTHING that didn't come on the CD can be a pain for someone who just wants to USE linux, not LEARN linux.

    what's the point of an installation except to mess up the registry and dump a load of unwanted problem-causing files in non-obvious places?

    also, unzipping into new directories means being able to have several versions at once, and yet settings etc. are tranferred over fine.

    plus it's quicker.

    yes they are. it's like the "free internet access" thing that was finally banned.

    no-one expects unlimited to refer to time because "always on" is now a standard feature of practically all ISPs, just like "no *access* charge" was/is.

    imagine if they advertised "24/7" access then you found out you could only use it for 3.4 hours a month i.e. 24 divided by 7.

    imagine if a bank advertised a credit card as "interest free" then it turned out they applied 50% interest a month but didn't charge you a service fee for calculating how much that comes to.

    advertisement standards aren't about what you can argue, but what is reasonable for the customer to expect.

    it doesn't work like that. because you get paid so much per hour, doesn't mean you're creating that much good/services for the company. who's to say if you weren't wasting time on a virus you'd be wasting time on something else? it happens all the time. what if the help desk didn't need to deal with the virus and it was quiet and they just sat there? you'd be losing even more money because you're paying them to do nothing at all!!!1111

    you're using the same kind of maths as the RIAA - that because someone downloaded a single track to see what it's like, they've lost money equal to the store price of the entire album. it simply isn't true.

    I like Linux and OSS.
    I'm glad that SCO got DDOS'd, they're bastards and deserve it.
    There's nothing wrong with this imo.

    What I think IS a problem, is you trying to make it seem like OSS is one big community where everyone has the same opinions and they all move in the same direction.

    I should be able to say "fuck SCO" all day long and it have nothing to do with the fact I use OSS. but then you start making it seem that liking OSS is some kind of religion that governs all my actions.

    I use Linux cos it has the tools I need. I use Firebird because it's a fantastic browser. I say "fuck SCO" cos they're full of BS. Get over it.
