There are paintball mods for games such as ghost recon. One game I used to really enjoy is Nerf Arena. I believe it used the Unreal Tournament engine and was released shortly before Unreal Tournament. So, the graphics might be slightly dated but it is still a very fun game to play. A wide assortment of nerf guns combined with bright and very original levels adds up to a great first person shooter. Its great for kids and adults. Believe me on this one, I enjoyed Soldier of Fortune 1 and 2, and I still loved this game.

Since they are out of cash, I'm guessing they will liscence Fallout to another company to make the MMORPG. I don't have to tell anyone here that the MMORPG market is over saturated right now. Even if the game is a success we all know they are looking at 4+ years of development which would translate into just another money drain for them -- not what they need right now. An up-front liscence fee from a big company like EA could be the cash injection the company needs. I'm just suprised their whole company hasn't been gobbled up yet.

This is the same problem porn site operators are having, except with credit card "charge backs" rather than Paypal. It is my understanding this is part of the reason American Express doesn't accept porn sites.

Speaking of porn and paypal, you need to be very careful who you accept and/or send payments. A large number of accounts have been frozen (along with all the money in them) because someone was discovered to have some link to the porn industry. I'm not talking about someone running a porn site and using paypal to accept payments, but, for example, a adult webmaster/web designer accepting payment from someone who runs an adult site.

I know people who use paypal for their mainstream businesses and speak very highly of paypal. On the other hand, I know tons of people who have had problems.

Bottom line, someone who can implement a digital payment system better than Paypal and credit cards which is safer for the buyer and seller is going to make the fucking bank, big time.

If these guys in California are really concerned about privacy, why not mandate that *all* e-mail leaving and entering California much be encrypted with PGP?

Google has got a pretty good idea with Gmail. Whether or not California "allows" them to execute this plan doesn't matter. Even without a roadblock like this for Google, some other company will create a Gmail clone in no time. (maybe they'll be in India or China -- let them have all the tax revenue if California doesn't want it)

I don't understand who these legistlators are trying to appease. Privacy advocates? There are far more *real* privacy issues that are more important than this. We used to joke about how slow the government has been to react to new technology, whether its p2p, VoIP, or whatever. Well now the tables are flipped. I find this "pre-emptive" legislation very disturbing. Are we going to live in a future where not only is any idea someone thought of off the top of their head patentable but will people make ideas illegal before the idea is even put into reality? Hmm.. this sounds like it might be dangerous, lets ban it before someone trys it. Maybe they should pass a law making a warp drive and tractor beam tax.

I have a little secret for politicians. You want a better economy and a happier population? You don't need to cut taxes, you don't need to pass new laws. What you need is to go back and get rid of old ones. When you run out of ideas think creating laws about things that don't exist yet is a good idea how about you go back and wipe some of the b.s. laws off the books instead.

Just my two cents. I haven't posted much to /. lately, I hope this makes up for it.

I know many online games prevent selling ingame items in their TOS. It would be interesting to see the ramifications if There actively tried to prevent this currency exchange.

Call me a nerd, but I find this extremely interesting. In some respects, the economics of the virtual world are the same as the real world, but in others they are dramatically different. For example, the game creators can pump an infinate supply of currency into the system (kind of like the fed to pay their deficits), and inflation can actually occur. On the other hand, they can create an infinate number of X items.

Here is the interesting twist -- to make players happy do you give them everything they want? The last virtual world I inhabited was managed (for a while) by people who thought appeasing the in-world citizins by making rare items infinately available again was a good idea.

Any slashdot reader knows this isn't a good idea. We play games so that we can get X sword in Diablo II, and when we are at level 99 whats next? Do we really play to win, or do we play to play? "Unwinnable" MMORPGs tell us we play to play. That being said -- do you think twice when you buy a lottery ticket?

I know in the real world we actually *need* to work to eat, but its just a thought.
