    KDE / Gnome, basically.

Fortunatly, while they are "the default" Linux interface now, you still have choice of many other lightweight environments.

It was not a feeling towards Bin Laden. Heck, I didn't even remembered to hear that name until after that.

And as for choosing someone like him to be your role model?

As for vi, well, you can remap keys. Not only in vi, but in X also. (I use caps lock as escape on my traditional keyboard.)

I saw many comments stating that they should not write down the password on any file, etc. Seems that nobody here nor on Ubuntu has any clue..

First of all, the password shouldn't be read with normal stdin. The 'passwd' program reads the password in a more direct way, not allowing it to be redirected anyware. Just try "ls | head -3 | passwd" and you will see it does not work.

The installation should use it to enter the passwords, so that it will not even know what the password is, let alone writing it on a log file.

There are many cases where a company pay you to write Free software. Not all software is for selling. Many times the company need the software as a tool, and doesn't mind others to be able to use it too. I myself have been paid to write Free software some times. For example, to fix a bug in a Free software that the company uses. The patch is then sent back to the software project.

    Great post overall.

For example, I have Java 1.3, 1.4 and 1.5(5) all installed. Mono, GTK, Gnome libraries and similar things should also go in this place. If I need an app that needs the gnoem 2.12 libraries, I should be able to install them alongside the 2.10 libraries, but in a clean, modular way that can avoid dll hell.

Sounds good. The dinamic linker should be able to find and use the correct versioned files for the libraries, and gcc should be able to find the versioned include files/dirs too.
