  4. Re:Where's the lock then? on Apple Switching to Intel · · Score: 1

MacOS X86 will most likely still run only on Macs, and all macs will have BIOS magic that the install discs will look for. I'm sure there will be hundreds of people trying to hack the installer to allow you to install on your XP box, but then there's no guarantee of driver support for whatever hardware components you have (and thus no guarantees of the benefits of the total apple package in regards to stability, etc).

PPC is *not* the reason most people buy Macs; Mac OS X and the overall user experience is. Apple has a knack for making great looking hardware that is paired with easy to use, just as good looking (in most people's opinion) software. They sell the computer as a whole package, as a whole experience. At least 90% of Mac users have little to no idea/ knowledge of what kind of processor they have in their macs, and they just don't care either way. They just want the machine to do what they want it to do, mainly music/ movies/ dvd/ connect to their ipods.

I think this is going to be huge for Apple; Now, people will be able to buy apple products, and if they want, install windows (or *nix) on the machines alongside MacOS X (I believe there is mention by Apple's VP that they won't stop people from installing windows on the new macs if they want to). I'm a windows developer by day, but I use my Powerbook at all other times (daily browsing/ email/ music machine), except for the occasional PC game. Now I can buy a new Powerbook, and a new PowerMac when they go X86 and dual boot. Bam, just like that, I've bought more Apple hardware than I ever would have before, as before I would have needed/ wanted a PC for home-based PC/ windows development and gaming. Now with Apple/Intel (Aptel? Mactel?) I can have both a desktop and portable that fulfills my needs for Mac OS X as much as I want, and Windows when I need it. I am sure I am not alone, and that there are many switchers out there who would want nothing more to buy Apple, but need Windows for one thing or another.

  5. Re:Hmmm... billg said it was impossible on The Scoop on the Xbox 360's Embedded OS? · · Score: 1

Billg said it was impossible to strip down windows into components (the arguments were centered mostly at the application level - IE, etc) to be used on a PC. One of the problems he was talking about was that, for example, many first and third party applications use the Internet Explorer html control (mshtml.dll, among others) and are nowadays expecting it to be there. Now that these applications are out in the open, MS has an obligation to keep the IE control in the OS.

The Xbox OS is probably supported by the core Xbox team, and not the windows team, as it's at least two generations derived from the windows 2000 kernel that it came from. But don't worry, that still leaves all the branches that you had mentioned, plus a few more for tabletPC (which is just winXP), current service pack changes, etc. Actually, last I recall, the windows trunk was massive, and had many, many smaller branches that are managed by individual project/ feature teams (think a smaller company's whole source tree, complete with nightly builds of their own), who make damn sure that their code works in their team-specific branches before merging up to the main windows trunk.

  7. Re:How any game could be backward compatible on Xbox 360 Backwards Compatible? · · Score: 2, Interesting

Actually, I learned at an MS infomational talk back when the Xbox came out that all Xbox games have the entire OS on the game disc, and that is used to load up when the game is inserted in the drive. It's a lot like inserting an OS install disc in your computer and having it boot into the installer (or something like knoppix where it just boots into the OS). Your proposed solution works ok, until you think about how there are hundreds (thousands?) of Xbox titles out there, and each one would need updated libraries/ exes. Telling all your third party devs that they need to go back and create new exes is a LOT to ask. I think you're right on in that the 360 will detect the disc difference, but I'd have to imagine that there's some sort of VirtualPC-type emulation magic going on under the hood, rather than having an online library of all the updated exes ready for download. The 360 should have more than enough horsepower to emulate the original xbox, and MS did buy VirtualPC, arguably the best PC/ Windows emulator for the Mac platform, which is very similar to the 360 from an architecture standpoint.

As you are in that local market (supposedly), you should get the local channels, which should have some games, and you should also get the Regional Sports Network for that area. Again, if it's not on the local channels, and not on the regional sports network (or blacked out), odds are no one else in the local area, sat or not, are getting these games. can't fault DTV for that.

in regards to the home media option, yes this is a sore spot. I will admit that i would love to have this feature, but then again, no other sat/ cable providers offer this, with the exception of a few small beta tests (mostly in California) for Digeo's Moxi platform.

As for the HD content, sorry to hear you jumped off the dtv wagon. Bravo HD was added about a week ago, and word on the street is that TNT-HD, and inHD1 and 2 (HD PPV) will follow soon, not to mention ESPN2 HD in January. Not counting the Voom-only/ exclusive HD channels, DTV carries or will carry soon, just about every available HD channel out there (plus 100 NFL games this season via Sunday Ticket), so you can't really blame them for a lack of HD content. The big stuff comes next summer - HD locals to the top 50 or so markets (Minneapolis-St. Paul is #14 on the DMA list, so you'd be almost guaranteed to see HD locals next summer) with the rest of the locals being added in 2007.

And on the TiVo side, you find that you feel oblgated to watch stuff that tivo records and that you enjoy? Isn't that the point/ benefit of the TiVo, rather than an issue?
