it surely will be a large undertaking due to the fact that it's written entirely in Objective C and Cocca. Unfortunately this means a complete re-write will be needed
It appears that you for one are against getting ourselves entangled with foreign affairs
I'm not opposed to foreign affairs as such. I'm opposed to the surrender of our national sovereignty and independence of action (as well as the surrender of state sovereignty, but that's another matter). I believe in having as much localized government as possible. The broader your governmental scope, the fewer places you have to hide from bad laws.
And by the way I don't think abiding by international treaties relating to human rights and whatnot really entangles us with other countries, by the time we get there we're already in too deep.
I do think we are in too deep. I want us to act humanely (which, by the way, we seem to be doing a knock-out job of over in Iraq) but I think we need to do it without giving up our God-granted national liberty to an illegitimate ruling body.
This is not only for the U.S. I want national sovereignty for other countries as well. I don't want Europe to copy our stupid patent and copyright laws that we've mired ourselves in.
And you don't think anything's changed since 1796, not least America's standing in the world?
Yes, things have changed--for the worse. I'm arguing for a return to our older policy of sovereignty and independence. All we can gain by internationalism is sacrifice of our freedom and rights to the socialists who care nothing for our needs.
For your personal edification, a few words from George Washington's farewell address, 1796:
The great rule of conduct for us in regard to foreign nations is in extending our commercial relations, to have with them as little political connection as possible. So far as we have already formed engagements, let them be fulfilled with perfect good faith. Here let us stop. Europe has a set of primary interests which to us have none; or a very remote relation. Hence she must be engaged in frequent controversies, the causes of which are essentially foreign to our concerns. Hence, therefore, it must be unwise in us to implicate ourselves by artificial ties in the ordinary vicissitudes of her politics, or the ordinary combinations and collisions of her friendships or enmities.
Our detached and distant situation invites and enables us to pursue a different course. If we remain one people under an efficient government, the period is not far off when we may defy material injury from external annoyance; when we may take such an attitude as will cause the neutrality we may at any time resolve upon to be scrupulously respected; when belligerent nations, under the impossibility of making acquisitions upon us, will not lightly hazard the giving us provocation; when we may choose peace or war, as our interest, guided by justice, shall counsel.
Why forego the advantages of so peculiar a situation? Why quit our own to stand upon foreign ground? Why, by interweaving our destiny with that of any part of Europe, entangle our peace and prosperity in the toils of European ambition, rivalship, interest, humor or caprice?
It is our true policy to steer clear of permanent alliances with any portion of the foreign world; so far, I mean, as we are now at liberty to do it; for let me not be understood as capable of patronizing infidelity to existing engagements. I hold the maxim no less applicable to public than to private affairs, that honesty is always the best policy. I repeat it, therefore, let those engagements be observed in their genuine sense. But, in my opinion, it is unnecessary and would be unwise to extend them.
Taking care always to keep ourselves by suitable establishments on a respectable defensive posture, we may safely trust to temporary alliances for extraordinary emergencies.
Damn, and I can't even blame Bush or Ashcroft for this one.;-)
Heh, sure you can. Surely you should know that Bush can be blamed for everything.
Napoleon? Bush's fault. Alexander the Great? Bush's fault. Hitler? Bush's fault. Does your tea taste bad? Bush's fault. Bush is Satan, the prince of darkness, lord of the flies, responsible for all evil or discomfort in the world.
Y'know, CNN should be paying me for this. I'm at least twice as effective as their reporters.:-)
...go down to the book store and rip up all the inane sci-fi novels about AI. And I would applaud them. Maybe we could get them to burn down Hollywood too.
Geeks enjoy working with UNIX and Linux (Objective-C and OpenStep, in my case) for architectural, ethical, and intellectual reasons; and NOT with Microsoft "technologies". Since what business-people want drives the market--and since that almost always means Microsoft--people are disgusted with it.
Or as the Wonderful Wizard of Woz put it: "I think that the anti-Microsoft sentiment is simply due to their having been so successful selling a lot of crap."
Hardly old--I'm 24. But yeah, I got it. When do we start seeing references to Barney Miller and Sanford & Son? TV these days is nowhere near as good as those two series.

They take the real acronym (FAQMSTCP) and turn it into FAST.
Yeah, maybe Afghanistan will be a good place for a vacation.
Yep, sounds dumb. You got any better ideas for what they could use for industry?
Germans were more militaristic? Totalitarianism was far more popular? How do you measure this?
Because I've read diaries and autobiographies of people who were there and who were involved in the political atmosphere of the day. Paternalism was the order of the day. In fact, the German industrial leaders put Hitler in power in the first place because they thought he would be easy to control.
If you kick out Hussein "and his oligarchy" without a sense of the future, you'll get exactly what happened in Afghanistan in the eighties and nineties.
Isn't that what I just said?
The US financed Bin Laden to fight against the government, in the following power vacuum the incredibly reactionary Taliban assumes control.
I'm aware of this, thank you. Except bin Laden wasn't fighting against "the government". He was fighting the Soviets.
He didn't use those exact words, no. But when you say you took the *INITIATIVE* in *CREATING* the Internet, it means almost the same thing. Initiative implies taking the lead in something. I hopefully don't have to tell you what "creating" implies.
It's not quite as stupid as saying, "I invented the Internet!" but it's damn close.
Bill Waterson was having similar arguments with his distributers, as I recall. He had very high standards for his art and layout--all of which was ignored by the newspapers who ran his stuff.
today's media about what it is to be God-Fearing and Rifle-Toting
Funny you should say that. Only this afternoon, I was trying to determine which country to move to since I'm about ready to abandon the U.S. to all the far-left Marxists that seem to be growing exponentially. I fear for my sanity at times.:-)
Same here. I thought to myself, "What the hell do pheromones have to do with text-to-speech synthesis? Those guys at IBM research have finally lost their minds."
Yeah, but then they'd have to change their business model. God knows, we don't want to put them to any trouble. Their heads might explode.
Nope. GNUstep.
The GNUstep project is a portable implementation of the Cocoa APIs.
Well, we can always port it to GNUstep. It's difficult though--it's much easier to go from GNUstep to Cocoa.

Nah, they don't believe in violence. :-)

Wow, I didn't know there was a suit about this. Makes sense though, it was a really flaky design.
Elsewhere in this discussion, people have said that Canon does exactly this. So it does indeed appear that there is an alternative.
I hear the older flat-loaders (LaserJet III, for example) are extremely reliable and will last for aeons.
Not to worry--there are plenty of Slashdotters that can help you. And I'm sure they will. :-)

Objective-C programmers care about Apple. Unfortunately, nobody givees a damn about Objective-C programmers.

Yeah, when I saw that, I thought it was about to be an advertisement for a 1-900 phone sex service.
