Crackers are very used to dealing with binary-only resources. That's where all the 'glory' in their community comes from. Using the source would probably be considered cheating.
That was what I thought at first too. But if they were *really* playing Yes for their employees, do you think this guy would be complaining as much as he is?:-)
Yep. Back when I was doing the training, I often wondered how some of it could possibly apply to RL. I mean, say I'm standing around minding my own business when some guy decides to make trouble. How am I supposed to kick him in the head without stopping to do 15 minutes of stretching first? I'm certain that pulling my groin isn't going to be a good defensive tactic....
Let me know, and I'll contribute to your defense fund. Heck, maybe I'll even organize a local protest. Man this is great--it's just like the 60s, but we're even LESS mainstream.:-)
Do you read through the Makefiles? I don't. I don't think most other people do either. I generally don't bother checking the checksums either. That's dumb, but people (myself included) are generally lazy.
I understand that alpha is far superior, but the question that begs asking is why does'nt everyone go to alpha, especially considering the raw speed that can be achieved?
Well, the people who can greatly benefit from Alpha AND can afford to buy them in quantities (scientific research institutions and CG render farms) *do* buy Alpha. But it's almost a maxim: the sexier the application, the less of a sustainable market there is. If you want to succeed in the computer industry you have to aim at boring sectors like secretaries who want a simple word processor.
Just to help your mood a little bit, I agree with you completely. Microsoft is on top for several reasons. Some of them are insignificant to this discussion. But the one you raise is very important: Microsoft understands what their consumer base (corporations) want. And what do they want? Why, to use computers for basic but important office tasks! That, combined with the momentum of the computer software industry, is what keeps them on top.
It's nice to craft your software for artists or the education market or even for the server market (and companies like Apple and Sun have done an OK job at these things). But what really keeps Microsoft flying high is that they cater to the biggest (but definitely NOT the sexiest) market: office workers and secretaries. If you want to beat them, you MUST play on that field.
Yes, they use Mach. But they didn't take their code base from GNU. They got their codebase from NeXT who got it from Carnegie Mellon University. And, yes, I'm a NeXT zealot who is deeply offended by all the people who think that OS X comes from Apple.:-)
Not only that, but the member corporations in the *AAs consistently SCREW the artists! Studio musicians get paid peanuts while record label execs rake in the dough. Then they have the gall to say that they do what they do "to protect the artists." What a bunch of slimeballs.
Really, I don't think it's just the easier to use thing. They've also convinced people that Windows has "won the war" and that you won't have any applications or tech support if you go anywhere else. That's more important, I think.
Marijuana is illegal because of DuPont, more or less, and it stays illegal because of the poverty industry; Selling it puts money into the hands of minorities and the poor, which the government doesn't want because it wants to keep those people in poverty
But you're forgetting all the drug addicts who BECOME POOR from their habit. All drugs do is put a LOT of money into the hands of people who don't respect the law.
What's on your Intranet? I mean, is it stuff that relates to your job (like looking up product information for a customer)? I guess that could be pretty useful.
OK. This is cool and all. But, what I really want to see is a FPS that can interface with combat flight simulators, tank simulators, and a strategy module to simulate a complete online war. When is iD gonna do something like that instead of just pumping out Yet Another 3D Shooter?
Because you don't "own" a copyright. Intellectual Property is a misnomer. If you owned it, then yes, it's yours forever. But the Constitution clearly doesn't intend for Copyright to last forever.
They don't HAVE to be swayed by petitions. The Constitution actually says "limited times". Together with the letters of Jefferson, it becomes obvious that what's happening now is NOT what they meant.

Really low power usage IS useful. But not enough people care for Intel or AMD to put a lot of effort into it.
Can I tag along and make it a class action suit? I'd like to get a cluster of Alphas....

To wit, who should I despise more? Rupert Murdoch? Or the French?

Nope, sorry to burst your bubble.
Why not give her me? I'm single and I'm cuddly.
You're right--I was thinking more of Cocaine et al.

You can also say that Linux is an operating system and that X, Apache, sh-utils, etc. are applications (or you could call them an "Environment").

Well, as the saying goes: "You've got questions, we've got blank stares."

Both. You know, the way it used to be?
I agree 100%. Where can I download my Linux version of IE? Or my OPENSTEP/Mach 4.2 version?
