    We're talking about two different things. I was talking about OS-level issues, like drivers, kernel configuration, and installation; you're talking about application issues, like GUI design.

    As for interface, [insert nipple cliche here]. And as for the masses out there who can't even figure out Windows, what make you think that anything will help them? They don't even read/understand the "well-written" fluff the professional tech writers put out, nor do they understand the *obviously* intuitive, professionally-designed GUI! Some people need and deserve specialized training in order to use anything.

    You're just stereotyping Open Source. Any developer can have the feel for an interface, independent of license.

    And all of the above must be possible WITHOUT the user EVER seeing a command line, and without ever hearing or reading the word "compile."

    All software comes from source. The point of open source is not to be rid of things like pre-compiled binaries and manual driver loading, but to be allowed to compile and be hackish if desired. It says nothing about automation, which ought to be left up to the distros to control (I guess; who else?).

    BTW: 'Tis very silly why you are foed. You recently displayed a less-than-positive attitude (via a subject and link) towards a certain subculture, implying that all members of that subculture are sex fiends. You might have been joking, but you might not have. So, were you?

    Apparently you missed the entire "free (as in beer)" reference there. I'm not drunk.

    Besides, I currently don't feel that strongly about the subject of charging for drivers for hardware I don't use anymore.

    If I hadn't been joking, I wouldn't have gone after Linuxant, but Conexant instead, and the entire notion of the winmodem. So there!

    I can't really change the system very much and most of my programs are too minimalistic lacking reasonable options or simply making things that much harder to understand.

    Which is why open source and open standards matter so much. You want to change it---add or remove features? Go ahead. You want a program/module to work just as well with the rest of your programs/modules? No problem!

    Netcraft confirms it: Pinball is dying.

    But seriously, pinball is the greatest arcade game: a well-made table can entertain forever. It is non-linear, unlike so many arcade games. It has a simple learning curve and is fairly intuitive, so anyone can play. It is also (almost?) always family-friendly so, once again, anyone can play.

    There are a couple of things I don't like about current pinball trends: 1) most arcades charge more than they have been previously; of course, it's the same with everything in the arcade now; and 2) while I do appreciate finese, most of the flippers today are gravely underpowered.

    I'm glad that I'm going to get WiFi hardware very soon, so I won't have to use my modem for my laptop anymore. I won't pay; I'll just hold on to the old beta drivers which, despite what Linuxant says, are of good quality. Hell, I'd rather keep a 2.4 kernel around and boot that to use the modem.

    Of course, we mustn't blame Linuxant for being forced to "play the money game."

    Why do we still persist with nuclear, oil, coal, with all the attendant problems (pollution, wars over oil, etc), when we could cover a small proportiion of the deserts of the world with solar cells, and the roofs of our buildings, and the coasts with huge offsiore wind farms & tidal turbines, and have all the power we need?

    Because: 1) Where's the big money in all that? 2) The "Not in my backyard!" Problem, and 3) (at least for tidal power) More research, AFAIK, needs to be done on the effects of doing such a thing.

    You're right. You shouldn't use us for such advice. You should listen to us for advice on code issues. And based on this advice, we can tell you that SCO is full of crap.

    I also respect your right to believe in salvation through corporation. It's just that most of us here do not.

    Also, if you have a gargantuan trying to kill you---one who has a history of obliterating competition through less-than-licit means---such as Microsoft, you'd be paranoid, scared, and hateful too! After all, we're just humans.
