We might want to try stipulating that the corporations that lease the spectrum be required to provide campaign advertisements for elected officials free, that way we stop selling out our government for the privilege of elected officials advertising on public property. Just saying, might be an idea to try putting in the contract.
we should MOVE cape canaveral to the moon and stockpile fuel there for eventual missions to all of the other interesting bodies of the solar system. We should not spend money GOING anywhere unless we plan on creating a colony there. A joy ride simply isn't worth the money.
Why is the concern here C02? From my perspective the move from Oil is paramount. We need to become self-sufficient in our energy production in order to stabilize our economy and withdraw our troops from overseas. Our global temperature has only been FAIRLY stable for 11,000 years. Global warming is a good thing because the normal state of affairs for our planet for the last 600,000 years has been an ice age please review long-term scientific data such as this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_core and stop depending on climate models based off of the last few hundred years which are basically meaningless in the long term. The area I live at right now was under a mile of ice 14,000 years ago. Global warming is a very good thing compared to a global ice age. Our current warm period is already nearing it's termination phase and the greatest threat to human existence is the arrival of a new ice age. IF natural gas can domesticate our energy supply while providing a warming blanket over our perpetually cold planet then that is fantastic. Preserving a climate regime that is only 11,000 years old is shortsighted.
I am going out tomorrow with data I downloaded off of google earth that actually was able to show the dent of a 12" corrugated metal pipe daylighting into a steam bed. I guess it's cool they are doing the whole planet but that resolution is basically useless. A program like the national map for the United states, but on a global scale where local governments (say norway) each fly planes over their territory and map the ground surface using lidar would be much better. I guess it's nice to have a 40 ft resolution map of myanmar..... Who would purchase this data? If you are in the US go to www.seamless.us.gov for high resolution imagery and use autodesk map or civil 3d to import google earth surfaces right now for better resolution than this. Much better resolution is already freely available for any area of consequence.
lunar mining: Cheapest way to build a moonbase. Just keep tunneling and put several seals to keep air in. There is no point in going to the moon, or anywhere else, if we don't have a cheap mining unit to get resources and build a base. Otherwise it' was a wasted trip. Powerful electric propulsion and fission power plant: Excellent way to overcome the limits of of carrying fuel up the gravity well all of the time. Great way to re-use the ship you build out of it from mars so you can get a ferry going every few weeks. I'm not going to keep the lovefest going for the other ones, but I definitely think this is a change for the better.
Climate change is an ongoing fact of life since our planet was founded. The fact that climate change is debatable is a rather idiotic sign of our times. That being said, the current snow fall in america is most likely due to el nino. Like the mid nineties. From my memory, we also had more snow in the seventies in the northeast than we have had this winter. I remember 4' in front of my house as a kid in '77
CLIMATE CHANGE WILL OCCUR. WE MAY AFFECT IT, BUT THE EARTH IS NOT A MUSEUM AND THE ONLY CONSTANT IN LIFE IS CHANGE.
The additional $15 is only for corporate accounts which apple also charges. You can use your personal account to access your work e-mail without the additional charge.
A self-suffiicient moon colony is our first step towards ensuring our survival in case of an environmental catastrophe on earth. To me, this goal would be most efficiently advanced by an autonomous excavation device that could dig us a moon colony that by being underground would effiiciently protect us against cosmic rays. The design of this colony could be further refined after stage 1 colonization to make it self - sufficient. Placing this colony in an area of the moon just over the border of the sunlit area would teach us how to extrapolate this type of colony to the deeper reaches of the solar system, but if a hydro rich area could be found on the side of the moon facing the earth the safety advantage of that location would be more important for us to start a colony. In short a device that could efficiently bore out underground rooms for humanity on the moon is absolutely necessary for us to colonize not only the moon but most other bodies in the solar system. This project should receive a high priority in the funding equation.
Increases in population of both animals and humans before 1850 would have contributed to greenhouse gases, and I was making a point, I never stated that the rise in greenhouse gases due to industrialization were the sole cause of the reversal of the cooling. The salient point in the statement was that the earth WAS cooling.
My concern with opening up vast areas of the north were for the human species, not individuals, in the long run coastal cities are unimportant. The sea has destroyed many of them in the past. Inexpensive water purification is well within our reach technologically right now. All we have to do is boil saltwater directly from the ocean into a condenser using focused solar energy from several parobolic mirrors applied through a conductive medium.
Are you so sure of your knowledge of the climate that you can say that a large increase in greenhouse gases is not needed to stop an upcoming ice age?
What abot the new phase change memory? I know it's not mainstream right now but phase change memory has the potential to become a better way to archive. Anyone have data on it's longevity?
If you look at this graph of a long-term data from ice cores:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Vostok-ice-core-petit.png
I am sure a lot of people have seen this graph. It seems that the normal state of affairs for our planet is an ice age. The increase in our greenhouse gases has REVERSED a centuries long cooling trend that over the centuries forced the vikings to abandon greenland, which 1000 years ago was warmer than it is today. Has anyone considered the idea that the greenhouse effect may help us avoid the next ice age? The vostok data above points to the fact that our position in the climate cycle is at the end of a short warm period. Global warming will open up vast areas of canada, siberia, and perhaps antarctica for human settlement. This larger temperate area would greatly offset the loss of land area due to rising sea waters. Technology and advances in water purification may allow areas affected by desertification to be reclaimed. Climate change is coming, our earth has never had and never will have a stable climate. The quest is what type of climate change do we want?
Sometimes it is of value to just push the stone a few feet forward for humanity. This man enables other people to advance their science and correct errors. Could there be any more valuable endeavor. I salute my friend.
I'm confused but it seems like the entire purpose of this video is to prevent a global run on banks by hackers because HACKERS are the enemy. This is pretty unnerving considering we just had a global financial crash and dissolution of bank confidence that was not due to hackers. Why no government video about unscrupulous investment bankers?
this is reminiscent of old propaganda and is quite disturbing
I watched a documentary on hulu over the weekend that detailed how the viking settlements in greenland had to be abandoned because the climate was warmer than it is today.
Also, of you look at the vostok and other ice core samples it is possible that we need to dramatically increase atmosphere C02 in order to prevent the next ice age which could occur anywhere from next century to a maximum of 12,000 years from now.
Science is not today nor at any time in the past been settled.
Global warming beats the hell out of global cooling. There is a lot of room in canada, russia, greenland and antarctica for those at the tropics to migrate. I would hate to see what would happen if our short inter-glacial ended soon and everyone in the temperate areas had to migrate south.
The heavy lift rocket used by the military is already designed and tested, the safety record should be available. It is considered good enough for top secret use. The shuttle boosters have also been similarly used for years and do not suffer from the heat insulation problem that the re-usable portion does. There is no reason for us to design a new heavy lift rocket. This mission could easily be done cheaper, faster, and I would argue safer by using already designed and tested hardware. It should not take us 20 years to do what it took us 10 years to do in the sixties. I am not arguing the fact that the budget should be increased for NASA, I def. think it should, but there is no reason we cannot do it with the current budget if forced to.
These guys have one ready now, no fission needed.
http://hyperionpowergeneration.com/
I have also heard that the US Military already has a heavy lift rocket that is currently in operation and is very safe.
We could also modify the current rockets used to boost the shuttle into orbit to take lunar module up.
BUT NO!! LET'S START FROM SCRATCH, BREAK THE BUDGET RE-DESIGNING THE WHEEL AND TAKE TWENTY FIVE YEARS TO GET THERE INSTEAD OF THE TEN IT TOOK US IN THE 60'S
I have freinds and family in the nsa. your phones have always been tapped and they always will be tapped. All of your bank records have always been available. Get over it. nothing new has occurred int the past 20 years. spend your time pressuring your congressman for responsible use of the information by legislation specifying allowable use of procured data.
I grew weary of most non-multiplayer games ages ago, and recently switched back to enemy territory from newer games due to the ability to have more players on the same server. For me it is efficiency (speed of game) largest team size, and the ability for gamers to rapidly develop new boards to ensure novelty. Graphics is an issue, but even a old game like enemy territory's graphics are good enough as long as the other prerequisites are met. Even when I play strategy games I tend to play games that randomly produce their own environments. Repeating storylines or boards over and over again just isn't fun. I can't wait for a few years when users can easily produce high resolution environments at a whim.
If I absolutely had to get information into iran via satellite I would do it this way:
create a system that broadcasts via satellite into iran a set of websites / tv stations / misc. news outlets that is reflective of demand for news in iran.
The request side of this system could be composed of:
continuously rotating proxies (freenet?)
ip dns requests via shortwave
ip dns requests via satellite
ip dns requests via cellphone
ip dns requests via point to point transmission to afghanistan / persin gulf where possible
There would have to be designed a software suite capable of amalgamating various sources of demand for news from various sources that could be dynamic.
The satellite would then broadcast the information most in demand from the people within iran.
with the prohibitive cost of satellites it might be more pragmatic to float high altitude balloons over the persian gulf that contained satellite type broadcast equipment, or better yet more common wireless internet technology that would be harder to trace via equipment purchases or by having a frakking dish on your roof. A dynamic set of locations for receiving point to point wireless transmissions from the persion gulf (cantenna anyone) with requests coming from sources within iran would work. It would be like old school satellite where the dns request was sent out via modem, but the transmission was received via more capable wireless transmission.
Would it be possible to get a second network card (usb for laptop) share the internet connection and then use openvpn on the computer you are sharing the connection with to encrypt all data coming to and from that computer? Is there a way to hide the shared connection? T
Try not to attach an infrared camera to it and a automatic machine gun on the bottom. Also, make sure you don't have omnibot running. Definitely make sure you don't interface the infrared camera data to the input stream of an omnibot running under a simulation of an enemy territory server. The worst way to keep this aloft for a long time would be to use a balloon instead of an airplane. Otherwise you might create a terminator, or one hell of a gun turret for your secret base if it was mounted on a pole instead of a UAV.
Can someone please describe to me the process of converting biomass to electricity? Do they simply mean burning it? Is there processing required?
WHAT EXACTLY IS BIOELECTRICITY? There is no explanation in the article.
The bottom line is that it is not a bad place for a spaceport. Less than a 1,000 miles to the population centers of pakistan / new delhi. If the taliban can be pacified a rail line could be built. On the soviet rail transportation system. All they need to do is flood the nearby tarim basin with fresh water to moderate the climate of central asia and provide for a nice resort area. The cleanup of the chinese nuclear test site there might add cost, but what the hell!! Think of all the tourists in from Phaze World.
Instead of using electrolysis and other fancy chemical reactions why not use direct application of solar energy? I was told by a professor that the focusing of solar energy using a fully parabolic mirror of sufficient size would generate enough heat to split the water atoms into their hydrogen / oxygen components. Does anybody have any additional information on this? Could you then coax the oxygen atoms into O2 and help restore the ozone layer? If this statement is true then GOLLY that would be great.

Most new engineering software requires more ram than a 32 bit xp install can provide.
