Pixar seems to like them, as do lots of cgi companies. One of the biggest strengths for this box/boxs for them is the video processing. You can make a fancy beowulf cluster for cheaper at the same power, but the best video your gonna get is a geforce gts/voodoo5/raedon whatever this mamajamma has 4 gig of video ram available *drool*. Not to mention the pretty boxes it comes in. I'd feel kinda odd as an astronaut walking by 512 beige boxes hooked to the satalite sitting on a metal rack :)

Is there any limit to how many of these could be used per object, or on our atmosphere at one time? Or have them rolled up waiting to be used incase of solar array failure? Oooh a BeoTether cluster to power ISS :) And if this becomes feasible/popular is there any limit to how many can be used at once on the atmosphere?

For OEM sales probably not that much of a difference. Especially considering this is a new card, and a decent one at that so they'll probably be a shortage of them retail for awhile.

I may be reading it wrong, but I thought it was mainly about them not giving demo's to people who advertise for 3dfx. The reviews they don't mind, but one of the letters that was posted said they told a site to remove the ads for 3dfx or they wouldn't get anymore demos. Still not ethical but not as bad :)

  18. Re:I don't buy it... on Apple Punishes ATI For Leaking The Cube? · · Score: 1

You're correct I was just pointing out that apple really didn't hurt ati. As its been said many times over they just didn't show off ati's card at there show. He's was implying ati would loose its oem work for apple. Which I really doubt considering the strength of this card. I can't say for sure but it would seem this card would keep much of its power even without the expensive ddr ram it comes with on the high end. It uses different methods to get the work to/from ram that are much less dependant on the actual ram speed then nVidias are. While 5.5 ns ddr ram does help it ALOT I'd rather have a normal sdram raedon, then a geforce gts with ddr (if they were even made). And that leads to more power for less money in oem situations.

  19. Re:I don't buy it... on Apple Punishes ATI For Leaking The Cube? · · Score: 1

But if notice, they aren't going outside of ati. Just a different ati card. They will still be making a profit, probably more then off the new flashy raedon, that has lots or R&D to be paid off with high retail sales. Granted the oem would bring in lots of money, but the higher profit margin of an older chip, thats just sitting aroudn anyways can pay for it to, perhaps even better.

Wouldn't this be more of a punishment for mac users?

I mean really, leaving more of the video cards in ATI's hands, and since it is a fairly good card they will probably sell them anyways so it won't hurt them to much in the long run. And then the poor user who gets crappy video card instead of one that competes with the Geforce GTS, and the voodoo 5500. I don't see ati being the looser here.

It sounds more like Apple realised they would have to charge more than they thought for the cube, then decided to "punish" ati by using a less expensive card so their profit margin is higher then with the Raedon, or the box would be affordablely *cough cough* priced.
