Why are so many of you worried about emergency communication? If you were really concerned you would get ham radios and learn how to use radio nets. During Katrina I was sending and receiving messages and in some cases even directly talking to my relatives in the affected area over the 20 and 60 meter bands. Land lines are not good in emergencies, they are pretty much a waste of copper and a hold over from the days before fiber. We use it because its there, we use it because there are no install costs, when the install costs of fiber come down, copper and POTS will go the way of the BBS. Some people may still use them, and they are novelty, but they waste time when compared to the new technology. We should embrace progress. Also one more note, The vo-coders are the problem with the cellphones, the land line is still digital its just got a higher quality vo-coder. Soon we will have more cellphone bandwidth and we can use more pipe per call for voice, we just have to demand better sound quality in our phones and let our dollars speak. If we keep buying mediocre products there is no incentive to change them.
This (working to launching rockets from baloons) has been done in the US for quite some time. There are plenty of student baloon payload systems and in fact this week there is a confrence going this week on adressing just this topic. As far as using baloons as a launch platform, there is group from Huntsville AL http://chapters.nss.org/al/HAL5/HALO/that has been launching for quite some time. Good luck to the team from the UK but if any one realy interested in getting things done, perhaps all these individual groups should join forces.

Under that train of thought, why a person should have to obscure something in order for it to be ilegal to monitor it. Tresspass is ilegal weather or not you put a lock on your door, the meer fact that it is your property is enough to warent the tresspass charge, I am not a lawyer so none of this is legal advice but I am sure you can find this to be true in Mississippi, and many other states. http://lp.findlaw.com/ Why should the meer fact that you dont want people looking at something, not automaticly make it a crime to look at it.
I realy dont agree with either the DMCA or tress pass laws, but am I not correct in believeing that this train of thought taken to its logical extreem would indicate that, doing any thing agnist the will of another would be deemed ilegal.
Why is it that you never not take a math, simulation, statistics method to busting myths. I would love it if before the myth you explained the real physics/chemistry/thermodynamics/electrical/etc. principles and show the math behind what you are doing. This seems like it would allow one to have real control and dynamic varibles and then you could use the simulations to see how well your experment fit the hypothesis. The scientific method is a great proven way to do things and you guys are some of the most clever I have seen. Is it the television, market, that is driving this type of expermenting? If it is the market do you think you could use your aclaim to help people get interested in real science, and further do you see your show a being a gateway for young viewers to get into science and engeneering circulums.
If any one wants to use highpower 802.11 on 2.4gh and use huge wave guide antenas with that high power equipment then all they have to do is get a ham lisense. With the introductory lisense you can use super high power out put transmitters and realy high gain antenas compared to the comercialy avable stuff. How would you like 100 wats PEP on your access point? The only thing is you cant use it for comercial purposes only personal uses. If you get the liscense you also get access to other bands and you can legaly build your own radio equipment. Its not hard to get the lisence either and there are probaly tons of hams in your area to help you get into and promote radio hobbies like packet radio. If you want some something that will help understand the scram jet and you have a little aerospace knowledge check out this paper on combustion on a supersonic stream, http://www.anu.edu.au/Physics/aldir/publications/H yslop_hons_thesis_1998.pdf. Its amazeing that this jet can sustain a burn with out a flame holder, at least it looks like it does.
Seems like if you travel at mach 7 there would have to be a massive acceleration/deceleration period if you wanted to survive the trip. Would it even be posible to make use of the capilibility to move a person at mach 7 if you wanted to take the shortest path from one place to another with out going the long way arround our little 8000 mile wide planet.
I am pretty sure that its posible to generate fake packets that have a made up mac and ip and just anticipate the conversation. In fact seems like blind spoofing would be the best way to do someting like that. That would realy tear up their statistical data.
Several points to think about, When was the last time some one was blugoned to death with a gun... why sue the gun manfacutres? Seems like the amo manufactures should be the ones to blame. On the comparison to smokeing mentioned earlier stateing that tobaco companies were held responsible for their product and having a reply of something like " p2p does not put adictive things in their product except for maby porn" I would have to say nicoteen is not physicaly adictive unless the chemicals in your body are present that make your feel bad, I would bring up the point that nicoteen by itself is not bad at all, its only when a person CHOOSES to introduce it into his or her body it that it becomes bad and then their body is the one hurting itself, the cigaret companies could easily claim that they have a legimate product since cigarets make great fuses for smoke grenades and other such items.
Any how we should consider all the posibilities of the case and review president and on top of that use common sense and logic to break everything down to the lowest common denominator before we start to argue. We should also establish a common moral rule set and debate rule set before we argue a political point, other wise we will get no where fast.
I have a Tandy 1000 with an old tokenring nic that is currently working as a network avability testing computer. It pings each of our machieens at set intervals and if does not get a reply then a short script drops us an email to tell us to get it back online. The computer seems to work fine, but we realy should move it to another internet conection, as we have no way of telling when the whole network conection is down.
I thought that the purpose of copyright law was to protect the copyright holder from others PROFITING from their work, not to protect the holder from not makeing money, I fail to see how one could profit from Giveing Away their Purchased music on the internet, provided they are not trying to run the musicain out of business in order to sale their own music. Seems like we have lost site of the original purpose of copyright law. I cant wait to see what hapens when CNC machieens become a staple at home. Will milling and roboticly asembeling your own versions of patented household apliances become ilegal too. What have we gotten ourselves into.
If you would just get a ham liscense then you would have primary allocation for some of the 2.4ghz band and you could take steps to resolve the phone interference properly. When I release code I realy dont care about getting any certifications and accridations linked to it. I write code to be usefull not to be noticed. You use open source at your own risk, and the beauty of it is if you dont like it you can just change it. Why would you need a quality assurance process in place for open source. If its open and its quality people will use it. If it doesnt work then people will just blow it off. Does any one else share in my oppinion?
Lets start takeing cammeras onto the airplane ourselves and lets also use cameras with teloscopic lenses to constantly monitor the CEOs of Southwest after all what if they are "Terrorists." Every one must live in fear. If you dont then something is wrong. That means that the terroist out there are not winning. If an airplane is private property and you dont want to be taped then dont fly with companys that tape you. A boycot is terible things to waste. And when no companys take you seriously then do like me just fly yourself where you want to go. Airplanes are not that expensive if you use them regularly, and you work on them yourself. Lets not be dependent on others, lets take some responsibility and free our selves from corporate airlines. Maby airlines will one day be like busses, and every one will just take their own car.
This lawsuit seems rather frightening to me, if these guys win and this is declared to be fraudulent practice, then this could have huge implications for programing. I would hate to have to have to reference a chart and make sure that any GUIs I built did not resemble any of the system boxes from every operateing system out there. Notice that, the add that they display as an example looks like a windows box. Did the original programers intend to market to a mac audience and not even bother to make sure that their banners did not look like a windows system message? Prehaps they were marketing to a linux useing audience. And when you click the add you do get a message. I would say that any advertisement would be clasified as a message. Also I am sure that some system did help in the creation of that message, so how on earth would that window be missrepresenting themselves any one. I guess that people can be fooled by any thing. Oh and on a last not any one who wants to buy the full quit claim deed to our nations capatiol can call me, its a wonderfull piece of property. Lets grow up and not blame everyone for the ignorance of a few.
