  1. Last lesson of ml_class.org on Google Outlines AI-Based Number Reading For Street View Photos · · Score: 4, Interesting

  2. Oblivion, the localization nightmare... on Inside Video Game Localization · · Score: 1

I bought the French version of Oblivion and it was simply awful.
For example, they translated the Weighing scale and the Fish scale with the same word : ecaille
I don't speak about the voices, the missing dialogues, etc. ...
All the game was like this and there is no way to buy to an English version in France.
And to make it worse, you have to wait longer and pay more for a game of lesser quality.
I you can speak English and want to play the game with all the content, either you buy it on the net and have to pay the shipping or get it on P2P.
    Quite sad

Apparently, they didn't choose to go EDTV, but they might have as well...

I do have a Wii but don't have a GC.

    No, I am not joking...

Concerning the religion in the US, I hope _you_ are joking.
What is the motto of the US ? In god we trust
Have you heard George W. Bush recently ?

Ask google : US politics religion
You will find 113 000 000 results... Quite a lot for a coutry which "enforces a seperation between Church and State"

And concerning state religion in europe, take a look at the wikipedia, it is very informative : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_religion
and you will see, for example, that France separated state and religion in 1905 (and not 1988)

  6. Atheism or Agnosticism ? on Scott Adams Suggests Bill Gates For President · · Score: 1

Atheism is believing God does not exists.
It is a matter of faith : "I believe God does not exists"

Agnosticism is not knowing if there is a God or not.

To be a non believer is to be an agnosticist not an atheist.

  7. Strange american point of view on Scott Adams Suggests Bill Gates For President · · Score: 1

As an european, I am always shocked to discover how religion and politics are entangled in the US.
In Europe, religion is considered as a private domain with little public display.

In certain country (like France), mixing politics and religion is sometimes perceived as offensing!

Moreover, I really don't see the interest God might have in oil reserve or world economy...

  8. Guitar Hero is not about Guitar on Guitar Hero Is Big Hit With Bands · · Score: 1

The point is : it is just a game.

Playing Dance Dance Revolution is not about dancing (more like epilepsy)
Playing Guitar Hero is not about playing the guitar...

The whole point is just a Rythm game with rock music and a funny controler.
There was dance mat, bongos, maracas, now, there is a guitar...

Don't you think someone like Michael Schumarer wouldn't enjoy a racing game ?
Or what about Tony Hawk playing Tony Hawk Pro Skater ?

You are right, Guitar Hero is not about learning to play the real instrument.
But, to have fun with Rock, there was air guitar, now, there is guitar hero.

Or even another straight guy ?

If someone is showing someone else something disturbing (Not only porn, but anything) then, it is a nuisance...

But, if someone use ressources from his work for personnal purpose (I do have mp3 on my hard drive at work) and such a behaviour doesn't disturb work (for the person and coworkers), where is the problem ?

    Is something inherently bad ?
    I don't think so...

TFA doesn't tell how the images where found, but if it's the IT dep following a crash, it is an accident, and I doubt that a director would have the same treatment.

Porn at work is "bad", like solitaire, msn messenger and youtube...

  12. What will be the market of DirectX 10 ? on What Game Developers Think about DirectX 10 · · Score: 1

It will only be available on Vista, a lot of current hardware will have difficulties running on it, so the market will be relativly small and the hardware doesn't support it yet.

Considering the investments represented by a game, I think it is safer to develop for DirectX 9 for the months comming.

  13. I do see a difference with France... on Chinese Students' Cheating Techniques - Don't Try at Home · · Score: 1

This problem is not like the baccalaureat but more like the medical school where there are a lot of people wanting to attend but only limited places and a limited number of tries.

During the baccalaureat, cheating is not so common and severly condemned.
Moreover, you can try to have it at any moment (every years, retired people, soccer mom and so on try to pass it and sometimes have it).

I think in any country, there is some kind of tests and exams and this kind of system is not debated here.
The problem with China is that, in order to go on, you have a "one chance try" and the selection is very hard (4 student for 1 place). The students have so much pressure that they feel in need to risk their health in order to cheat. I think it is sad but it is the result of an Excellence Culture.

Just take a look at japanese school system. Normality (i.e. you can't double a year their) and excellence (you have to attend lessons outside in order to be the best) is at such a point that a lot of students commit suicide in front of a fail.

Any human society should consider failure as a mean of progress and not condemn it.
There isn't just one way right...

  14. It is not about student's value on Chinese Students' Cheating Techniques - Don't Try at Home · · Score: 1

There are 10 millions student and 2,5 millions places.
It is not about students value but about the system.

What if in a generation there is 5 millions student who really deserve better schooling ?
The will be left aside because there aren't enough places.

    Compare with the US...
How many students are rejected, not because they aren't good enough but because the is no place to go ? 75% ? I really doubt it.

  15. Encouragements are not necessary on Chinese Students' Cheating Techniques - Don't Try at Home · · Score: 1

  17. Where is the point ? on Final Fantasy vs. Oblivion · · Score: 2, Insightful

The article is not a real comparison between two completly different games but about why the author prefer a game more than the other...
IMHO, the whole article is biased, just take a look at the screenshots, do you see any of Oblivion ?

For me, a really interesting article would have been build around the differences between eastern RPGs and western RPGs. Trying to analyse the reason why each genre is fun in its own way, trying to improve them in mixing concepts but still respecting the specificities...

I am a big fan of the Elder Scrolls, but I just buyed "Fable : The lost chapters" on PC and it is amazing.
The graphics are stunning, lightly cartoonized and the world is really reacting to your actions. The only problem is : Too small, too linear.

I think (hope) the guys at Bethesa saw this game and will make TES4 evolve in the good way.

Anyway, I'm saving money in order to upgrade my PC so I can play TES4 in good conditions.

  22. Games should be made for the people who buy them on Are Games Getting Easier? · · Score: 2, Interesting

We see a lot of evolutions in games, some good, some bad. But, the one thing to think about is where do the money come from ?
The game industry is a business, there are clients who buy goods with earned money. If you don't produce anything who appeals to the ones who have money, you are then a dead company
The problem, as stated in this article about interstitial gamer http://www.gamasutra.com/features/20050809/eilers_ 01.shtml is the gap between the people who buy games and the people who evaluates games (and later write articles).
I was an hardcore gamer, but now, if I can play 3 hours during the week, I consider myself happy (and I don't have a kid yet !).
Random difficulty, sparse savepoint, limited continue are just a mean of frustration. Think about one of the greatest game ever : Monkey Island. You can save when you want, you cannot die (unless you really want it, but you have been warned) but it is challenging and fun The real difficult game is the one who is challeging you and it is not about limited continues but about player profiling, configuration and choice. The player shouldn't have to learn difficult combination or replay the level 42 times if he don't want too (or don't have the time to).
