The way I figure it, humanity has three potential futures:
Mad Max - We use up all the resources and plunge into Pure Freedom, although I like to call it Really Bad Shit.
Blade Runner - Corporations run the world, profit is everything, and the future is very very gritty for the folks at the bottom.
Star Trek - We invent ourselves into plenty, people can learn and grow as much as they desire or have the will to do.
I'd pick Star Trek. And let's face it, from where we're sitting, Star Treck looks pretty damn Commie. I'm OK with that, mostly because it's not commie at all and we're batshit insane. The point here is, you're restricting choices. Logical Fallacy: Black and White.
I'll take peaceful, everything is a public good, no price tag is stupid but lets call it a sane price tag, and no randomly killing people. It IS quite possible to do that. It is a viable option, and doesn't it sound pretty damn good? So stop inventing Scary Big Brother and help us build it.
P.S. Damnit, we're so CLOSE to Star Trek. Oh, not the spaceships, but universal education is a Khaaannnn! Academy away (I'm so sorry), We have a food distribution problem, not a food production problem, our tech is pretty impressive, our communications are practically free and instant, and damnit, the whole problem is one of culture and systems, not of possibility.
You should perhaps actually READ the paper.... No mention of a finite system. In fact, many of the scenarios are cyclical. All of your points are wildly missing what the paper actually said. Price points weren't even in there. Funny that you got modded insightful, I'm guessing they didn't read the paper either.:D
yeah, cause these boards are soooo lefty.:D Bwaaaahahahah! And lefties sell fear. You know how they're always ranting about Terrorists and Commies, and good upstanding moral christians being persecuted.... The downfall of morals in our Once Proud Country. Those wacky lefties.:D Always trying to use fear to get a gullible population in line with their interests.
This didn't cost much. It's a few mathmatical formulas and a few graphs from tweaking the formulas for different scenarios... Which is exactly what math is for imo. The pay for the authors for a year (and I'm being very generous in time needed) wouldn't touch the cost of a rocket.
Frankly, I think this is useful. This sort of thing is exactly what we pay policy wonks for... to examine our world and present scenarios and recommendations based on science to our representatives. So... quit whining. I think the survivability of our society is worth paying 3 people to hole up and do some math for a few months. Perhaps that's just me.....
Ah, income tax. I had forgotten about that. Yeah. I'm not really worried about that. I can see why you are. Difference of opinion.
Show me a Free Market. Anywhere. Any time. Please.:D
The CIA and NSA are doing more than invading your privacy. They're forming public opinion by using astroturfing, shills, social media tricks, etc. And you think the phasing out of incadescents is a trick to get into your house? Ugh....
"Obamaphones" is a non issue, a made up issue.... and a little subsidy that existed long before him. Whatever. Meanwhile, I don't see your kind railing against huge subsidies for profitable companies.....
Why on earth would I want to live in North Korea? It's a dictatorship hellhole. Logical Fallacy: Black or White. How about I go live in scandanavia? They have lots of socialism, but also lots of capitalism, and pretty women.:D
It's true, I shouldn't get so riled up.
No, it's not terrible that people have to buy bicycles. Lookk !@#$. No one is saying everyone has to be equal. The only people saying that are YOU people, when you're making up what we think. We lefties don't say that. That's !@#$ing silly. Every living creature on this earth has to work for it's food and shelter. We don't say differently. What we want is an equal playing field, and it's quite obvious that the United States, as it's going, is Corrupted by the influence of Money. And monied people don't like sharing, and they've been rigging the game in their favor for decades now. We just want to level the playing field so everyone has equal OPPORTUNITY. Equal Stuff is just.... ew. Terrible.
Also, I'm 35. I'm not quite a young wippersnapper. I'm gainfully employed. I'm starting a business. I'm a capitalist....
And Heinlein is great. I've read quite a bit of his stuff, with an open mind. The Moon Is A Harsh Mistress is a great book. (also a libertarian wet dream and A Work Of Fiction) Also, he's a dirty old man, but a lot of them were in those days... Zinn is hardly a communist. Hell, he might BE a commie, but that doesn't matter. The book is really great. Really. Go read it, with an open mind....
Why do you see enemies in one of our largest trading partner? Enemies everwhere... China will never attack us, for the simple reason that we buy a LOT of stuff from them. Why kill your largest customer? So..... calm down. sheesh. Oh, Russia? Yeah, that old cold war mentality isn't quite gone... sigh.
Are you in a Southern state? Many of the conservative governors in southern states declined the expansion of medicaid, which would have been covered by the feds, leaving a huge gap in insurance coverage. That creates problems, as I'm sure they knew it would...
What state are you in? Many states... (southern ones, cough cough) didn't take up the Free To The State expansion of medicaid, which left a big gap in coverage. Cough cough, as the conservative governors of those states new would happen.
oh quit whining, and quit repeating talking points. I am starting a business. There are no huge tax burdens, and no oppressive regulations. It's minimal paperwork for a business license, and frankly, as a citizen, I WANT restaurants to have to meet health code, fire code, and I want their waiters to go through the stupid little class to get their food handlers permits. There should be regulations on how to treat employees, how to pay them, etc. Basic legal infrastructure is just as important as physical infrastructure.
I will agree that preferential treatment for the Big Guys is killing us. Stop giving them tax cuts that make it hard for me to compete. Use the money on basic infrastructure that we all need to do business.
P.S. I'm happy for the ACA. I WAS worried about insurance when I eventually quit my day job.
right. Free. Tell that to the 3/5s of People.:D (just in case you don't get it, that means the slaves. I realize History might not be your strong suit. ) Yup. This country was founded on Freedom! We were totally commies (which didn't exist yet, again, I realize history might not be your strong suit) until we threw off the British Commies (look up the East India Trading Company sometime), and then we invented Capitalism here in the USA. Then we gave aaaalllllll that Freedom to the slaves, which were totally free, and they helped us build up our economy out of the gratitude for our bestowing Freedom on them. Riiiight.
While I'm at it... only 100 years? You know the USA is older than that, right? So, are you saying that we lost our Freedom around 1914? I'm very curious, what was happening then? Well, there was the build up to the Great Depression. I'm probably giving you too much credit. You probably just don't know how old our country is.
The Free Market is a lie. It has never existed, and it never will. Any time you get three people together, two of them collude to screw the third. Your freedoms HAVE been chipped away, but it's usually our completely shitty response to Terrorism that does it, not great boogeyman of the Left. Mind you, the CIA and the NSA have been doing this shit for decades now in our own country and abroad. You should read up on what the US did in South America, while we were spreading Freedom by deposing democratically elected leaders that got in the way of Profits.
If you don't want to help the needy, fund basic education for the betterment of all, (I don't know where you got shelter and telephone service from...), etc etc, go live in fucking Somalia. With my taxes, I buy civilization. I'm going to bike my hippy ass to work tomorrow on publicly funded roads and I'm going to APPRECIATE the basic infrastructure that REALLY makes my country great.
Go read a history book. Start with something by Howard Zinn. "A People's History of the United States" is a great book.
"Tell that the the families of passengers on Flight MH370"....
Would this device have stopped the plane from crashing? No. It would have told us what happened... So, in other words, it wouldn't have helped at all. We'd still be telling the families that their loved ones died. We'd just be able to tell them what happened. Which we'll be able to do once we recover the plane (and we will, be patient, sheesh) and find the black box.
In other words, this device does nothing that we need. It just tells what happend in time for the news cycle to remember there was this plane crash.
No one's trying to control your thoughts. Stop trying to turn yourself into the victim so you feel better. Also, I believe in evolution, and it HAS helped me in my day to day life, greatly. It informs my diet, my relationships, my moods... my way of life. And my life is awesome, thank you very much.:D
Safeway has a homeopathy isle too. I can buy needlessly overpriced vitamins just as easily at Safeway as at Whole Foods. Big Whoop.
And frankly, probiotics are pretty useful. So I think this little story has more to say about the preconcieved notions of the author (and half the people in here complaining about whole foods as a Hippy Store) than about Whole Foods. Some people just gotta hate.
I like whole foods. That atmosphere is pleasing, the selection is nice, they actually stock Really Good Chocolate, etc etc. I'm a conscious consumer, and they provide better selection for me. Example, I love chips. Yum! I can get Doritos (yuck!) at Safeway, or I can get chips with an ingredient list I can understand at Whole Foods. What's not to love?
I think everyone here hating on Whole Foods are just using it as a proxy to hate on Libs. Hey, sorry I care about what I put in my body and try to shop accordingly. Sorry I care about the people that farmed my food, and want to shop accordingly. Yes, the Homeopathy isle in ANY store is stupid (Unless you're an expectant Mother, then load up on Folic Acid!)
Trying to equate shopping at Whole Foods to a belief in creationism is just..... a false equivelancy.
Look up Free Geek. I'm in Portland, and I do volunteer work with them. Perhaps the point of the story is to raise awareness and get you to make sure your e-waste is reused or recycled properly in your own community. Perhaps you'll start a Free Geek where you are.
There is a problem. The first step is to acknowledge that there is a problem. The second step is to do something about it, and your Logical Fallacy (black and white) about giving up tech is... Apathetic. Apathetic is a polite word. Your complete lack of empathy for other people is... sociopathic? Really, wow man. Thanks for what you do, but... wow. What an attitude to have about your fellow man. Reduce, Reuse, Recycle....... Care.
This is full of libertarians who keep saying that we wouldn't be having problems with these corporations if government would just get out of the way. Now, I do get the frustration with moronic city governments who gave a defacto monopoly to one company to roll out service in their city..... and later of course the company keeps the monopoly and never quite gets around to doing the infrasctructure work. I get it. But...
No, things won't magically get better if we take government out of the picture. Why not? The free market would fix it!
Except that The Free Market is a myth. Any entity, be it government or corporate, immediately starts tinkering with the Free Market to make it Less Free. It Happens, and we need an entity that is responsible to US, the people, to keep everyone on a level playing field. Yes, i realize we don't have that in the U.S. Mainly because our reps are so busy dialing for dollars so they can get reelected. That buys influence.
Getting rid of government doesn't make companies magically behave better. Freedom Industries is going bankrupt instead of paying the price of their actions. They'll be back with a new name in a few months, and no one will be the wiser. There are no appreciable downfalls to bad corporate behavior.
Lest you think I'm a fan of government.... Well, I kind of am. That's because I don't take for granted all the roads, power, water, sewer, organization, building codes, blah blah blah that I get from my government. I like my civilization. I just think they're let the corps run amok. I'm not a fan of government for that reason alone.
If you want better broadband in the U.S., we need to get money out of politics. Call your reps, complain, get involved at a city level, Get Off Your Ass.
wolf-pac.com. I'm working on a solution, and we're doing Very Well. I'll be saving our country, and enabling a fix to our broadband woes (by getting money out of politcs and allowing anything useful to happen) while you're complaining to random strangers on the internet.:D
Ah, and then you one upped yourself with a spineless fairy comment. Dude, take it down a notch. You're being a bit of an ass, and your own biases are showing a bit. You're also displaying the exact behavior that you're accusing them of. After all, only spineless fairies rush to silence criticism of yourself or others, right? I realize this might offend people like you who can't handle criticism, but that's not their problem.
I don't even know why you brought politics into it.... Anyway, what they said wasn't that bad. What you said was over the top. I'm just some random dude reading through posts. Theirs was.... mildly inpolite. Your response was off the charts.
Sigh. Well, you keep doing nothing. I'm sure that'll work out well for you. I'll just keep working with others in my state and saving your ass, little by little. I'm sure it's all hopeless, you know, except that we're succeeding in 20 states. All it really took was to try.
Nah, I'll bite... I'd rather politicians (and I've met several, and they're just people. Some are brighter than others), were taking public money to run their campaigns than corporate or lobbyist money. It's a matter of influence. And yes, people need to be informed. I don't count those stupid yard signs as informative, and I don't count the usual TV ad as informative either, but oh well.
You keep thinking "government bad" and not doing anything. I'll just be over here saving our country, from itself.:/
I buy all my clothes secondhand. I listend to street buskers. I hang out with musicians. I ride my bike. If you wanted, you could buy an electric car and a lot of solar panels, but I get your point. I buy shoes made in the USA. I buy local food. I drink WATER, it falls out of the sky.
I think you're telling yourself nothing can be done.... so you don't have to do anything. AND you're blaming other people. Bravo.:D
Get off your ass and change your own life. It's not even that hard.
The way I figure it, humanity has three potential futures:

"Im against this unless records can be retrieved and reviewed in cases of alleged police misconduct."
I'm pretty sure that's the entire point. Did you even read the summary? Use of force down by 50%, citizen complaints down 90%. This is AWESOME.
Huh... 'cause it says right on the wikipedia page that Shakespeare is required reading...

Hint. when denying racism, it's usually best to avoid using racist words in the same post. "Muzzies" indeed
Sigh. Well, take your stash of AR15's, and go up against the US Military. I'll hold my breath, 'cause you won't last longer than 60 seconds. :D

That's funny, 'cause I;m helping my state call for an article V convention to fix money in Congress, and you're doing nothing.
"The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing."
"All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent."
How amazing it would have been if instead of arguing with me how pointless it is, all of you had actually gone and done something? Go Go Go!
