    I'm an American, and this pisses me off. This is so obviously stupid. We should not detain someone just because they disagree with us. We shouldn't even question them... There was NO reason to stop him getting on that plane. He was no threat to the plane, to the people, or to the country. Everyone can clearly see that this is just stupid.

    My fellow Americans... Pony up.

    You think the difference is high taxes and supporting the general society? Russia's economy is in the toilet, has horrible institutionalized corruption, crushing poverty.... and you think it's because El Norte pays too much taxes?

    Don't worry, the same thing that messed up the soviet union is going to mess us up. They tried to buiild a military they couldn't afford to keep up with the Joneses(USA). Massive corruption leached money out of the system and into the pockets of a few defense and energy schmucks.

    Meanwhile Canada has sane banking laws, way less military spending, and they seem to be doing fine with their health care for all, better overall health, less financial stupidity, etc.

    I think you looked and saw the wrong problem.

    I just looked at their financials....

    OK, stock price sucks. Guess what, Intel hasn't moved in years either. AMD is profitable. I can't help but think that the decision to lay off a bunch of workers is short term "omg the stock is too low" thinking... and you know what? Dumping workers usually doesn't make the stock price go up any significant amount. All it does is burn out the remaining workers and create low morale and more mistrakes.

    I work in semi manufacturing. Mistrakes are BAD. It's better to pay the extra worker (not that my bosses get it either).

    I'm really sick of bosses firing people to make the numbers look good. Lets hire some more people to make the numbers look good. Lets put out great product to make the numbers look good. Lets focus on the health of the organization instead of the stupid numbers, to make the numbers look good.

    grumble.....

    I log in, I click firefox. Sometimes I click the OpenOffice button. Frequently I click the I don't know what the thing's named button, type the name of the program I want to use, and click the icon.

    Very infrequently do I need to do anything else. 90% of my usage is provided with an easy button. The program starts.

    I'm frankly happy. I only have 2gb of RAM, everything works fine for me.

    What's all the complaining about? It works. Dual monitor works. Everything is easy to find. Occasionally I get miffed at all the crud in the "Ubuntu Software Center", but that's not Unity's fault.... :D

    /Shrug. Non issue to me.

    We lost our connection with the land? There's a garden out back that says different. We aren't handy any more because Home Depot sells pre glued tiles? S'funny, those pre glued tiles probably enable a wider range of people to do their own work.

    There are a LOT of poeple in Home Depot, and they don't look like professional carpenters, plumbers, etc. Lots of folks are doin' it for themselves, if only to save a buck. Plumbers are expensive.

    This whole thing is stupid, and to then somehow connect our lack of DIY manliness to the loss of manufacturing jobs is.... even more stupid. Those jobs went overseas because the bosses thought they could make a bigger buck doing so. It had nothing to do with how handy American workers are....

    This sounds like an old man remembering the fuzzy "good old days" full of nostalgia and bemoaning how terrible it is now. Go Away. Things are fine. People make things. People do things for themselves. Not everyone, sure.... but that's not new.

    It's called a role playing game... ROLE.... Not ROLL. A swashbuckly Robin Hood type (5th level fighter) is very different from a cynical mercenary (5th level fighter) or a retired town sheriff (5th level fighter), or perhaps even a soldier in the service of the local Lord (5th level fighter)

    If you want to vote with your dollar, and you don't want your dollar going to slave labor... Don't buy a new phone. Don't give your money to a big company. Give it to your neighbor, or some random person on EBAY. Get a used phone. Yes, likely, that other person will turn around and give their money to a big company, but they were likely to do that anyway. At least you voted with your principles.

    Also, it's a lot cheaper. Yes, you won't get the latest and greatest. That's the price you pay. Seriously, it's not the end of the world.

    Or, I suppose, you could look up the OpenMoko project. Or get a raspberry pi and hack something together yourself using VOIP.

    Yeah, I did it too. I was there, hitting refresh. They sold out almost immediately, and now whole swaths of folk have to wait to get one just a little bit more.

    For that, people are pissed, Eben's a jerk, worst launch ever, etc etc etc.

    Guys, they're a non profit. Demand was too great. That's not a BAD thing. Yes, you have to wait. That does not mean that it was the worst launch ever... It means you need to be patient a while longer. Instead of being upset that you didn't get yours, how about taking a step back. You can wait. It won't kill you. This is a good thing. The raspberry pi team did something cool, and that coolness is not diminished just because some of us didn't get one.

    Sheesh. Calm Down.

    Actually, the third world countries tend to care the most... This (I'm an American) First World country is usually the one holding everything up.

    Ok, you sell a widget. I'm your customer....

    First, I care about the money. If you're cheaper than your competition, I'll buy you. If you're not cheaper in the initial term, your widget better last longer. It should be easier to use than your competition too. If not that, you'd better have GREAT support. Actually, you should have that anyway.

    Does it matter to me that your stuff is open source? Will I have to code to make your widget work? I really don't want to... I'd rather you did that. I have other things to worry about. I'm making my own widget.

    So... do I care if you are open source? You should ask your customers that.... They are the ones that are going to see if you succeed or fail....

    Ok... So lets say you DO open source your stuff.... Your competition steals it. Ok.... are they cheaper? Longer lasting? easier to use? Good support?

    Note how all those things that I care about having nothing to do with closed or open source. They have to do with the impacts on your customers...

    I think you're asking the wrong people...

    Actually, this is what I want my government to spend money on. This would be a large investment for a smaller entity, and frankly might not be worth it. For a relatively small amount (government wise), we ALL gain. There is risk. By having the gov. take that risk, we spread it around so it won't hurt any other particular entity.     It sounds like you're on the right path... aerospace with dual major in mechanical.

    You have some time though, so I'd suggest you get a hobby in the field you're going into. Help out some open source rocketry projects. Surely they exist. Launch some things up really high. Rig up some cameras and get pictures. Write some code. etc. etc.

    One day someone is going to be looking at your resume. If it's one in a thousand, you probably won't get noticed. Hopefully they'll be looking at it because Bob down in the lab says he knows this one guy who really kicked ass on this one project. Hopefully you'll already know the guy through the right circles. Hopefully they'll look you up on the web and see that you have your hand in the right projects, that you do good work, and that you love what you do.

    Also, it would be good to actually do the work you're seeking to go into. It'll tell you if you're on the right path for YOU.

    The secret to Industry is that you don't get promoted to do work .... You get promoted and paid when it's noticed that you're ALREADY doing the work and oh, perhaps they should pay you for that....

    I can't use a mouse for more than an hour before I get problems. Yes, that's my fault... I rest my arm on my desk and move my wrist. Yes, that's bad ergo practice. Frankly, I think it's silly to expect me to hover my arm for more than a few seconds...

    Trackballs are just as bad.

    I DO recommend a thumb trackball.... you rest your whole arm, and the only part that moves is your thumb. Once I got used to it, my problems disappeared.

    Congress is bought and paid for. That's my biggest gripe, and I believe that most of the problems with our country today stem from this problem. We have crappy regulation of businesses. Everyone gripes about gov. red tape. OK, i'm down with reducing that. But when some jackhole can get 20 odd miners killed because he couldn't be bothered to vent methane out of the mine... and all the EPA can do is throw stupid little fines that the company ignores... Or when the financial industries can lie about the strengths of investments they are selling, when they can bet against their OWN products... and they get a bailout despite being the asses who caused the problem.... It's time for someone to step in a kick some ass. We can't do it. That's why we collectively get together and have this Government thing. Unfortunately, it's too busy taking money to play cop. I wish the Occupy folks would share this vision and narrow their griping to this one topic, but I'm not worried about it. Folks is pissed, and they're letting everyone know. That's right up there next to apple pie for Americanism. I think it's weird so many in the media are painting this as a Left movement. Everyone's pretty pissed right now. I support the Occupy movement. I can't be there, but I did order them some pizza. :D I do wish they'd get a cohesive message though. Get the money out of politics!

    I don't want to buy a "product" that I can't tinker with.

    I want to put my own version of Linux on it. I want to be able to open it up and put in more RAM, a bigger hard drive, replace the WIFI card, etc...

    I hate having to search the internet for custom ROMs. I hate not knowing which dodgy weirdo put together what ROM. I hate having the OS loaded in firmware...

    Give me a tablet form factor with an SSD drive and Ubuntu on it. I can actually USE this to do my homework. No, a text app doesn't replace OpenOffice functionality. I want to be able to install my own stuff on it. I want to program on it. I want to ACTUALLY USE the tablet as my MAIN computer. Give me HDMI out and a real USB port... I'll plug in a seperate monitor, mouse, and keyboard when I need to do my homework. I just also want to read on the bus, or in the park, or check a map when I'm in a new place, which the tablet form factor is great for.
