America is such a fiscally conservative country that we bailout banks to the tune of 25 billion dollars , repeatedly bailed out airlines for a couple of dozen billion every couple of decades, bailed out S&L associations costing the American taxpayer another 124 billion, subsidize the agricultural industry at 16 billion dollars a year.

I could make this even worse by mentioning the costs of needlessly invading Iraq in search of WMD or talk about all the wonderful pork projects and "terror funding" that gets wasted but there are people who have written books on the subject and detail this much better than I ever could.

It allows him to pick up votes from people who felt who wouldn't be "tough on terror" (Yes I know giving telecoms immunity doesn't make us safer but unfortunately a large portion of the US population does). Once he becomes president there is absolutely nothing keeping him from having his AG nail the telecoms to the cross.
If the goal is to punish the telecoms which would you rather have? 1.) Obama votes against amnesty and looses the election because of it, leaving McCain in the whitehouse to ensure the telecoms never get prosecuted.
2.) Obama votes for amnesty now gets a seat in the white house and then proceeds to have his AG go after everyone and anyone involved in domestic spying.
This is a matter of the least bad choice, from his perspective. I'm sure he would like to have the telecoms prosecuted but making a stand now is not in the best interests of the ultimate goal of prosecuting them.

Make manufacturers bear the ENTIRE cost of properly and safely disposing of their products, and overnight we'd have cleaner, greener, more long-lasting and durable products.

Very idealistic of you but manufacturers will NEVER bear the cost, it will be passed on to the consumer who will then bitch and moan to their government representation that they are being gouged. The manufacturers will then play the victim, "It's the big bad government restricting our ability to provide you with cheap goods". Now Mr. John Q. Politician is stuck in a real crap hole because the next election is coming up soon and his constituents are angry at him because they are paying what they perceive is too much for certain goods. Also the manufacturers lobby who funded his last campaign are threatening to fund his competition who has promised to rescind any laws that keep the manufacturers from doing business as usual. To compound John Q. Politician's problems the manufacturers are saying they will have to move their factories to more friendly territory in Asia so they can continue to stay competitive providing cheap goods. This would cause thousands of jobs to be lost among Mr John Q. Politicians constituency and many thousands more job losses among the constituency of his colleagues who will refuse to endorse him if he goes against a bill that will hurt their own chances of re-election.

Now he is facing pressure from his constituency, lobbyists, and even his own colleagues.

What do you suppose Mr. Politician does? Stick to his guns and fight the good fight? Hell no he doesn't. He votes to rescind any law that forces the manufacturers to bear any costs that will be pushed onto consumers. Why? because if he doesn't he will be voted out of office and the guy who takes his office will do what he refused to.

Is it right? No. Do I agree with it? No. But thats the way it is.

    From Aaron Seigo's blog:

"Hey!" I hear you say, "I see icons on that desktop!" That's quite right. (And, I must say, you are quite observant today. ;) So what was a mumbling about earlier then when I said the icons were gone?

Well, we now have a folder view applet courtesy of Frederik Höglund. It can view any folder you want, including the desktop folder. You can also set a filter, making it possible to, for instance, view just images or whatever. It uses KIO so you can view remote folders as well. You can drag items to and from it, delete files, scroll, etc. It lines everything up in a nice grid and uses the same drawing routines that Dolphin, Konqueror, KRunner and others use from kdelibs for the icons.

As you can see they didn't get rid of desktop icons, they made having desktop icons BETTER.

Taking the lead of what exactly? Gnome has followed a trend of removing features and giving users few options while KDE has been giving users more features and more options.

Some people feel that completely removing options is a good idea because they are looking to target corporations and limiting options makes support easier, but I have always felt that KDE's approach is much better. Give the users all the options they could imagine and then let them decide what is best. With KDE's approach you can always have some sort of locked down "corporate default" setting that would make support easier but with Gnome's approach what do you do when a user wants a feature that has been removed?

I have family members who are in Haiti and Jamaica who have been trying to gain US citizenship for years and in some cases decades. They had many opportunities to come here illegally but they chose to respect US laws and wait their turn. Some of them have worked their entire lives and spent thousands of dollars just to earn US citizenship. It irritates all of them when there is talk of amnesty or easing immigration laws because people decide to break the rules. This has been a large topic of conversation in my family for awhile now and the consensus is that they feel like their sacrifice to get into the country means nothing if the laws are changed to appease people who break the law.

The argument that the process is too difficult or too expensive is total crap. As I stated earlier many of my family members are from Haiti(the poorest country in the western hemisphere and one of the poorest countries in the world). The standard of living in Haiti makes Mexicans look wealthy in comparison yet I know dozens of Haitian immigrants who worked hard (in Haiti) saved their money and gained their citizenship legally. If people from the poorest country in this hemisphere can come to the US the right way why is it that Mexicans can't do the same?
