but realistally he needs to get his head out of the clouds and back on the ground. It would be a lot better for him to turn his efforts to making a light weight and reliable tractor. One that is easy to build, cheap to own, and easy to fix. Once nigeria starts feeding it's people then they can think about flying.

Comments like this are why slashdot needs an +1 ignorant modifier. Nigeria's problems are not caused by lack of agricultural technology. There is wide spread ethnic and religious tension that has been going on for decades. Like most of Africa's countries there are factions within Nigeria that were created by European colonialism. These factions are still at conflict today and keep Nigeria from being able to progress due to lack of national unity. Religious conflict between Muslims and Christians in Nigeria also have played a large role in keeping Nigeria from progressing.

Combine the internal conflict between factions with corrupt governments who misappropriate foreign aid and run up the national debt and you end up with a large portion of the populations suffering and starving. No amount of cheap reliable tractors are going to solve Nigeria's agricultural problems. Combine your logic with what the real causes of starvation in Nigeria are and this guy should give up what he loves to do and what? become a politician? Because it is going to take effective leadership for a country like Nigeria to feed its people not tractors.

I am not a web developer in fact I all of the work I have ever done was c, c++, backend php development, and some php internals. We are rapidly approaching a point where a very large percentage of applications will be able to be written in scripting languages (BE AFRAID!!) because of the amount of system resources available to the average person. Is this a good thing? I don't know, but at some point writing applications in the real languages isn't going to make economic sense.

And lets not forget the cell phone:

The first fully automatic mobile phone system, called MTA (Mobile Telephone system A), was developed by Ericsson and commercially released in Sweden in 1956. This was the first system that didn't require any kind of manual control, but had the disadvantage of a phone weight of 40 kg (88 lbs). MTB, an upgraded version with transistors, weighing 9 kg {19.8 lbs), was introduced in 1965 and used dual-tone multifrequency signaling. It had 150 customers in the beginning and 600 when it shut down in 1983.

In 1967, each mobile phone had to stay within the cell area serviced by one base station throughout the phone call. This did not provide continuity of automatic telephone service to mobile phones moving through several cell areas. In 1970 Amos E. Joel, Jr., another Bell Labs engineer,[4] invented an automatic "call handoff" system to allow mobile phones to move through several cell areas during a single conversation without loss of conversation.

I don't want to come off as paranoid because I hate conspiracy theorists, but the technology we all enjoy today was invented in the 60's. I would not be surprised in the least if there was technology that is not available to the general public because it is top secret, is extremely costly, or a combination of both. There are very brilliant people out there that if approached with the offer of having a nearly unlimited budget, time, and the ability to pursue their field of interest would jump at the opportunity and produce technology that we could only dream of.
