I think you severely underestimate peoples ability to adapt. If civilization as we know it were to collapse I'm sure most of the people on slashdot are intelligent enough to figure out how to survive on their own. Now if your argument was that they might not be physically fit enough to do so I might have to agree with you.
When I can easily sync my linux/wm5/symbian/whatever OS phone to my linux desktop wake me. These are just going to be more linux phones that sync with windows desktop easily but on the linux desktop require using some poorly documented library that may or may not work on the current version of your phone. Then IF your phone happens to work with said library/module you are going to have to edit all sorts of config files and PRAY that your phone is actually recognized. After all this you better hope that your mail client, calendar, and contact manager of choice work with said library.

There are a few problems with your argument, first a large portion of the users who were on Friendster migrated to Myspace and currently there is a mass migration of users from myspace TO facebook. Googling the growth trends of myspace and facebook currently show myspace is losing users to facebook. In fact there was one article I read that showed myspace growth is slowing at the same rate that facebooks membership is growing. Sometime in the near future it will be another site growing while facebook declines, there is nothing about facebook, myspace, or any other social networking site that is so extraordinary that a few bright college kids with a lot of time on their hands could not duplicate and tailor for the next generation of kids who are going to want a completely different experience.
Think of it this way when those of us who are in early to mid twenties get older and have kids what are the chances that our children are going to want to be on facebook WITH us. Not likely, my younger cousins are 11 and 12 and they now avoid Facebook specifically because an old timer like myself (at 26) is on there. It won't be long until someone closer to their age is entering college and comes up with a better social networking site for their peers.
The problem is that sites like myspace and facebook ARE NOT long term hubs for people to visit. They are trendy sites, back in '99 when I was in a freshman in college the place to go was blackplanet, mi gente, Asian Avenue, and livejournal. After these sites it was friendster which was ethnically all inclusive. Now the new trend is myspace and facebook. All of these social networking sites are just fads and when something that looks better comes along everyone will abandon myspace/facebook/whatever and start aggregating friends somewhere else.
This is just the new proprietary numeric system. While the rest of the use use base2, 8, 16, or 10 Microsoft operate on baseMS. The 100,000 baseMS (65,535 base10) page white paper is forthcoming.

The thief used his cellphone that very night and with the help of the cell company he was able to get all of the numbers the person called. A reverse directory lookup later he had the address of one of the thieves friend/female family member.
After waiting in his car for two days (no shower, no sleep) he finally saw the guy who robbed him walking to his girlfriends house and held him at gunpoint. The guy who had originally robbed him called the cops and told them HE was held at gunpoint and guess where this genius is at now? In a state prison doing his third year for assault with a deadly weapon. When he was sentenced the judge told him that he didn't see any difference between him and the guy who he was robbed by.
Before you start posting on slashdot advocating vigilante justice I suggest you think about the consequences of being a vigilante. You aren't dog the bounty hunter and this isn't A&E.
When celebrities have their sex tapes stolen no one goes around saying what a tragedy a crime has been committed. We say what kind of idiot would tape themselves having sex. So why on earth would you think that when MediaDefender has their internal e-mails and tracking database stolen people are going to feel pity for them especially when they do business for such an unsympathetic cause. Instead people are gawking and gloating at this the same way they gawk and gloat when some celebrity they don't like gets caught with their pants down.
Personally I'm rooting for him getting a position at Geek Squad. The humiliation of having to ride around in that car and wear those clothes is a good start to some sort of punishment.

It has become a bit of a joke to the point where people who had never even heard of Appalachian State (even Michigans own fans) are buying App State T-shirts with the express purpose of wearing them at University of Michigan football games.
