    The F-1 was cooled by RP-1,not LOX, and was secondarily by cooled turbine exhaust (explaining the dark gaseous sheath below the exhaust nozzle). Hot O2 gas is far too corrosive. The real innovation was that the RP-1 was used as the hydraulic fluid in the steering actuators. Read 'Stages to Saturn' for a NASA engineering history of the project.
