I can't do anything but laugh at your assertions. I have a 3 year old boy, he very much acts like a 3 year old boy. Scraped up knees, dirt under the finger nails. You can do whatever you want with your children. I believe I'm doing pretty well with my son.
I am a "live and let live" type of person in general. However when the actions of an individual threaten the well-being of others unwillingly, then I do have a problem with that. If you want to go home and get high/drunk.. more power to you. I just want you to sober up before you get behind the wheel of your car.
If you want to somehow link this to being a helicopter parent, that's on you.
I don't care if people want to be careless with their own lives. I do care when they needlessly endanger others. It's really as simple as that for me. In the car, an adult passenger at least has the reasoning to say "uh, maybe you should watch the road instead of your phone because you just about hit that parked car".
If a person has a deathwish.. just don't take someone else out with you.
It has EVERYTHING to do with me if they cross the center dividing line and hit me head on. I am aware of my surroundings because I keep my eyes on the road. They have their head down fucking around with their phone, not knowing if they are actually still in their own lane.
I'm sorry if my empathy for my son as well as the well-being of children being subjected to needless risk is too much for you to handle. I don't give a shit about the parent.. but I sure as hell care about my son, myself, as well as that child in the other vehicle.
It's not some victimless crime, innocent people get hurt by those people who cannot detach from their cell phones while operating a 2000lb+ chunk of metal.
So they created an unrealistic test with unrealistic expectations. It is like they designed the test to promote cheating, and oh surprise, manufacturers cheat.
Or the manufacturers decided they were not going to invest in newer technologies because they would rather spend their money lobbying to get the limits changed.
If 1 automaker can meet regulations, all of them can. The ones that failed just didn't try hard enough.
As the parent of a young child, it infuriates me when I see some mother with a kid in a car seat texting. I'm not even a fan of talking on my phone while driving.
I wish the penalties would be much more harsh. What is so important that it can't wait until the car is parked somewhere?
If I won millions playing the lottery (unlikely because I buy maybe 1 or 2 tickets a year), I would still work. When I'm home for 10 days during our annual shut down, I get bored quickly. I doubt I would stay at my current job, even though it is pretty good. Most likely I'd try my hand at owning a small business... put that MBA to use.

I'm in Ohio. -20F wind chill still occurs. From my experience, the temperature is often warmer but the wind is stronger. We have less precipitation which is a problem because the underground aquifers are mostly replenished by the spring thaw. When it does get cold, it doesn't last long. I use to be able to play pond hockey frequently (all of Jan/Feb), now we're lucky to get 1 week of ice that is thick enough to be safe.
This past February, we had 2 Saturdays in a row that the temperature approached 70F. Both times we had 20-30mph sustained winds that made it very difficult to enjoy.
Better is a relative term.. but it is definitely warmer.
All I can do is give my experience. I got one pop up many months ago asking if I wanted to upgrade, I closed the box and haven't see anything since then.
There is still a button in the task bar but that's easy to avoid.
You don't have that problem because Apple "sheep" buy the latest product every year.
My wife had a MacBook that was 4 years old. For the last year, or so, that she used it, more and more websites just wouldn't load using Safari. We eventually took it to an Apple Store and the tech said that her OS was no supported and she would have to spend $100 to upgrade to the latest version.
We left and she got a laptop running Windows. It still runs like a champ after 5 years.
"You must be in the US. DO they still make breastfeeding mothers go hide in a special room at your work?"
The mothers in my office that pump while at work would not want to do it at their desk. In Europe is it common for mothers to pump while sitting at their desk?
If we expect to set up colonies on Mars that allow the growing of food crops, I think it's a reasonable expectation that our space travel technology would also improve.
I'm not saying it's anything that will happen soon.
You could always launch sod on the spacecraft, then you'd always have some fresh clippings available.
I imagine a voyage to Mars would require a modular spacecraft assembled after multiple unmanned launches from Earth. The manned component could have the required living organics necessary to start farming.
You should read up on how the Honda Jet came to be. A young engineer with a passion would not give up on his project, a couple decades later his dreams come true.
Not to mention how uncomfortable it will be to bump knees with the other passenger. I'm not sure how much room they think they have inside the car but very few cars on the road now have the interior space to effectively pull this off.
Yeah, my wife and I used those while in Paris. They seemed to be larger than needed and required 3 or 4 minutes between use to be ready for the next person.
I don't have all the details but I do think that someone who commits a crime and completes the punishment should be able to get back to a somewhat normal life. Some countries in the world do make this a bit easier, not in the US.
In the US, if you're even linked to a terrible crime it will haunt you for the rest of your life. Our government and news agencies think that just because they say "alleged" that is brings no harm to people who are actually innocent. Innocent until proven guilty.. it is meaningless as long as the accused name is allowed to be used before guilt is proven.
I hope this guy accepted his punishment, served it well, and can becoming a contributing member of society.

Australia got the criminals (i.e. the people who liked to have a good time and bend a few laws) while America got the religious nuts.
We definitely lost that one. At least all of our animals are not poisonous.
A majority of people don't even know about the Apple vs FBI issue and therefore have no opinion one way or the other.

I was referring to him being rescued. Him being stranded until he dies would probably not be a Hollywood script but an independent movie.

Thank you for ruining the end of the movie for me!

There are still companies that value ideas.
I've been reading this site for over a decade. Very few topics (relative to total stories) ever eclipsed 1000 comments.

It's sad, isn't it? I hate the " 'merica" movement that has taken root in the country.
